Course Curriculum Overview

3

Curriculum is generally application based here and so are the questions asked in the exams. Which is a good thing as it means they do not burden us with unnecessary theory. The lab curriculum although can be better. But since i am only in first year it is difficult to comment more. As of now, the lab curriculum seems irrelevant to me. The projects in our curriculum prepare us good for real life applications. We have guest lecturers from universities across the world who give us more real life insights and inspire us for further studies as well. Teaching can be made better if teachers are more interactive and give personal attention. If more real life situations are discussed in class instead of mostly solving problems. Course curriculum by far is alright. Comparing to other colleges it is pretty relevant. Almost every month here we have an exam which is not a very good thing for engineers especially. We need to focus on building skills by ourselves which is made difficult by the frequent exams. Although they are not very difficult, they still demand hours on the table.

Internships Opportunities

2

The college doesn't really offer internships on its own. Sometimes it will send a mail or two where you fill up forms but that's it. Other than that you mostly have to look for internships yourself through alumni or websites or apps like linkedin. But it is not difficult to get it. Every senior i know in fourth year has done some internship. As vit gives a good tag, it is not difficult to crack internships from here. Many students also crack PPO from good companies. If you have done enough good projects, you will be given ample opportunities be it from college or from outside sources. As i am in first year that is all i know.

Placement Experience

3

Placement record of vit chennai is good enough. Students become eligible for campus placement about 5th semester onwards, they start getting PPOs. From 7th semester they get job offers from companies. From mass recruitment companies like wipro, tcs, Infosys,to small startups, to big companies like Amazon, microsoft, to PSUs like pgcil, ongc, all kinds of companies visit here. The number of mass recruitment is very high though. If you are lucky and talented enough you will crack 8lpa+ job. Highest package typically goes around 40-50 lpa and lowest is around 2-3lpa. Average is 8.5 lpa approx. Many students do not sit for placements. They go for exams or higher studies or change their fields. If you want to be placed try keeping 8+ cgpa. Among students who sit for placement, i would say around 90% are placed. Everybody cracks almost some job or the other. My plans after getting degree is to sit for college placements and work and hope for the best.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees for Btech is ?1,76,000 per year for btech in EEE, Chemical, civil, fashion technology and 1,96,000 for Cse, cse specialisations, ece, mechanical(category 1) and hostel fees ranges from approx 1 to 3 lakhs per year (including mess) depending on the type of accommodation and mess. Personally, I had to pay 1,76,000 rs for tution. 94,000 rs for 3 bed non ac room, 78,800 rs for veg mess. This was for first year. Hostel and mess fees is increasing every year approx 16%. Tution fees has also increased over time but not as much. Other fees: Registration fee:6000 rs (non refundable) Caution fee:15,000 rs(refundable) Admission fee:15,000 rs(non refundable) There are 5 categories and for each category add approx 1 lakh to the tution fees. Category 1 is for the higher rankers and category 5 is for the lowest rank students who want the same branch, hence the fees is highest for them. Hostel and mess fees remain same for all categories. Category 2 tution fees for my branch, EEE would be around 2,60,000 rs or more. There is no management quota. There are scholarships for top rankers in VITEEE: 75% tution fee waiver for 1-50 rank holders, 50% tution fee waiver for 51-100 rank holders and 25% tution fee waiver to 101-1000 rank holders. 100% tution fee waiver for central and state board toppers. These scholarships will be there in first year and continue second year onwards only if you have 8+ cgpa, fulfilled attendance criteria and not participated in any indisciplinary activity. No caste based or need based reservation or scholarships. You can avail outside scholarships under government schemes or big companies.

Campus Life

3

We have technovit around August, which is a technical fest in vit. Then they celebrate all kinds kf festival, from garba to lohri to vasant panchami, onam, pongal, you name it and they do it. It may not be as grand but it is fun. We have THE college fest called Vibrance in February -march, where they invite celebrities and singers to perform. They are not free though, you have to buy really expensive tickets. During and before these fests, all clubs organise events like hackathons and workshops. They are very fun The library has almost all kinds of book you need and they are as accessible as they can be. I have had no issue finding and borrowing books from the library. Classrooms are fine. Could be better with AC given the fees they take. Only labs have AC. They have projectors too so teachers have liberty to teach in any way they are comfortable. Though lifts can get extremely crowded. We have facility for almost every sport. Cricket, football ,lawn tennis , table tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, all courts are in campus. You can access them easily. Swimming pool is also available but you have to pay for it. Both paid and free gyms are available in campus. There are 100+ clubs in every single field you can think of. Technical clubs like Android club, codechef, hackclub, culture clubs like wakhra punjab, mharo rajasthan, magadh mithila and clubs like trekking and seds antariksh, anime, all are there. We also have NSS which does its work from time to time.

