Remarks
I chose SRM University for my UG because of my course. Genetic engineering is not a widely found course in India. SRM had a good reputation for my course in terms of faculty and laboratory. I gained admission in SRM through SRM JEE. I enrolled in the campus soon after with my class commencing in July 18 2016. I came across SRM University from a relative who?Ûªd studied there. I combed the university website for this course and understood the course details before applying for the course. The only aspect I feel that the university could improve on is the core placements in biotechnology. Even though a few companies come for placements, it?Ûªs not many. However as most students pursue a PG after this degree, I do believe that this a subjective matter.
Course Curriculum Overview
While I?Ûªm not really sure on the faculty : student ratio, our department had about 25 faculty for 110 or more students. All the teachers are highly qualified with PHDs and post docs from prestigious universities. The main teaching method is through PowerPoint presentation and normal chalk board presentation. A few of the classes however had few practical aspects too. The term exams were always conducted in proper time with the result being published within a month. The exams were not hard to pass considering you have good internals.
Internships Opportunities
Yes I opted for several internships. I interned during my semester break in CMFRI( Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute), Biotechnology dept of Kerala University, Unibiosys, and Kerala police forensic division. I did my major project in IISC Bangalore. The university do offer chances to work with faculties on research projects. However these are not paid.
Placement Experience
The placement process starts in the 7th semester in Engineering. Companies like Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, byjus, cleartax and many more visit the campus for placements. The highest package offered was 20,00,000 per year and the average being 3,60,000-4,00,000.Almost all the students registering for placements get placed with the percentage being near 100.I planned to pursue my Master?Ûªs degree.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The course fee was Rs. 2.15 lacs per year for my course. Scholarships were offered to students who had a high percentage in class 12 or who scored a high rank in SRM JEE. Decrease in tuition fee was also provided to those students who maintained a consistent CGPA.There are no part time jobs on campus with stipend.
Campus Life
The two fests conducted on campus were Aarrush and Milan with the former being the technical fest and the latter a cultural fest. Aarrush is conducted by the September of every year and Milan in February-March.The 4 floor library in the UNIVERSITY Building is well stocked with 1000s of books for references. Each classroom boasted a smart class in the perfect condition. Many clubs including dance, music, drama etc were active on campus in addition to sports like basketball, football, cricket etc.
Hostel Facilities
SRM has a separate portal for hostel booking. There are many hostels available for both boys and girls. An NRI and international hostel is also available for students.Dormitories costs less than Rs1,00,000 a year including food with the normal hostels costing about 1,10,000 including food. The new hostel block has amazing rooms with the cost of non AC rooms being 1,30,000 a year including food and AC rooms costing almost 2,00,000 a year with food.I lived in ESQ-A block for 3 years which is an in campus accommodation.
Admission
SRM JEE was the exam I had to clear for my admission into the course. The 11th and 12th standard topics were asked for the exam in MCQ pattern. The exam was fairly easy to pass. I prepared using textbooks as well as guides.
