Remarks
Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi is a good college overall. The campus is small yet beautiful, the faculty consists mainly of knowledgeable and approachable people. The negative aspect would be that ASAS doesn't have clubs or teams for sports and extracurricular activities. The commerce and management courses are only open to female students. The rest of the departments admit both male and female students. There are a number of college fest organized by the various departments that everyone can take part in. ASAS was taking applications for admission in June while most of the colleges in Kochi had closed their admission process. The admission process was very simple and it took around 45 minutes to complete the entire procedure. ASAS has a unique BBA program that specializes in Logistics Management. I preferred this college since I found this program interesting.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course since I wanted to learn about supply chain management and logistics. It is a unique BBA program that not many other colleges in Kerala are offering. The Commerce and Management Department consists of approximately 10-15 permanent faculty and around 5-10 visiting faculty. Each batch of the BBA program usually has around 20-30 students and Bcom has around 60- 80 students. Most of the faculty members are well qualified to have doctorates and many years of teaching experience. Most of the professors use PowerPoint presentations to teach and the others use the board for subjects like accounts and mathematics. They are open to suggestions from students. There are two periodical exams and one final semester exam. The periodical exams are usually conducted in February and March for the even semester and September and October for the odd semester. They are not at all difficult to pass. The paper is always set in a way that all students can pass if they are prepared.
Placement Experience
Students are eligible to take part in campus placements from the 5th semester. The college has an industrial relations department that prepares students for placement exams, GD and PIs. The companies that usually visit campus include, Deloitte, Wipro, Federal Bank, D E Shaw, Infosys, and many others. The positions are mainly that of junior associate or analyst in finance. The salary packages vary from 2.5 L to 6 L based on the company and the position offered. There aren't many placement opportunities for BBA students that are looking for a job related to their specialization (logistics). The percentage of students that get placed is small. I plan to attend campus placements that are open to me during the course.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
The fees are charged each semester and it has to be paid at the beginning of the semester. The receipt for fees will be provided to students with the breakdown of the fees, various methods to pay them, and the deadline of payment. The college provides assistance to students that are paying fees through bank loans. The fees can be anywhere between Rs. 37,000 and Rs. 39,000 per semester. The amount fluctuates between these numbers based on the cost of textbooks. The college does provide financial assistance and scholarships based on merit, family background, etc. There are no jobs on campus for the students.
Campus Life
The day-to-day campus life is laid back and easygoing. There are departmental fests that are organized by each department and conducted mainly in the even semester. The main events include Sastramritam (mathematics department fest), Visual Media department fest, and Management fest. There are also events organized by the English department. Students from colleges all over India are welcome to take part in the various events of these fests. They take place on campus and goes on for 2-3 days. All classrooms are installed with a TV system for teaching purposes. None of the classrooms have air conditioners. This campus does not have many sports or extracurricular activities but the department heads are open to hearing any suggestions from students. They also encourage students to come up with ideas and organize events. Spic Macay is one of the main cultural events where experts from all over India visit campus for a whole week and teach various art forms to interested students.
