What Students Say?
Likes
- The lecture halls are equipped with modern technology, high speed internet connectivity and charging sockets on each desk.
- The canteens as well as restaurants inside the campus are quite affordable for college students.
Dislikes
- Many washrooms in the hostels have still not been renovated.
- Official work is quite slow and time consuming. Also the planning of events is not efficient and many times the activities clash with each other.
Course Curriculum Overview
The first year curriculum is not very relevant. Talking about my course I don't understand the need for physics and chemistry lab when I have taken up economics. No doubt I would need to study the Maths for future courses as well as study the programming languages but I still don't know why we have to study Physics and Chemistry too. But after the first two semesters, the course is very relevant and also contains options for minors in other courses and selecting your own subjects.
Internships Opportunities
Internships are offered in second and third year - with the alumni networks and also many companies. As a freshers, I don't have much details about the internship opportunities but still students have many opportunities.
Placement Experience
Placement opportunities at IIT Bombay are very good. But getting a high paying job depends on an individual - how skilled and qualified they become after 4 years. If you lay focus on academics and build your personality with all the resources and networks you have IIT Bombay, you'll definitely land at a very good place in your life. There are also startups and business opportunities. Entrepreneurship is encouraged by the departments.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
1,00,000 Tuition Fee per semester 16,900 Hostel Fee per semester 22,500 Mess Fee per semester Apart from this, roughly 30,000 are taken under the admission fees, security deposits, gymkhana, and medical charges. There are scholarships for SC/ST students and those with a family income of less than 5 lakhs, which includes a complete waiver on tuition fees. Also, scholarships are provided on merit cum income-based criteria. Scholarships are also provided for purchasing laptops and financing hostel and mess charges.
Campus Life
Mood-Indigo and TechFest are some continent wide popular college fests organised by IIT Bombay. The campus life is very happening and there is never a dull day. There is always something or the other going on the campus in the student activity centre or the auditoriums and convocation halls. The library is very well maintained and equipped with all the infrastruce and academic resources you will need. The internet connectivity is ensured with high speed modems and ethernet ports in all hostel rooms. There are many student-run clubs and events like salsa night, garba night, and fashion night. There are tech clubs, robotics clubs and coding clubs too.
Hostel Facilities
Facilities provided in rooms - study table, wardrobe, sockets, ethernet ports. Facilities in hostel - washing machines, dryers, general store, stationary shop, canteens and restaurants nearby. Mess Food - quality is average, sometimes the meals are very delicious but mostly the food gets quite boring due to the repetitive menus. But special meals are very tasty. The food is nutritious and you sometimes get sweets, fruits, milkshakes, lassi, butter milk. Both the hostel and mess are very affordable. In fact they charge just 1/4th of the cost as compared to other private colleges and institutes.
Admission
Getting into the top 7 IITs was always my target, but I never thought of getting into IIT Bombay that too in one of the sought after branches in current times. I chose IIT Bombay mainly for the brand of it. The reputation and respect it carries in the society, the alumni networks, as well as the industry connections it offers, are worth joining IIT Bombay. Also the connectivity of Mumbai as a city to my hometown was one particular factor too. The infrastructure (apart from hostels), sports facilities and various clubs make it a marvellous place to be at. Be it NIRF rankings or the brand image of IIT Bombay, everything makes it the best institute of India.
Faculty
IIT Bombay has some very well experienced professors, who are highly qualified in their respective fields. They are assisted by teaching assistants who are commonly the M-Tech, PHD or the senior undergraduate students. These TAs take the tutorials as well as practice sessions and conduct the labs. But many times it is quite difficult to understand the accent of professors and TAs and also some students face difficulty due to language barriers and not being able to understand english. Help sessions in local languages are conducted for them but the frequency of these sessions is not much.
