Remarks

IIT Bombay helped me in not just academic but overall development. The culture in the institute is such that it inculcates participation in extracurricular activities of your choice and even helps excel in it along with maintaining the right academic balance.

Entrance Preview

To get into IIT Bombay I took JEE Main and Advance examination, with JEE- Main being the qualifying examination, and rank is determined on basis of JEE advance score. My score was 250/360 in JEE Advance and my AIR was 456. I had an interest in electronics and the IIT Bombay Electrical Engineering department is one of the best in the nation, I opted for it.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

The institute has a well-defined structure giving adequate insight to various fields in electrical engineering and also offering advanced courses if someone wishes to take it forward. The profs also encourage research but more opportunities are available in senior years once you have gained sufficient knowledge. Important courses are also accompanied by assisting labs and projects are also made an integral part of courses.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, IIT Bombay due provide internships to 2nd and 3rd-year student with stipend ranging from 5k/ month (in a startup) to 2 lakh/ month. The average stipend is around 25-30k/ month for most of the companies. Few FMCG's offer 1 lakh+ / month.

Placement Experience

5

IIT Bombay sees companies from different sectors visiting placement season in December. The highest domestic package offered this year was by investment banking firm Blackstone, at Rs 35 lakh per annum. Schlumberger, one of the world’s largest oilfield services, made an offer of Rs 28 lakh per annum. Among US-based firms, Uber made a debut at the IIT-B campus and offered $110,000 this year. Microsoft also rolled out offers of $106,000. Over 100 students were picked up by the top five recruiters, with Intel Technologies alone hiring 29. This figure has gone up from last year’s 94.

College Events

5

IIT Bombay has many events and fest, most prominent of them being E-Summit(Entrepreneurship Summit- footfall of 20k), Mood Indigo(Cultural Fest - footfall of 1lakh+), and Tech fest (Technical Fest -footfall of 1lakh+). Also, this year Aavahan (Sports Fest) was started.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The total fee to be paid for the Autumn Semester 2016-17 is Rs.67,876 (for GEN / OBC candidates) and Rs. 22,876 (for SC/ST/PD). If you choose the hostel accommodation at IIT Bombay, you must pay Rs. 16,000 (Rs. 2,000 refundable mess advance + Rs. 13,000 Semester mess advance + Rs.1,000 towards Bus pass for internal transport for IITB Campus.) Now the fees have been increased for the new batch around 2 lakh/ semester making it expensive.

Fees and Financial Aid

Canara bank's and SBI's IIT Bombay branches guide with the detailed procedure for the loan on the very first day. MCM scholarship is available if parental income is < 5lakh per year. Other national and international scholarship opportunities are also available.

Campus Life

5

The campus has a skewed gender ratio with girls being less than 10 percent. The culture is open to all types of people and all possible activities that you can think of are available here. People generally don't have enough time left to explore everything and generally tend to have their loyalty to specific clubs. The environment is also lively and the campus also has a lake and Sameer hill if someone enjoys early Sunday morning treks.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Hostel facilities include all the general amenities and hygiene but the size of the rooms is too small and some rooms also lack ventilation and a balcony. In older hostels, sometimes even there are cracks on walls, and proper maintenance is required. The mess is also looked over by a student's representative and changes are easily incorporated though there is a variety of food made by nothing tastes like home.

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network is too strong with alumni being in major organizations at good positions. Senior students are helpful in guiding the journey for the coming years and senior interactions are a must. They give you information about all the possible fields you can explore but its finally up to you whom you want to follow.

Exam Structure

Exam structure for most of the courses comprises of quizzes(mostly one pre midsem and one pre endsem), assignments, mid semester and end semester examination. Labs involve set of experiments which need to be completed and one final exam. The duration of labs is generally 3 hrs and they are hectic and even involves staying over time to complete the experiments.

Admission

The admission process is a 2 step process in which you first appear for JEE main and if you are above a certain cutoff then you are eligible for JEE advance. For the general category, it was close to 120/360 in 2014. Then you appear for JEE advance in May end in which your score decides the JEE rank based on which you are eligible to select a branch at any of the IIT's through a common portal. But to do so you also need to be in the top 20 percentile of respective boards in class 12th examinations.

Faculty

5

Most of the faculty members have UG degree from some of the other Top IIT and masters & Ph.D. from reputed institutes abroad. They are well qualified for the position and often conduct research activities in their respective labs. Faculty also dedicates meeting hours for courses to discuss doubts and conduct tutorials to make understanding better.
