Remarks

Overall the College is one of the finest places to study in Punjab after the IIT and NIT.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The curriculum is up to date with the current standards according to the AICTE norms and is very similar to the IIT and NIT pattern. Exams are divided into internals, externals, quizes etc making learning a continuous process. Industrial visits are held every semester and students have visited sites like All India Radio and Prasar Bharti. The curriculum is relevant to the industrial standards and the placement record has always been very good. Recently Samsung hired an ECE student at 12 LPA package.

Placement Experience

3.5

The placement of the college is average as most of the employers are Mass Recruiting IT firms like Accenture, TCS, Infosys etc but some companies like Sapient, Samsung, Airtel etc have offered packages ranging above 7 LPA with some management firms like Byju's offering around 18 LPA. The general steps are Aptitude tests followed by Group Discussions and Personal Interviews. Out of eligible students around 60-75% students get at least one placement offer. The institute tries to enhance aptitude skills by arranging mandatory classes in collaboration with third party vendors like Time etc.

College Events

4

Techincal Fest - Atharva is held once every year. Cultural fest - Genesis is held once every year Apart from these 2 main fests, various events and fests are arranged around the year. Each department arranges its own fests and various technical socities like SCIE and ISTE arrange events thouroughout the year.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is very nominal. The tution fee is around 50,000 Rupees per semester. The Hostel and Mess fee is around 20,000 rupees per semester. There are no other charges. The college accepts NEFT, Bank Transfer and UPI mode of payment. Demand draft is also accepted.

Fees and Financial Aid

The College offers various scholarships and also offers a Fee Waiver Scheme for students from middle class families. I availed the fee waiver scheme the condition for which was having a family annual income of less than 4 LPA. The students falling under this category can apply directly in the fee waiver category during the online counseling round. The number of seats under this category is very less(3 seats in each branch). The seats are given according to the merit list prepared accorind to JEE main rank. The fee for this category is just Rs. 10,000 each semester but the student need to pay the Hostel and Mess fee.

Campus Life

4

The campus life is very peaceful. Many of the students are from rural background as the motto of the College is upliftment of rural students. The gender ratio like in other Engineering colleges is around 80:20 males to females. There are many cultural and technical societies which are very active in the campus and arrange events regularly. Students from Punjab form the majority but there are many students from other states of India like UP, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir etc. The campus is very tolerant to different religious views. The divide based on economic status and political views is hardly visible but the campus is not very acceptable of Homosexuality. The students from other states may sometimes feel a little left out but in general the campus is very acceptable of different communities.

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network is very strong. The College being one of the oldest has very large alumni base. Many passed students have also retired from prestigious institutions like PSPCL, Indian Railways etc. The alumni have reached the top in many large organisations. Recently an alumnus of the College Mr. Karan Bajwa, has been made the MD of Google cloud operations in India.

Admission

Admission is based on the JEE Main rank and a merit list is prepared according to the rank. The students need to apply on the University website ( IKG PTU). The counselling is held online and a position to study is offered according to the merit list. The process starts in May - June and ends by mid August. If any seats remain vacant after the online counselling then the college arranges Spot Counselling round at the college premise. The college is one of the oldest Engineering College in North India and is ranked constantly in the 100 best institutes of the country. The alumni base is very strong. Electronics and Communication is one of the best branches of the college and has great teachers and support staff with the latest technical instruments available. The placement record of ECE is also very good with around 60-75% eligible students gettin a placement offer.

Faculty

4

Most of the faculty is very well trained and experienced. Most of them are doctorates or are currently writing their thesis. The average age of the faculty is around 35-40 years and the senior professors have an experience of more than 20 years. Many of the teachers have studied in the best institutes of the country like IIT, NIT etc.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not that good. Although companies come, there is a lack of mass recruiters or reputed organizations. One has to grind hard here for placements. If you're a CS student, you will have to face immense competition here. As for core branches, placements are severely dry. Students gets eligible in 4th year onwards for placements. Some of recruiters here are Trident, TCS, Reliance, Sonalika and other few. Every company offers around 10-15 selected students for a job. Highest package ever was 15LPA and average is 3.2LPA. Percentage placed is only around 15% here. My plans after the degree are to apply for govt exams.
