Remarks
The admission process was through JoSaa counselling. And it was based according to the JEE advance rank. I was lucky enough to get qualified and got into one of the top IITs of India. During counselling, I filled the preference form in which some top IITs like IIT BOMBAY was my first priority but didn't get into it because I do not meet the required rank. I availed myself of the GENERAL EWS category. The admission criteria of my program were strictly based on the JEE advance guidelines given and were strictly monitored. The minimum marks were based on JEE advance ranks, and 12th passed students of the particular year and previous year were only allowed to give exam. The admission process was 2 months long procedure but was well managed, highly efficient with all the things taken into account. My overall experience was good and satisfying.
Course Curriculum Overview
During the first year, i.e, two semesters, irrespective of course every student was given the same subjects and same curriculum. Since it is an IIT, all the professors are extremely well achieved and even during the tough Corona times, they have managed to teach very well through online classes. IIT (ISM) is famous for its Earth Science Department all over the world and my course is luckily APPLIED GEOPHYSICS which is one of the best provided by the institute. And the professors in my department are really good. There is a healthy relationship between professors and students and quite a good faculty to student ratio. There are even many JRFs to help us. We had 4 quizzes and 1 end sem in each semester during online classes and 1 midterm and 1 endsem per semester during offline mode. The online curriculum is quite hectic due to 4 quizzes but overall it is fine. The exam difficulty is moderate and if you study well and attend classes with sincerity you can pass without much difficulty.
Internships Opportunities
Internships opportunities are available from 1st summer break only. But one required excellence in required skills to avail the ample opportunities available. Stipends depend on the workload and the skills one has mastered. PPO which stands for pre-placement offers is also given. Although everyone doesn't get the opportunity, it's quite a tough competition plus the stipends also vary extremely. Our batchmates have participated in many competition and tasks like Hackathon and made projects and had won.
Placement Experience
The 7th semester for BTECH and the 9th semester for integrated MTECH students are available for on-campus placements. There are 100+ companies visit and being an IIT, the minimum package offered is 6 lakh. The highest placement of this year is 90 lakh per annum. The placement statistics are quite good and likely high priority of students to get placed. Since it is founded in 1926, it has a strong alumni network. Computer science departments and coding included curriculum get placed easily. It is hard for non-coding branches and extremely hard for average and below-average students in it. But off-campus placements and companies open to all branches provide some hope. Some of our alumni are studying in top university like Standford. My plans are getting a job or going into higher studies, any one of them. Also, many of our alumni have cleared GATE, UPSC etc exams with flying colours. There is absolutely not 100% placement but it's quite good especially in some branches.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees structure is quite expensive considering the fact that it is a government college and one of the prestigious engineering college of India. But the fees of IITs have been rapidly increased over the years, which might be that's the reason. As well as there are numerous scholarships available and fee waiver is also given according to family income and caste certificate criteria. Scholarships like MCM, state scholarships, ISMANA are there. Also, SBI bank offers loan with less interest for the institute students. Jobs are offered in good stats. Stipends are also good and INTERNS from 1st year itself can be started. Also, JAM qualified people got stipends and GATE qualified also (integrated course people too in 5th year).
Campus Life
The annual cultural fest is - SRIJAN. It is a 3-day long fest held in March every year. It is one of the biggest Eastern India college fests and some celebrities had performed in it. This year it was cancelled due to Covid. CONCETTO is the technical fest. PARAKRAM is the games and sports fest. BASANT is the alumni reunion fest and PRANTIBIMB is the interdepartmental cultural fest. KRYPTOS is for 1st years. Apart from it, numerous cultural festivals are celebrated. INTER - IIT competitions happen and our institute actively takes part. The Central Library is extremely large and beautiful and one of the hotspots site of the Institute. Clubs are run by the student with respective professors as the guardian. Student Gymkhana is the student's elective body that establishes the connection link between students and administration staff. Some departmental sites are also there and various students chapters like SEG, EAGE exists.
Hostel Facilities
The institute has 9 hostels . 2 of them are for girls and the rest 7 for boys. The Hostel fee is at an affordable price. And registration process is also simple. How much I have heard, meal quality is also fine and depends upon in which year you are in as hostels are given according to it. 1st years boys get jasper hostels. There is a good internet connection and other facilities vary according to hostels. Each hostel has itw own mess, gym and some games respective courts. Some like rosaline has shopping centers. Newspaper, laundry facilities avaliable. High-speed WIFI, television rooms there.
