Course Curriculum Overview

3

The course docter of pharmacy provides insights into the use of modern medicine and therapeutics. After completing pharmd you can work as a clinical pharmacist and help docters design thier treatment regimon that provides maximum benefits to patients and is cost effective. This influenced my decision to choose this course. But for real world applications the preparation provided but the curriculum is not upto the marks. Yet the college manages to provide as clinical postings in hospital which helps to improve patient student interactions and real world conditions. I find the course still needs improvement in improving the application level skills of the students. Since the academic schedule is planned yearly the frequency and timing of exams is not too hectic. Yet there is a lot of topics to be covered in a short time. The timing in between two exams is short.

Fees and Financial Aid

The year wise fees is 1 lakh ninty thousand. Additional fees is paid for registration for university exams every year which is around 1000 per subject. An amount of 1 lakh was paid at the beginning of the course which includes all miscellaneous charges for the entire duration of the course. The tuition fees for students getting admission via NRI quota is around 3 lakhs. Students can avail NSP merit cum means scholarship ehich sums up around 30 thousand every year. This is to br renewed periodically

Campus Life

4

Although the college management gives preference to academics still arts and cultural fests and athletics meet are conducted annually. The selected students also participate in inter college competitions. The college has a well built library with sufficient journals and books. Every classrooms are equipped with projectors and individual chairs for students. There is also two computer lab with good internet facility. Student's club activities are limited since the students get little time for that apart from studies

Hostel Facilities

3

The hostel facility is average. We have rooms shared by four people. The rooms are provided with lights, fan and switchboards. Each student gets a bed, table, chair and shelf. The meal quality is ok but at times it's poor. There is non veg almost everyday except fridays. The room rent is 1000 and mess fee 4500 which is affordable. Registration process is very simple

Admission

I applied to amrita school of pharmacy and nirmala college of pharmacy and got admissions at both but i chose to join my present college since they had their own medical college and fees was relatively affordable compared to amrita. Since the course necessitates the requirement of hospital training for students choosing a college with own medical college is beneficial. The college is under kerala university of health science and you can apply through ksspcma website. Allotment is according to merit. No entrance exams are required

Faculty

3

The faculty students relationship is average though not all faculties are easily approachable yet there are a few who are very loving and supportive. Especially i have to mention julie ma'am, pheba ma'am,archana ma'am etc. They have a friendly nature which i like very much about them. There aren't any faculties i didn't like but some felt less approchable than others. And some faculties only very few favour students they like. There are three sessional exams and a university exam every year. There are also six subjects per year except for 5th year where you will be having 3 subjects along with clerkship and project. The exams are pretty difficult to clear . You need 50% marks seperatly in theory and practical to pass the exams. A good number of students fail to clear exams in the first attempt. And if you have arrears for more than two subjects ,you will not be promoted to the next academic year. The course curriculum still nees to be updated in regard to the modern practises in medicine and therapy. The sullabus is outdated and not upto modern day practise.

Night Life

2

There is no nightlife in the college. The curfew begins at 6.30pm. The gym facility is very poor. There are two cafeterias in the campus which are pretty much good. Outings are permitted only on Wednesdays, fridays and sundays for girls and alternative days for boys. There is a gate pass required for entrance and exit to the college. The famous hangout spots are cafes. The locality is actually safe to roam around

The practical sessions of the courses are the most effective way to implement and integrate the theoretical knowledge accumulated in the classes. The hospital trainings and ward rounds are the best tools to cultivate and condition the personnel to be ready for the medical world.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The college is known for its hospital. Its situated in a good area of town. This course is a developing course hence was new to me. The curriculum system is mainly based on improving theoretical knowledge and gives less importance in practical knowledge gain. But the course is practically useful in hospitals as it is a very important in patient counselling. Doctors diagnose the patient whereas it is the clinical pharmacist who shoild prescribr and give patient counselling about the medicine to the patient or by-stander. Hence academically the curriculum supports students by providing hospital trainings during 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th year and internship. Improvement can be done in the examination system by not making student study just for the exams and implement practical gain of knowledge. Teaching methods can be for student freindly and interactive instead of just showing slideshows which are done most of the time. Exams are conducted according to an academic calender hiven ecmvery year for that particilar year. Usually 3 sessionals are written in every 2 to 3 months. Questions for the exam are of all kinds ranging from simple to application level.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Soevific asoects of the curriculum that influenced me to decide doing Pharmd program is, in our country there is lot of prescribing errors and dispensing errors making patient life more danger. In my point of view. PharmD is an bridge between Prescriber and patient. The pharmd curriculum established by india(PCI) is not good. Because it is almost same as Bpharm curriculum. The areas for improving the course curriculum and teaching methods are to include subjects like general medicine, General Prescribing guidelines to make the pharmd as prescribing doctors and to enhance the deep into the medicine.