Hostel Facilities

3

Rooms are just fine. Some rooms are good, but some like 6 bedded or 3 bedded ones are very congested. You have option of ac or non ac. For our menu, we have large variety of items daily and it is different. For example, on monday veg breakfast we have aloo paratha with curd, dosa sambhar chutney, bread jam, milk and tea. For lunch we have plain rice, chapatti, pulao, some sabji, paneer, dal, curd, lemon juice. For dinner we have plain rice, chapatti, pulao, some curry, dal, buttermilk, fruit salad, milk. We also have snacks daily which consist of samosas, dahi vada, vada pav, Sandwich, pasta, chowmin, papdi chat and more. Although the menu is huge, sometimes the quality of food can lack. But all in all it is good enough. Non veg menu has egg everyday as breakfast and chicken 3 times a week. You register for hostel during admission only. And you have to be fast in picking your hostel bed type because it gets full in literally seconds. So do it as soon as the window opens. As for price, it is pretty high compared to many colleges. Hostel and mess fees also keeps increasing about 16% each year.

Admission

I chose VIT chennai compared to other private colleges because it lands much higher on the hierarchy of engineering colleges in india than the others like SRM, KIIT, Manipal, LPU etc. The structure and strictness implemented in this college makes it a much better educational institute. A lot of people complain that VIT is jail, its strict and everything but thats what makes VIT different from those colleges in terms of student quality, discipline, academics and placement. Student quality here is much better than those colleges. I have met people with 95%+ in jee mains and advanced, people who made it to iits and nits but did not get computer science so opted for the same here, and people who almost got into colleges like BITS. The restrictions here albeit annoying force us to be disciplined hence the study culture here is better than most. Vit also gives a good brand name compared to those colleges, so getting jobs outside of college placement is easier. I personally could not make it to other colleges as my jee percentile wasn't enough and i did not apply for other exams like state exams or comedk or manipal. It was only jee mains and viteee. Admission process is simple. You give VITEEE exam, then your rank is emailed to you few days later. Then you register and sit for the online councelling where you have to choose branch and category based on availability which is based on your rank and create a priority list. Once the priority list is created, they will assign you your branch considering everything. Then you have to pay some amount in advance to book your seat and choose your hostel type and mess. This amount is somewhat refundable if you opt out of college in a limited time period, like maybe 15 days. You have to score 60% minimum in pcm in boards to take admission here, no exceptions, and you have to be at least 17. For chennai campus, under 30,000 rank is good enough for a first category admission in a circuital branch as per my experience.

Faculty

3

In a class of 60-70 students we have one teacher. The teachers are very well qualified and very serious about their work so the teaching is generally good. For North Indians there might be some language issues but they speak in english so its fine. I wish i could take names but i dont think it is allowed. Most teachers are approachable, although i have encountered some teachers who prefer not to be disturbed. But all in all they're pretty chill. Nobody will scold you for asking relevant doubts, you can go to almost all of them for anything. We also have proctors assigned to each student who are basically considered as the parent while you're in here. Lucky people get easy to deal with proctors, but if you're unlucky you may get someone who'll be a headache for the next 4-5 yrs. I have friends who struggle getting leave permission from proctor even with proper parents approval. Every semester we typically have 3 exams: Cat1, Cat2(open book exam) and Fat. Cats are 50 marks written exams each holding total 30% weightage in final gpa. Fats are 100 marks written exam holding 40% weightage. Other 30% weightage comes from assignments and projects. Then we have lab exams which happen right before Fat. For programming languages like c, python, java, oops, etc, we have Pats (periodic assessment tests) about twice a month which are coding tests in labs. The course curriculum is relevant enough comparing to many engineering colleges. They review their syllabus frequently. It is not very difficult to pass tests here. That can be a good or a bad thing depending on your perspective. Students who completely debar from studies fail. Else, with average effort you can pass here. Exams are relatively easier compared to other colleges.

Night Life

2

We have both paid and unpaid gyms available. Paid gyms are obviously, better in terms of quality and crowd. We have 5 eateries: gazebo, north square, Domino's, milky way, gymkhana. Except milky way, all are priced reasonably and food is good enough. As for nightlife, we don't have any. In time for girls is 8pm and for boys is 9pm and nobody is allowed outside except for health reasons. Inside hostel we can play badminton or table tennis. But thats pretty much it. You cannot go outside campus without permission from proctor. Either take outing which is permitted for 6 hrs or take a minimum 24 hr leave. Vit chennai is located far from the city so there is nothing nearby. You have to travel far for the malls and beaches you have in chennai so travelling takes up most of the time.
