What Students Say
Likes
- Very knowledgeable and excellent professors, air-conditioned classrooms and labs, good mess food and nice natural environment
- No restriction on time to go out of hostel or campus. Superb environment social, cultural and national interaction with many fun activities and country's largest college festivals.
Dislikes
- Small hostel rooms in many hostels. Even rooms in some hostels are in really bad condition, for example the paint on the walls and ceiling is getting worn off.
- Roads are sloped not straight causing us to put much more effort while cycling.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course for electrical engineering goes into basics but is all-encompassing including core electrical and mathematics, physics, chemistry, CS, labs, courses like management and philosophy, NCC, nss, and sports. I chose EE because of its practicality and its ability to combine with other courses like CS, MnC, civil, chemical, etc. to innovate. The curriculum prepares us well for further studies in college and outside and provides us with solid base knowledge for further studies. The classes are divided into 5 days, I have 2-3 classes on some days and have 6-7 on others.
Internships Opportunities
Many intership opportunities are out there at IIT BOMBAY. Top international and national companies to famous local companies offer intership to eligible students including Microsoft, Wipro, Google, etc. The roles are generally apprentice, technical head, assistant project head to simple learner. The stipend varies from 6-7k to 20-25+k per month.
Placement Experience
Students are eligible for campus placements by the third year. Companies from all over the world and countries like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, reliance, and many more offer great salaries and perks to students. The highest packages reach 3-4 crore rs pa and the average is around 7-8 lakhs. The percentage of students getting placements is as high as 60-70 %. I also plan to first get 4-5 years of industry experience.
Fees and Financial Aid
The complete fee for general students is around 150000 rs per semester. For sc/st and students with income less than 200000 rs pa it's 45-50000 rs. There are many scholarship opportunities for almost every student whether by institute or private. Free messing scholarship for sc, st provides messing and some other facilities for free worth 27000+ rs and 5000 rs pa. MCM provides 50000 per year and many others available on the institute's website.
Campus Life
IIT Bombay holds the biggest college fest Mood Indigo and the biggest technical fest namely Techfest. Esummit, also a national grand event at the college level for budding entrepreneurs, is also held annually. Sports fest, Gala dinner, DJ nights, and many more fun activities go on the whole year. Almost all famous sports that have low injury risk are available. The college has many clubs for coding, sports, machine making, thinking, and much more.
Hostel Facilities
The college is almost fully residential. All basic facilities are provided like 24×7 electricity, water supply, fan, tubelights, workbenches, lockable almirah and chairs. The room is shared between 2 students. Mess is inside hostel. The quality and variety of food is just awesome . The registration process is really simple with no headache. Just filling a form and getting keys in minutes after fee payment.
Admission
Seats for the EE BTech 4-year course start with the sc category rank around 100 in JEE Advanced to 160 something. There is a certain percentage of seats reserved for SC, ST, PWD, EWS, and females. Seats in IITs require clearing of JEE Advanced with minimum cutoff marks set by IITs. After the result of the exam, there is a counseling session held by Josaa which is fully online. The counselling fee was 20000 rs at my time and it may rise by 1-1.5 k in subsequent years. The exam of JEE Advanced is held annually and it's required to clear JEE Mains to be eligible to appear for it. It's considered the toughest exam in india along with UPSE and CSE and also one of the toughest entrance exams in the whole world so difficulty can be estimated.
Faculty
Although faculty to student ratio is quite large but it's still small compared to many other colleges. It doesn't have much impact on the learning experience as anyone can raise their doubts anytime during or even after the class by directly going to a specific professor's college room. The faculty members are well known throughout the country and some are world famous too. The faculty members are selected after a rigorous process needing not only awesome qualifications but teaching experience also. One can interact with them in class or even outside the class while on the way. The professors are really approachable and they even encourage students to approach them.
