What Students Say
Likes
- I appreciate the teaching methods in this college. Lab work and field work (for our course) was completely practicals. We are given hands on training in that aspects.
- The faculty members are extremely skilled and highly approachable. They are ready to help at all times.
- The infrastructure itself is very pleasing to the eyes. The college provides a serene environment.
Dislikes
- The course rigor is good, but i feel like more days could be added to the semester itself. They follow Madras University Syllabus and each semester is for 90 working days only.
Course Curriculum Overview
Plant Biotechnology aspect influenced me to choose this course. And it didn't disappoint. The curriculum itself is structured in a way thag we have hands on training on lab and real world applications. For example, we could perform Tissue culturing by ourselves. The frequency of the exams are good as there is atleast a month time between them. It helps us revise what we have learnt and learn new things too. The exams are pretty easy.
Fees and Financial Aid
Every semester the fees varies. I have paid 14000 one semester and 26000 another semester. But it usually stays in the range of 19000 to 20000. Admission fees was the fees for the first semester and all the other fees are included. The semester fees depends on the course not on the category. Financial aid is provided for students from low income families. It depends on Merit also.
Campus Life
We have several events like Alumnae Food Fair , Mt. Holyoke Fest ( Interdepartment culturals) ,Sports Day and Festeve (Intercollegiate culturals). The months varies. WCC Library is one of the well sourced libraries in Chennai. It is a goldmine of information and is constantly updated. There are projectors, Computers and Lab facilities (for science students). WCC takes sports seriously. There are several college teams like Basketball, Football, Cricket etc. Other extracurriculars like chess is also offered. There are several student run clubs in WCC like Art Club, Drama Club, Western Dance club etc. Extracurriculars are highly encouraged and it has a positive impact on the students.
Admission
I applied to Madras Christian College and Mount Carmel, Bangalore. And I got admission in both of them. But WCC had already opened by the time and I really liked the atmosphere of the college and its faculties. So I chose to stay. The admission process for WCC is completely online. The admission is purely merit based. There are no cutoffs but higher marks are preferred. (12 Standars marks) . There are no exams for UG admission. The admission process is mentioned in the website and is pretty easy to follow. The follow up email is given almost the very next day.
Faculty
Including all three years there are around 140 students in the botany department and we have 7 staffs. That is 1:20 ratio and i feel like it is a good ratio. The staff give us individual attention and help the struggling students. They are very approachable. Me personally, I don't have any favorite faculty members because they are all good to me. Each of them have their own strengths and leave that impact to the students. I feel inspired by our teachers. The exam is conducted thrice in a semester. Internal 1, Internal 2 and End Semester. All three marks are calculated together. The exams are pretty easy. For students who fail remedial classes are given and helped to clear their arrears. The course curriculum itself is constantly updated helping it stay relevant
Night Life
The college works in two shifts. But the opening time is 8 am and closing time is 5:30 pm. There is a gym in which students can workout for free. Famous hangout places in WCC will be Lily pond,Main Canteen, Common Room and CB Foyer. The locality itself is quite safe and there are many restaurants like Sangeetha, Crescent in the vicinity.
