Remarks

The course eligibility is based on the higher secondary exam. The college authority does not take any admission test. To study botany Hons students must have a science background with biology as a subject. And as the admission process is complete marks based you must have overall 80% marks in class 12 and in the subject biology you should have over 85 marks to get a chance. The more marks you get the higher your chance of getting a seat. You can find the application form & all other necessary instructions like the merit list, payment page, etc on their college website. The application process generally starts in the month of July right after the HS result. And for botany Hons, the admission, as well as the first year fee, was around Rs 4500. Obviously reservations are available for SC/ST/OBC candidates.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

First of all, I obtained 93 marks in Biology on my board exam. I enjoy studying biology. I'm very curious about plants and nature. So I have decided to pursue a career in Biology. We had a total of four faculties in our Botany department and in our batch, there were around 40 students. So the student-faculty ratio was like for every 10 students we have one faculty. But our professors were great. All of them are highly qualified and completed their PhD. Besides lectures, they conduct a few webinars on our subject topics and they have taken practical classes. We had a semester every 6 months. And the initial first two semesters we had to give two papers each. But we had to choose pass subjects. You can choose zoology, chemistry, physics or Maths as a pass subject. Exams are quite difficult to pass once we move towards the 5th & 6th semesters. So any student must have to study very hard to pass.

Fees and Financial Aid

This college is a government college and it is well under Calcutta university. So the fee of our college is much low than another college. The total cost of the study is around Rs 14000 in 3 years which is very less than any private college fee. I have not seen any kind of financial assistance for college. Every student can apply for SVMCM scholarships. Girls can apply for Kanyashree. Apart from this many minority students get scholarships. One can bear college fees easily through scholarships. There is many other non profits organization and private scholarships for needy students

Campus Life

4.5

We have some fun in the first one and a half years of college. Before covid, we had celebrated many cultural festivals like Saraswati Puja and Holi. The freshers' party was conducted by seniors. An annual college function was organized. It was a very wonderful experience. Many of us participated in singing and recitation. Some participated in Drama. we also celebrated many special days like Netaji Jayanti, Republic Day, Independence Day, and many more. we have a very good library room with all department books available. We had a dedicated section for Botany students. Other than this we had many fictions, and non-fiction, books and magazines available. Our library room was very peaceful, clean and organized. We had free wifi all around the campus. We had a playground, a hostel for students and a computer room, a seminar hall. In short, we had all kinds of facilities available in our college. An annual sports program was organized too. I have participated in running. There have been some indoor games too

Placement Experience:

college placements are good in this college with a number of good financial and consultancy firms coming in with new gen companies as well in the service and sales industry. moreoever getting a good placement in a top financial or consultancy placement requires a POR in a good society as a criteria, its not really required but adds to your chances of getting it. moreover you require to participate in a number of case study competitions for the same as well. my plans after graduation is probably working for a year or two after which i plan on doing my MBA. around 50-60% who apply get a placement.

In today's competitive job market it becomes important for the college to not just help students get degrees but also provide them with placements and internships so that they can have the experience needed to stand at a competitive footing with the rest of the candidates in the world. To look into this, St. Xavier's College has a Placement Cell run by Placements officer Mr. Niladri Sinha under whose guidance, various companies visit the college regularly looking for capable young minds to take under their wing and help provide them with the necessary exposure and experience so that they can combat any obstacles that they face.

The college offers good placements for economis. Students in their final year are eligible for campus placements and there is a cell dedicated to placements. Many students do not opt for placements and go for higher studies but many students who opt for it, get placed with decent packages. Many well-known companies visit the campus as well. I wish to explore my options after completing the degree as of now.

We have a placement cell helping students get placed. They keep posting opportunities like internships and fellowships throughout the year to groom students and give them exposure and experience. Placements can go to very high packages like those in Data Science, Big 4 consulting or core finance or banking jobs. CAs, CFAs and FRMs do well in the placements. The highest packages could surpass 12-13 LPA and median packages are close to 6-7 LPA. DE Shaw, Zomato, Myntra, Meesho, TCS and McKinsey are some top companies coming here.
