ISM Dhanbad - Indian Institute of Technology - [IITISM], B.Tech + M.Tech, Mining Engineering
Reviewed on Jan 14, 2017

Remarks

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is an excellent college and build a student in each and every aspect.since because it is situated in Dhanbad so exposure is less little bit as there is no airport. Professors are cool and life is enjoyable inside the campus. rest is your talent, how do you manage with the tag and utilize college resources, alumni base.

Entrance Preview

I cracked IIT JEE--2009 and scored 194. First I joined NIT,Allahabad but later on I got IIT (ISM) Dhanbad so I swtichd to it. Whole admission process was very smooth as the faculty in ISM Dhanbad are very cooperative. at the same time I also got selected in IIST, Thiruvananthapuram but I rejected this option because of some personal reason.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

As Research point of view course curriculum is outdated. I had studied the most of the material which was used in 70's in the industry but practical labs are equipped with modern softwares and equipments. They provide industrial exposure to each and every student which is itself a very fruitful to carrier. as the name of institute is very reputed in the world of mining engineering so you get good response from research magazine publisher as well as other field expert.

Internships Opportunities

Of course! there 15-20 companies which offer internship every ear. there are some big name like Tata steel, Microsoft, Samsung, Essar, Electrosteel, Shell, BG , Schlum, Sail and tata and many more. They offer 10000-50000 per month for a period of 2-3 months.

Placement Experience

5

Placement for different branches differ but overall they manage around 90% placement. around 70 companies visited for 700 students and they offered from 3LPA to 72 LPA. on an avg. it was around 8 LPA. companies like Google, Facebook offered more than 50 lakhs. Rio tinto 36 LPA, Shell, Schlum, Microsoft, Amazon around 20LPA. Tata steel, CIL, ONGC, Reliance, Essar 10LPA.while TCS,IBM,TCE,KCT,Accenture around 5LPA.

College Events

4.5

There were around 10 events including 3 major fest. all fest were organized on national level. some of the fest were as follows: 1. Prakaram- sports fest 2. Srijan- Cultural 3. Mechathlon- Tech Fest 4. Pratibimb- Interdisciplinary fest 5. Megamine- earthscieces fest 6. Prom nights

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fees in IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is very low for each and every discipline as compare to other IITs. It was around 36000/- annually. for Sc/ST it was waived off. overall a mango man can easily afford this college and can get quality education. we had to pay the fee semester wise at the beginning of each semester. fees for other causes are also very less.

Fees and Financial Aid

they got 1 SBI branch inside the campus and loans can be easily availed from the banks. also there are list of scholarship out of which merit based scholarship is very popular. it is give around 100 students on the basis of merit and financial background. the only condition to get this scholarship is not to fail in any subject.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus is quite big and also maintened clean and beautiful. a lot of tall buildings have been constructed. overall you will not get bored inside the campus as a lot of activites happen all the time inside the premise. people from all over india can be found over there. however, no. of girls are very less as compare to boys. in my time we were 650 students including 27 girls in my batch. there are around 10-12clubs from drama, music, social activities, toastmaster, robotics. some group discussions ,seminar, debates always arranged in auditorium or thetare. as ISM has 1 auditorium and 2 theaters.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

there are around 8- mega hostels for boys and 3-hostels for girls. except MTech and Phd it's allotted on sharing basis. all hostels are equipped with gym, mess, playgrounds, library and computer room. hostel rooms are quite good, liveable .they provide almirah, table and chair and bed for each and every student. quality of given items are quite good. soe hostels are excellent. avg. rental fee per annum was around 15000 INR. they also ensure hostel room to each and every student. they also maintend canteen filtered water, clean water and cleanliness of premises.

Alumni/Alumna

I have lived with seniors, they have been supportive always guided. we were just like the family inside the campus. they never harrassed to anyone. alumni base in ISM is excellent. generally all alumni visit college once in a year. they also help after college, support in carrier building and after college life too. I'm still in touch with most of the seniors.

Exam Structure

Exam strucure is awesome as they schedule it back to back for 5 days at the mid and end of each semester. while there are surprise test also time to time depends on professor. They take practical seriously and Labs for especially earth sciences are quite modern but not cutting edge. They also give assignments to students. Overall we were hectic for only 5-10 days ...and rest of the time we jst chilled out.

Admission

After getting result, I didn't get selected in first round. so being hopeless I joined NIT, Allahabad but later in 2nd round I got entry in ISM Dhanbad. It was very hectic to withdraw nomination fro NIT Allahabad and get enrolled in ISM Dhanbad as I had only 3 days to complete both process. I took risk and withdrew my nomination from NIT,Allahabad and then for 1 day I was not in any of two colleges. this decision at that age made me cranky at that time because I was handling it all single handedly. My parents and guardians, nobody was with me to support, guide or ease out the process.Any how I reached ISM Dhanbad on 8-8-2009 and get myself enrolled. everybody there helped me and finally room allotted to me in Diamond hostel and so my section for further study.

Faculty

3.5

More than 50% faculty is useless and they are just passing their time, having handsome salary and enjoying college perks. Most of the proffessors have not even published their article for a long time in their carrier. communication skills are also a drawback in faculties. New professor especially coming from qouta are worthless.

Mechanical branch in terms of number of students placed is quite high but if it is about how many students get elite packages it's less. The average for our branch at our college is 8-9 lakhs but top companies which are into our core space for long are our college partners.

My plans after degree is to pursue masters or right away get on with my family business as we are already into trading chemicals. However, from the number of students from our stream that apply for jobs through campus, over 80% are placed from campus. Labs to industries that deals in manufacturing of chemicals and exporting the same are the ones where students of our college get the opportunity.

Highest package from our campus is eye catching as it's 56 lakhs and for chemical branch it was 34 lakhs. HUL, Sun Pharma, public limited labs and various R&D research centres are those that have helped us to get best available jobs in market as the competition is high but BIT Mesra has still managed to place over 80% students last year.

From second semester we are taken for an hour session for special training. It is optional till 4th semester but from 5th semester onwards, it becomes mandatory and we have no choice but to go through that hammer. Finally, from the last year's 1st semester companies starts coming and we can apply for the same and that is how placements are done here.

Placement Experience:

The placement opportunities is decent for students. The placement of BIT sindri varies from branch to branch but the core brances like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering has evergreen placements. Among the eligible students around 90 percent students get placed. But in branches like civil and production engineering, its not the same. They have very low placement rate around 20 to 30% of eligible students get placement. For CSE, IT & ECE the placement is highly dependent on the situation of market and it varies early. The students are eligible from 6 the semester onwards for placement . The placement drive starts from August or September and companies visit till students graduate. The top recruiters are TCS with more than 80 students from overall campus , TATA power nearly 20 , LNT, JSW , Vedanta , TATA STEEL, JSL, ADANI, ABG , Shyam steel and For it sector companies like samsung , cognisant, hitachi, TCs, Spyder visited for 2k21 batch. For the batch 2020-2024 among batch size of 710 around 620 offers were made. The highest package is given by samsung which is around 28 LPA , students of CSE, IT, ECE and Electrical are eligible.
