Remarks

The overall experience was just crap. The quality of professors needs a hell lot of improvement. The infrastructure both in terms of academic and extracurriculars needs to be improved a lot. Research needs to be encouraged a lot more.

Entrance Preview

The admission process is Joint entrance exam(IIT-JEE). There is no interview process. We get it through counseling. We list all the courses in all the IITs according to our priority and we get the top most choice that has seats unfilled for our rank. I am interested in engineering in general but I ended up in electrical engineering by pure chance as I said according to my rank. But I enjoy doing it.

Course Curriculum Overview

0.5

The curriculum was outdated. We were not being introduced to the latest trends in technology. We were at least I guess 10 years or more behind in terms of what we were taught. The labs were a joke. They haven't been updated in a long time and the student to equipment ratio was not good. 7 to 8 students has to work on a single piece of equipment. There wasn't exactly a lot of research being done at least by the students. I have no idea about the professors. Even if we were interested in research, there was a lack of equipment. For my own research, all I needed were a solar panel and power electronic converter which were not available or accessible to me. So I ended up with having just simulation results. And I had to attend the conference using my own money to pay the conference fee and travel costs. The university should pay so that the students feel encouraged to pursue research.

Internships Opportunities

There were almost no internships provided by college. A few of the students secured internships by applying on their own. The rest of us had to go to companies like Vizag steel plant and pay a fee to get the mandatory summer internship/training.

Placement Experience

0.5

Placement scenario was pretty bad in spite of being an iit. In my course, only 45 students got placed out of 108 students. And that too most of us got placed in companies like TCS and IBM for a ctc of around 3.5 lakhs which we really don't expect from an IIT graduate but is the sad reality.

College Events

3.5

The cultural and technical fests were good although there was a lot of corruption involved. The student government bodies involved used to swindle a lot of the money received as funds for the fest.

Fee Structure And Facilities

It was quite affordable during my time. It was just around 18000 per semester plus mess fee. But now, I believe the fee has been increased and is about 50000 per semester as far as I know. I don't know the amount exactly.

Fees and Financial Aid

I didn't have any scholarship but the scholarship was offered to OC people only if the income was less than 1 lakh per annum where as the income limit was a lot more relaxed in case of other castes which is not fair. Money is the same for everyone no matter what the caste is. So the income cut off should be the same for all castes.

Campus Life

1.5

The facilities weren't really good compared to other IITs but we did have free time to pursue other interests.

Hostel Facilities

0.5

I was residing in the hostel. The hostel rooms were decent. We used to stay in double rooms. Not too bad. But the mess food was complete crap. Far from any standards of hygiene or cleanliness whatsoever. Sometimes not even edible. The rice wasn't properly cooked. The roti were really hard to even tear them with hands, so even more hard to chew and eat. The curry was tasteless. Most of the time we used to skip meals in the mess and order outside. In spite of all this, we had to pay 15000 every semester for food. It was mandatory even though we had to order outside most of the time due to the extremely bad quality of food.

Alumni/Alumna

There is an yearly fest organised by the college to interact with all the alumni.

Exam Structure

That was the one good thing. We didn't have as many exams and quizzes. So it wasn't as stressful. We were pretty relaxed and we had time to pursue our other interests as well.

Faculty

Apart from 3 or 4 professors, at least in my department, the rest were complete crap. They had no idea what they were doing. Sometimes, they just used to recite stuff straight from the text book instead of teaching us. I never felt that they had any interest in the students. They weren't very cooperative with the students. My head of the department refused to give a recommendation letter to my friend because apparently he had an accident which hurt his leg a few months ago. I am not even sure why or how that's even a reason. The standard of the teaching was very much below par if you ask me. In addition to all this, some of the professors were really egoistic. Right now, I am doing my masters abroad and the difference in the quality of teaching and the standard of professors between here and my bachelor's in India is like night and day.

Mechanical branch in terms of number of students placed is quite high but if it is about how many students get elite packages it's less. The average for our branch at our college is 8-9 lakhs but top companies which are into our core space for long are our college partners.

My plans after degree is to pursue masters or right away get on with my family business as we are already into trading chemicals. However, from the number of students from our stream that apply for jobs through campus, over 80% are placed from campus. Labs to industries that deals in manufacturing of chemicals and exporting the same are the ones where students of our college get the opportunity.

Highest package from our campus is eye catching as it's 56 lakhs and for chemical branch it was 34 lakhs. HUL, Sun Pharma, public limited labs and various R&D research centres are those that have helped us to get best available jobs in market as the competition is high but BIT Mesra has still managed to place over 80% students last year.

From second semester we are taken for an hour session for special training. It is optional till 4th semester but from 5th semester onwards, it becomes mandatory and we have no choice but to go through that hammer. Finally, from the last year's 1st semester companies starts coming and we can apply for the same and that is how placements are done here.

Placement Experience:

The placement opportunities is decent for students. The placement of BIT sindri varies from branch to branch but the core brances like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering has evergreen placements. Among the eligible students around 90 percent students get placed. But in branches like civil and production engineering, its not the same. They have very low placement rate around 20 to 30% of eligible students get placement. For CSE, IT & ECE the placement is highly dependent on the situation of market and it varies early. The students are eligible from 6 the semester onwards for placement . The placement drive starts from August or September and companies visit till students graduate. The top recruiters are TCS with more than 80 students from overall campus , TATA power nearly 20 , LNT, JSW , Vedanta , TATA STEEL, JSL, ADANI, ABG , Shyam steel and For it sector companies like samsung , cognisant, hitachi, TCs, Spyder visited for 2k21 batch. For the batch 2020-2024 among batch size of 710 around 620 offers were made. The highest package is given by samsung which is around 28 LPA , students of CSE, IT, ECE and Electrical are eligible. For IT sector average package is around 6 lakhs. For core sectors companies heightest package is offered by vedanta to Electrical, Mechanical, Mining which is around 14 lakhs average package is around 7 LPA.. Around 75- 80 percent students get placed during campus placement drive. The Wish to crack GATE and join PSU after my graduation.
