Course Curriculum Overview

3

The college is known for its hospital. Its situated in a good area of town. This course is a developing course hence was new to me. The curriculum system is mainly based on improving theoretical knowledge and gives less importance in practical knowledge gain. But the course is practically useful in hospitals as it is a very important in patient counselling. Doctors diagnose the patient whereas it is the clinical pharmacist who shoild prescribr and give patient counselling about the medicine to the patient or by-stander. Hence academically the curriculum supports students by providing hospital trainings during 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th year and internship. Improvement can be done in the examination system by not making student study just for the exams and implement practical gain of knowledge. Teaching methods can be for student freindly and interactive instead of just showing slideshows which are done most of the time. Exams are conducted according to an academic calender hiven ecmvery year for that particilar year. Usually 3 sessionals are written in every 2 to 3 months. Questions for the exam are of all kinds ranging from simple to application level.

Internships Opportunities

3

The internship of the course is done in the hospital of the college which is sutuated elsewhere (about 5-10km from the college premise). During internship students go for ward rounds and write down cases and also do case presentations. The final year of the course is internship but tuition fees of ?1,90,000 (or ?3,00,00 for NRI) still has to be paid for it. A stipend of ?5000 is paid monthly to the students. Projects are compleyed in 5th year and not during internship. Externship can also be done but must be prior notified and requested in the college for permission.

Fees and Financial Aid

A total of 6 years are there and each year Rs.1,90,000 is to be paid as tuition fees. Fees are paid even during internship which is the 6th year. As breakage fees every year an amount between 20 to 1000 is taken from each student. Sometimes this can be higher rate than Rs.1000. Hostel rent is Rs.1000 pet month and mess fees of Rs.4500 per month. A total of Rs.1,30,000 was paid extra other than tuition fees in the first year before starting of the classes as maintenance fees for books, uniform, transportation, etc. For NRI quota the tuition fee is Rs.3,00,000. Students can avail a scholarship of the Nsp which sums up to an amount of 25,000(day scholars) and 30,000(hostelers).

Campus Life

3

Overall there are different events held in the college like arts fest, sports, onam celebration, christmas celebrations, pharmacy week celebrations, etc. These are all conducted by the initiative of the college hnion whose members change every year through polling and voting. Other small events like teachers day, choldrens day, environmental day, etc are also celebrated in small ways. The college has its own library and contains only textbook and reference books. The reference books can only be used in library and cant be taken out. There are no novels or story books or comic books in the librarg and only study materials are there. Classroom facilites are provied for everg batch separately and classes are big enough to hold 30 students each. Sports day is conducted in the campusitself. Students are also taken for competitions outside college and participation has been done. Student clubs like dance, song are all present but not very active. Students mainly are focused kn academics rather than extra curricular activities.

Hostel Facilities

3

4 students share a single room. Each student gets their own bed, a shelf, a table and a chair. The rooms are not very big. Meals are not much satisfying. But they do give tasty meals at times. Every sunday hostel provides chicken biriyani as lunch which is a good meal. Breakfast on all days include one of the following: idli, dosa, idi appam, pal appam, uppma, bread and curry. Lunch is always rice and curries. Dinner is usually fried rice, chapati, idi appam, pal appam or rice. The hostel facility is within the campus itself. The food may not be the best and there have been incidence of getting cockroaches, mosquito, catterpillar, etc. Once in everg 2 or 3 months they give a BBQ chicken which is really good.

Admission

I applied to many colleges like Manipal university where i got admission for occupational therapy, SRM university where i got admission for occupational therapy, father mullers college for BASLP, etc. But i took admission here as this is a well reputed college in Kerala and the course was new and has scope abroad. I came here as it is closer to my home. Easier means to go home anytime. The college seemed nice. As for the other colleges they were mostly out of the state hence due to personal reasons i didnt go there. The admission process was through online site of the college and meeting with the principal and director. The 12th standard score was mainly taken as eligibilty. There are different quotas like NRI, Minority, Spot admission, etc. For NRI quota the fees structure is a bit high that is 3,00,000rs per year compared tk the normal fees of 1,90,000rs. Students can also give their KEAM score along with 12th score

Faculty

4

The faculty to student ratio is approx 1:10 which allows reasonable personalised attention to students. With around 30 to 40 faculty and 300 to 350 students there is good probablity for students to interact with teachers. Faculties are usually friendly and approachable in academic and professional matters. However there are instances where the relationship is less seemless often influenced by individuals. Many faculties have transfered to ither colleges or left the college and nee faculties are being taken too. For Pharm.D there are 3 theory sessional exams and 2 practical exams in each year and a university exam which is the final exam thus comprise of 4 examinations. For 1st year there are 6 subjects (5 university and 1 non-university) and 5 practicals too. The 2nd year to 4th year there are 6 subjects and practical subjects are 3,5,4 for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year respectively. The 5th year has only 3 subject but has 2 practical subjects called clerkship and project. Project is basically a research that is done in the college based on different articles. All the exams are really very hard to clear and if failed in a subject the Suplementory exam have to be written. Only if a student clears all subject of 1st year alcan they sit in 3rd year similarly only if a student clears all subject of 2nd year will theh be able to sit in 4th year classes. Only iff all the 4 year subjects are vleared will the students be able to sit in 5th year class. Only if all 5 year subjects are cleared can a student start their internship.

Night Life

3

The college closes at 3.30pm and teachers go home at 3.45pm. After this time no students are allowed to be in the campus. Library closes at 4pm. There is no much nightlife activities. Gym is not present in the college. College has a ground where football and cricket are played on most days after college hours. Theres a volleyball court, badminton court and throwball court all of which are used by the students. Only limitayion is it can be used only upto 6:30pm after which students are not allowed to use it. Hostel timings are there. For girls outing days are on wednesdays and fridays. For boys outing days are tuesdays and thurdays. Sunday is a common outing day for both boys and girls. Famous hangout places includes restaurant and cafe near the college like burger lounge, coffee central. There are canteen in the campus too where students can hang out. The students can also hangout in the campus as the place is equiped with benches here and there. Hostelers can take walk after college.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course docter of pharmacy provides insights into the use of modern medicine and therapeutics. After completing pharmd you can work as a clinical pharmacist and help docters design thier treatment regimon that provides maximum benefits to patients and is cost effective. This influenced my decision to choose this course. But for real world applications the preparation provided but the curriculum is not upto the marks. Yet the college manages to provide as clinical postings in hospital which helps to improve patient student interactions and real world conditions. I find the course still needs improvement in improving the application level skills of the students. Since the academic schedule is planned yearly the frequency and timing of exams is not too hectic. Yet there is a lot of topics to be covered in a short time. The timing in between two exams is short.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Soevific asoects of the curriculum that influenced me to decide doing Pharmd program is, in our country there is lot of prescribing errors and dispensing errors making patient life more danger. In my point of view. PharmD is an bridge between Prescriber and patient. The pharmd curriculum established by india(PCI) is not good. Because it is almost same as Bpharm curriculum. The areas for improving the course curriculum and teaching methods are to include subjects like general medicine, General Prescribing guidelines to make the pharmd as prescribing doctors and to enhance the deep into the medicine.
