What Students Say
Likes
- Girls to boys ratio was roughly 2:5. The thing I liked the most was the transperancy between students and teachers. All the teachers actively interacted with the students and everyone of them were accessible whenever we needed them.
- Another thing is that the field work, especially for survey was done thoroughly. The institution hired special officials to make us understand about the usage of total station.
- The pressure of study was less and with all the interaction with teachers made the college life easier.
Dislikes
- The quality of study was not upto the mark. The teachers were capable of teaching but it depended on their mood when they teach.
- The supervising of examination were not appropriately done. Students could easily cheat or bring mobile phones.
- There was favouritism towards certain students that made them excel in marks.
Course Curriculum Overview
Civil was my family background and I was really interested in legos, and building. So I got attached to civil Engineering in my really early age of life. I think for civil Engineering specifically no diploma course or BTech course or masters course can make you industry ready. You have to gain certain out of the books skills to become one. But in case of knowledge, the course gave us a good basic knowledge. I'd suggest more interactive classes, not just by teaching by books but to present real world problems and how engineers solve them would motivate the students more about civil Engineering world. The exam schedule were disbalanced because of Covid. We had out 1dt year for 18 months and then the next semesters were done within 3-4 months.
Placement Experience
The students were eligible for placement after 5th semester exam. Many companies including LnT energy, LnT construction, Ambuja cement, Ultratech, Wood PLC and many companies visited the campus for fresh recruits. The offers were made between 3-4 lakhs per annum. Highest package was 4.25 lakh offered by LnT construction. Almost 80% of our batch got placed in companies. The one that couldn't get placed were the ones not meeting the age requirement. I opted for BTech in Civil Engineering after completing the course in JCGP.
Fees and Financial Aid
The year wise fee was so less as it is an government institute, it was 800 rs per semester, with additional 250 rs for some activities like saraswati puja, biswakarma puja. The registration fee was also 250 rs. But there was no additional lab fees or development fees. Admission fee was same as registration fee. The other categories provided (eg. Diploma in mechanical, electrical, electronics) had the similar fee structure as of my discipline (diploma in civil engineering). The institution did not opt for any internship opportunities. There was swami vivekanand scholarship that students could opt for, and getting 18 thousand rupees.
Campus Life
Our college held only one annual fest but there also the management was in hands on us students. The college provides a limited amount of capital, and the rest were collected from each year group of students to have an actual good fest by hiring a local band. The fest usually took place in February. Our college also held one annual sports day, occuring in each December. Consisting of many sports like different types of sprinting, shit out, disc throw etc. There was no technical event sadly. And there was also no club for extracurricular activities too sadly. There was student run activities like ganesha puja, biswakarma puja but they were severely limited. Overall the campus didn't provide much of extracurricular activities.
Admission
My first preference was jcgp, as it was the college my relatives' sob is passed from. I heard the good things as it was the best diploma college for civil Engineering in west bengal. After my admission I didn't think so but it occurred to me after a while. The admission process was pretty simple. We had to appear for joint entrance exam and based on the marks we had to choose the college. But in dire situation of Covid, we got the chance to apply for the college just by showing our higher secondary result. As far as I know any student getting over 55% in higher secondary examination got accepted in diploma in civil engineering. Students can also appear for exams like VOCLET and join the course from 2nd year.
Faculty
The faulty to student ratio was roughly 1:7 for each department. The faculty student relationship was really good as all the faculty were super approachable. I really like Seema ma'am as a faculty. Because she'd teach the subjects like storytelling, and my relationship with the ma'am was also good as she helped me understand different topics in her free time. I didn't like Saibal sir, the HoD of civil department, for being in an important administration seat, and doing nothing but following orders. We couldn't get any help by consulting any matter to him. Exams were fairly easy, but not all the things were taught in the class. In 4th semester 40% of students had backlog in one particular subject because it was not taught to us clearly. The course curriculum was on to the point. That was a huge plus point.
Night Life
There was no gym or cafeteria. The library was there but after my 1st year, the librarian retired and the library remained closed till our time of passout (3 years). Us, boys, did not have hostel facility, so we could not enjoy the nightlife. Girls hostel were there, and the timing was strictly till 7 pm. The locality was not safe to roam around as various danga occured in our time mostly occuring at night. The campus area was in the heart of Muslim colony and fights were common there. The only decent hangout place was a bounded park approximately 1.3 km away from the campus.
