Likes
- The college provides so many opportunities for the students to develop their skills and they conduct various workshops frequently, and gives a platform for research and development
- The infrastructure is amazing, the campus is so beautifully built that is naturally creates a very inviting environment for learning
- The college conducts so many cultural events every week and motivates the students to bring out their talents, and even trains the students in organizing an event and management
Dislikes
- No matter how big the campus is, there are always so many people that it almost feels crowded. Every year so many students are given admissions , at one point they had to make changes in the timings of classes for the students.
- Most of the faculties are experienced and hold a high degree, but in some cases, the research scholars are told to conduct classes which is a lot more ineffective compared to the classes taken by the professors,
- Due to the large population, there is less personalized experiences between the students and the professors.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum definitely is very helpful in understanding the core business concepts, They have subjects like Financial Management, Accounting, Taxation, Business Laws etc, The curriculum alsoincludes practical sessions like conducting workshops, conferences, events related to the subject and helps the students gain a mor practical overview of the stuff that we're learning, This helps us prepare for the real world applications and there are certain programs that help the student is training for campus placements. The frquency and timings of the exams conducted is very optimal
Internships Opportunities
The students are required to search for internships on their own in their first year and the placement department will only approve the company and give us a bonafide, the students are then expected to create a report of the internshipwhich must include details like the time of internship, what insights we have gained from it, what challenges we have faced and other such items.
Placement Experience
So, in your 4th semester, students are asked if they are interested in getting placements, and those interested students are given placement training in their 5th semester and after finishing their final project in the 6th semester, they attend the campus interview. At SRM, for Bcom, mostly banks visit and recruit, so students who are interested in working at banks have a higher chance of getting selected, few corporate firms visit as well. Right after Bcom, the salary provided might be very less varying from 3L-4L per year, Pursuing professional courses like CA,CFA,CPA,FRM, MBA helps in building a better profile for the student and creates a higher chance of getting in big corporate firms, currently I'm pursuing CA and Bcom, after this, my plans are to complete any of the other professional courses mentioned above and also to do my post graduate degree, this way I will be exposed to the better part of the finance in corporate world.
Fees and Financial Aid
I got admission at SRM during the academic year 2023-24, The fees for Bcom (commerce) then was 85,000 rupees per year, now, they have increased it to rupees 1,20,000 per year. It is quite affordable compared to other renowned universities in Chennai. The fees includes all other extra charges. 100% scholarships are provided for students who are eligible for the same.Professional Bcom courses like, Bcom (Accounting and Finance), Bcom( Professional Accounting) charge a fee of 1,50,000.
Campus Life
SRM is known for it's cultural events, almost every week, fests and events are conducted by the students of our college, So many big events like Jhalak, MILAN, and inter departmental events like COMFEST, TESORO are being conducted every year. The MILAN is known to be the biggest fest of SRM usually conducted on the first week of March every year. The Library is massive, students have access to all kinds of book present there, the central library of SRM is like the greates asset of the university. The facilities provided by the colleg is top-notch and the equipments are always updated to the new technology arising out there. Sports and extra curricular activities are given so much importance and students are always encouraged to participate in these activities so as to improve their overall skills, not only in academics but also through extra curricular talents that they posses. The club, social groups are run by the students of the college, this helps students socialise and helps them improve their teamwork, event organizing skills, management skills, leardership, communication and what not!
Admission
So, I applied to the old, known colleges like MCC, Stella Maris, WCC, MOP, I got into MCC and MOP Vaishnav but I still chose to go to SRM because after I researched properly, the placement opportunities were wider in SRM and the infrastructure is way better and modernised here. I got rejected in Stella Maris and WCC because of my religion, Christians were given preference there, My friend got 76 percentage and I got 88, She got in and I didnt, she's a christian. so, It just didn't feel right for me, like it was not my place. In my college, the admission process for bcom is pretty easy as you just have to apply through the website and they take into consideration the marks that you've scored in your 10th and 12th grade. For courses under Faculty of Science and Humanities, no entrance exam is conducted.
Faculty
For a department with around 2500 students, there are 20 faculties, which is, in my the perfect ratio of faculty-to-student. The faculties are very approachable and kind, they are always ready to help us out, Personally, Dr. K. Sivaperumal, Department of Commerce has helped me out in my academics, and has motivated me to do better. Per semester, a total of four examinations are conducted, 2 CT's (Cycle test for 50 marks), 1 Modal Examination, 1 Semester Examination. Cycle tests are quite easy while modal and semester examinationsgo from moderate - difficult
Night Life
There are so many places to hangout with friends inside the campus itself, so many food courts and cafeterias, wide range of food options, and the library is accessible only to the people of srm with an ID card. Hostel timings are 6:30 am to 7 pm for girls, there is a timetable for food provided in the hostel and it will be followed every week. Roaming around the campus at night is considered to be safe as few events go on till like 10pm. Some famous places to hangout at SRM: Slice of Life cafe, Chettinad restaurant, Chai Kings, Subway, Emo Pizza, etc.
