Remarks

Management is one of the worst I've seen. College is great in the part of educational tours thourough which you'll cover almost all Forest types of the country. Also some scientists are amazing. And there are lot of opportunities for relevant projects. The worst part is university's unsupportive attitude, and bad management.

Course Curriculum Overview

1

Course curriculum, for MSc forestry is quite outdated, not upto the present need, and teaches you methods and techniques which were in use some 5 decades ago or so. Present equipments are either unavailable with them or they are just not enough for their use in educational purposes. Not research driven, and even if you want to do some research work on your own, you'll be deterred from it by the university administration. Few placements, but not significant enough to mention (the university website's information on placements is misleading). And, the best part of studying here is, visits. Both, in the fields, and industrial visits. Which is quite frequent, and most finely managed. Rest of the university is run by few people only.

Placement Experience

0.5

The placements are not so great. Also there are no great prospects in forestry in private sector in India. There are few in agroforestry and relevant fields. Few of my mates are placed in JK papers, which is a paper manufacturing firm. Of the class of 40 students, 2 got placed. So 5% placements (here, I'm taking about forestry. In the wood science and technology course, placements are 100%). University, quite unexpectedly, do not allow its students to do an internship, and often discourages the students to join somewhere as intern. Though few of the students do internship, without the knowledge if university. And if asked the permission to do internship, the dean, and university administration refuses, usually the reason being, it may lead to missing few classes which is not acceptable to them.

College Events

1.5

One, quite formal, cultural festival. No other such event. There used to be celebrations of various Indian festivals amongst students, and also festive celebrations of farewell and Freshers which, quite contrary to students choices, are strictly restricted by the dean of the university.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee are feasible, compared to private institutions. Though, is expensive if compared to government colleges. Paid per semester. Average, it is INR 40000 per semester. While securing admission, fees for 1st semester and some security deposit are made.

Fees and Financial Aid

Only one scholarship per course is offered to the one getting highest marks. In 1st semester it is based on entrance exam results. The scholarship amount is INR 13000, which is about the fifth of the annual tuition fee.

Campus Life

0.5

Campus life is good, only if you're one into nature. The campus has some amazing, biodiversity, including the highest diversity of birds in any college campus in India, a great plant diversity, and some splendid diversity of butterflies and moths and snakes. But if you're more is party kind of person, there are not good options. You like practically in a jungle. Just a bit more equipped jungle. One annual sports meet, one cultural festival annually, and few activities by students groups. There form some good birding and nature walk groups. The hostel life, dorm parties are, as anywhere else, quite great, unforgettable experience.

Hostel Facilities

0.5

Yes. Full hostel facility is there for all students. There are different hostels are girls and boys. The food in the boys hostel is terrible, and usually not quite edible. One in girls hostel is pretty well. The food is unhygienic, cooked in not so comely conditions. The hostel rooms are quite good, but the conditions of toilets are deplorable.

Alumni/Alumna

Not so strong alumni network. Not is forming gradually, and alumnus being helpful. There is some interactions with college seniors, but again, there isn't that much time for good bonding.

Admission

The admission us thourough a common entrance test, conducted in may and merit list released somewhere in june, and admissions happen in early 2nd week of July. For the admission procedure, some list of documents are required which are listed on the notification. The merit list has the names of the selected candidates, and also accompanies it a waitlisted students' list, who usually gets the admissions, as the few students in the main list either do not consider for admission or withdraws it for some other options.

Faculty

2.5

The faculty is quite good. As there is no formal faculty in the university, and the scientists from the FRI and WII and other relevant institutions teaches us. Which is a better part, as they have more field exposure and better practical experiences to teach. The negative part is, few scientists, despite being quite good ones, aren't so good at teaching in the class. The university administration is extremely unsupportive, often assigning the classes to those scholars or scientists.

I have done my Bachelors in Agriculture so I was more of interested in plant physiology ,genetics ,breeding and seed pathology etc, so as seed science is a part of this course I have chosen this course. The course helps in many real world experiences as we perform field work , we have done work on millets as 2023 was the international year of millets, we have started work on seed priming in lab , started multilocational trials on wheat, millets , started work on seed pathology on various vegetables etc. The improvements needed in course is that the timing of our main exam given is only 2 hrs and the 4 long answers questions are ti be written which is of 15 marks respectively which should be increased.

the curriculum included a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. fieldwork, internships, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, and industrial workshops enhance real-world applicability. the scientific and research methods we learn prepare us for further academic careers in research. improvements: practicing modern agricultural techniques like digital farming, drones or aeroponics will prepare us for our future endeavors. we had the semester system, where the exams were spaced out by 6 months. we had a total of 8 semesters. the difficulty level was normal to medium but the marking by the university was very harsh.

Remarks:

In the past FRI was considered the temple of Forestry. I think it was because of some reason. Reason could be the management, administration and quality students. I'm hopeful that if quality students are provided with best management and administration, then it can regain it's old reputation. They will have to be a bit more serious for quality syllabus as well as faculty. Seriousness is not just limiting attendence to 75% or more. Moreover quality doesn't come from attendence or something.
