Remarks
The factors that made me choose this particular college were the reputation, the teaching standards, the exposure (considering it's a media program, and exposure matters), the location, student activities, career opportunities, practical learning skills, on campus facilities and amenities, diversity on campus, the campus size. Moreover, the initial meeting with the professors peaked my interest. They were extremely friendly and understanding. They treated me well and listened to what I had to say. Teachers play a very important part in our education. I made sure I chose the right person to be trained from.
Course Curriculum Overview
Mass media is a recent field of course and not many people know about this course. It's still being introduced to the general masses. Being a new field, the course, the syllabus, they are all quite updated. It's important in media to always stay on the top, to know what's the trend and to follow the trend, to stay in the loop. Since our first year of mass media, we've been given highly creative assignments such as photography, filmography, directing, newspaper editing, research projects, film making, directing, video editing, etc. Exposure has never been a problem for us. The purpose of mass media is to reach to the audience and connect with them in the best possible way. All our professors have ensured we get the right the amount of exposure from the start. Some of our works are chosen and uploaded on huge platforms. We've inter college fests where we get the biggest platform to showcase our talent in front of celebrities and hundreds of people.
Internships Opportunities
I worked as a vlogger for a month for TCE a few months back. The work I used to do there included shooting and editing videos. Basically, I was a content creator. For every video, I got 300/- INR.
Placement Experience
The placements and job opportunities come in plenty. Media is a course which is still evolving. The more the people know about the course, the more they realise the importance of this course. Media is required almost everywhere. It covers multiple subjects in just one course of tree years. The ad agencies, the journalism industry, all look forward to give a platform to young and new talent. Innovation and creativity is always welcomed in mass media. Right now, I've just started my fifth semester. We get placement and job opportunities when we are close to the end of our fifth semester. However, in some cases, our teachers refer us to companies and agencies they see fit for us. Our professors are all engaged in the media industry and have connections all over the agency with a lot of people. Finding people who are willing to hire new talent isn't that difficult. Alumni example: Manasi Girishchandra Joshi is an Indian para-badminton athlete and used to be a student of Somaiya Vidyavihar. Our batch is yet to learn and know more before going for a start up. But, we've created various online startup content and web development pages and we work to make it better everyday.
College Events
The campus life has been full of opportunities, ideas, creativity, and openness. We've inter college and intra college fests from time to time. We manage events. We cover the events, we anchor, dance, sing, do fashion rallies, poetry, essay writing, dictation, debate, etc. It's always been a learning opportunity for us. The name of our college fest is Megahertz and it has been a huge success for us. We've worked really hard to make Megahertz a successful event and maintain it's reputation. Every year, we welcome new talents and ideas and give them the platform to showcase their talent. We invite celebrity guests to judge the shows and events. We make the fest as interactive as possible. We've special days such as saree day, kurti day, food day, etc. where the entire classes participates and comes together under one roof to celebrate the happy times.
Fees and Financial Aid
I have not availed for any scholarship or loan facility that I know of. I've very little knowledge on this, however, I won't deny to the fact that there are scholarships and loan facilities available.
Campus Life
Somaiya Vidyavihar is known to be the college with the largest campus in Mumbai. We've more than five huge canteens where we get lunch, breakfast, snacks. We've water fountains, chess board tiles for us to play chess, ludo tiles, other attractive infrastructure and two to three sports and playing ground, cricket ground, basketball ground, football ground, more than ten huge buildings for every other department and course. The campus is spacious. We've plenty of room everywhere. We've seven amphitheatres where the huge events such as fests, pujas, etc, take place. We've conference rooms in every building for educational purposes. The classroom infrastructure is remarkable. We've got the black board, white board and the projector facilities. Water filters, lifts, and other amenities are also available.
Hostel Facilities
I've not opted for any hostel facilities. However, I have rented an apartment with a few of my friends and it is close to our college. It is quite easy to avail the hostel facility if you're an outstation student. The executives guide you through the entire process. The hostel fee is reasonable.
