Dislikes
- There should be a bigger gym facility or gyms in girls hostel.
- The gender ratio is 7:1 .The girls are less in number like other IITs but it is not much problem as the teaching facility is very supportive.
- There are a lot of dogs in the campus who sometimes make the place dirty too.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose the B.Tech. in Mining engineering course because IIT(ISM) is well known for mining since ages. This year it will complete 100 years. The course is relevant with respect to mining in India and abroad. The curriculum is well defined and the first year subjects were nice too. There are impressive mining labs that spark interest in the subject. The course has quizzes , midsem and endsem. Relative grading is there and professors decide the grades. The projects are relevant and budgets are released by the mining department. The projects are for the first year students. Exam difficulty level is moderate. Professors are well experienced and some of them are alumni of this college too. The schedule and timing of the exams are released a bit early. The teaching methods are good. We have lectures and tutorials. The professors are very approachable and have great experience.
Placement Experience
We become eligible for campus placements after 7th semester that ends in December. The fourth year students go for placements while the second and third year students take part for internships and PPOs. There were many huge companies that came in this campus placement season. Some of them were - Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, Amazon, Accenture, Squarepoint capital, Exonnmobile, Texas instruments, ONGC, PhonePe, Intel , Sprinkle, Bajaj auto, etc. The highest offer made was by Squarepoint capital worth 66 LPA. The highest no. Of offers were from Microsoft, 16 in number. The average package CTC was 25.48 LPA. Many students also got places through PPOs and offcampus offers too. I am pursuing B.Tech. in mining engineering so my future plan after getting the degree is to go for PSUs.
Fees and Financial Aid
I paid approximately 230000 rs for 1 year here( as a 1st year btech student). The hostel and mess fees are 18000 per semester. There are various scholarships for students with low family income and some merit based scholarships too. For SC ,ST categories there is no course fees and they just need to pay the hostel and mess fees. Also for EWS categories there are various fee waivers for students whose annual family income is less than 1 lakh and 5 lakh per annum. Overall the fees are affordable and in accordance to other IITs.
Campus Life
There are 4 fests held annually in IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The first one is Concetto. It is held in August. It is a techno-management fest and has a huge budget. There are food stalls, tech exhibitions, dance competition, prom nights, comedy nights where Kullu and Vivek samtani came this year. There well huge prize money kept and a no. Of competitions. There were robowars, quizzes, coding wars, etc. We also had DJ night and EDM nights. There were many guest speakers from prestigious and renowned institutions who gave their insights too. The next fest is the largest techno mining fest of India called Khannan. It was held in october. It was organised by the mining department of the college . Since mining is my branch I took part in numerous events in this fest and enjoyed a lot. There were again prize money quizzes, games, comedy nights, EDM nights, dj night, guest lectures and a beautiful bollywood music night. We also have a filmfest organised by our official videography club of college where everyone is asked to dress like their favourite iconic bollywood characters. It was held in September. We have Srijan , a huge cultural fest organised in February first week. It had dance competition, singing competition, photography, treasure hunt, cooking competition, fying kite contest, rangoli contest, edm nights , dj nights and the impressive Star night where Salim- Suleimani came this year. We also have a sports fest called parakram in March month. There are a huge number of books present in the central library of our college. Almost all books related to tech are present. The classrooms are also well equipped with smart boards and digital projectors and cctvs. There are innumerable activities offered throughout the session by various clubs of our college. There are a lot of clubs , social groups and portals made by students. They are supervised by the Students Gymkhana of our college. We have many NGOs run too which hold blood donation camps. We also have NCC , NSS and yoga.
Hostel Facilities
The campus of IIT ISM Dhanbad is completely residential. I stay in the new Rosaline girls hostel. I was allocated the room just after admission. The room is big and spacious and triple seater. There are a lot of dogs in the campus but the cleanliness staff remains very active. The hostel and mess fees are very affordable. It is Rs 36000 per year. The mess food is healthy and many options are available. The taste is not so good though except a few times when we have special dinners .
Admission
I applied to this college through JoSAA process. I gave my 12th board examinations and qualified JEE mains (98.4 percentile) and JEE advanced. I got admission through JEE advanced rank. In JoSAA counselling , I filled various other IITs and NITs. In my rank ( 19181 in jee advanced general category), the best possible option I saw was this college. The fees were also reasonable. The college is closer to my home and has a glorious history in mining for 100 years. I chose this college over others because it is a very prestigious IIT. It is close to my home too. Also I liked the branch I got here. The admission process of IIT(ISM) Dhanbad in B Tech is through JEE advanced examination after which you need to fill JoSAA counselling. For M.Tech you need to qualify GATE examination. The overall admission experience was good. Earlier I was anxious as the whole system seemed a little overwhelming but the process was smooth. The fees are also affordable and in accordance to other IITs. After admission there was a document verification procedure too which again went smoothly.
Faculty
The faculty is very good. All the professors are with great qualifications and are in general extremely supportive too. They teach well and the exams conducted are smooth. The lecture plans are correctly followed also. Apart from lectures , there are tutorial classes too for some subjects. The professors and the teaching assistants help the students. The assignments and quizzes are conducted according to previously told schedule. There is relative grading this year for 1st year B.Tech. but for other courses it can vary. Some professors are very approachable too. 75% attendance is compulsory for sitting in the examinations. There are quizzes , mid sems and end sem examinations. The grading depends on the professors of the respective courses.
Interview Experience
I gave the JEE mains (98.4%ile ) and qualified the JEE advanced examination to get the admission in B.Tech. in mining engineering at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. Apart from clearing thses exams we also need to have above 75% in our 12th Boards for admission through JoSAA counselling. I prepared in class 11-12 for these exams.
Night Life
The library is open till midnight 12. Near the library we also have Dominoes, Restaurants , Nescafe, Amul units ,etc. There are a lot of parks to sit in the evenings. The campus entry timings are till 10 pm whereas the hostel entry timing is 1 am in night. The campus has streetlights and a lot of guards so it is safe to hangout at night.
