I wrote this piece as part of my attempt to join the committee that connects with future IIM students. Although I didn't get selected, I still wanted to share it with everyone.
LIFE AT IIM KASHIPUR
Imagine a girl from a small town in Jharkhand, a boy who's never left his city, another from the NCR, and a guy who's spent three years in an MNC. They all had different lives but shared a dream: to study at an IIM. Little did they know, they'd spend the next two years at IIM Kashipur, nestled in the Himalayas. This isn't just their story but the story of many who call IIM Kashipur home for two years.
Here at IIM Kashipur, you'll find a mix of people from all walks of life, speaking different languages and bringing unique stories. When they join, they become part of the IIM Kashipur family. From the intense induction program that hints at what the next two years hold to the surprise fresher’s party by seniors, it’s everything you hear about life at an IIM.
Life here isn't easy, with loads of assignments, readings, projects, case studies, quizzes, and those early morning classes, even on weekends. But as time goes on, you get used to it. Rushing to morning classes feels like an Olympic sprint for attendance, but it’s worth it for the knowledge you gain. Late-night project discussions at the canteens turn out to be fun, not a chore. Weekend classes might mess with your plans, but a free weekday makes up for it.
Even with all the studying and lectures, everyone makes time for their favorite sports, hanging out, partying, and hobbies. Plus, students here celebrate every festival with joy and enthusiasm.
As students of IIM Kashipur, we can say,
"The path is ready, the goal is set, We just need to follow it, aiming to be the best"
Known as the 'IIM in the North', IIM Kashipur is quite chilly in the winter. Thankfully, radiant cooling helps, and when that isn't enough, students take breaks from their busy schedules to enjoy bonfire nights and other fun activities.
Spending two years here means you'll definitely leave as a capable and improved manager. It's well-known that life at an IIM is quite busy, and students are used to following demanding schedules. You’ll see them hurrying to classes in the morning and, even at 2 am, having discussions about assignments or life in general.
Location Perks
IIM Kashipur focuses on the overall development of students. It offers many opportunities due to its location in a heavily industrialized area with over 180 industries nearby. This gives students great chances for hands-on learning through industry interactions and live projects. There's a strong connection with local industries, and students can take part in cultural activities, sports, and entrepreneurial ventures outside the classroom too.
The campus is entirely student-driven, with student bodies managing everything from placements to events like the Annual Fest, Agnitraya, management conclaves, and TEDx. Being involved in these groups helps students learn time management, teamwork, and how to maintain good relationships with the administration. Besides, the campus has a canteen run by students to provide late-night snacks, alongside the regular mess and other eateries.
The institute launched 'Vikas', a program to develop entrepreneurial skills among business owners and corporate professionals.
Campus Lingo
An interesting aspect of life at IIM Kashipur is the unique language and slang. These phrases often bring laughter. If you enjoy giving long speeches, you might be called out for 'Faff', as brief and to-the-point talks are preferred. Another common phrase is ‘param tatva praapthi’, which you’ll quickly understand in context. The word 'Chocolate' is special and fun to use, but its true meaning is a campus secret. To find out, you’ll need to become a student and experience campus life yourself.
Late-Night Hangouts
Students find time to relax at special campus spots. The Night Canteen, run by students, is one such place where late-night cravings are satisfied. Here, you can eat, chat, and unwind with friends. Shageer Bhai’s Canteen is particularly popular for its catchy name. Another hangout is Vimal Ki Dukaan, humorously named like a grocery store, but it's a favorite eating spot for students.
Campus Events
Throughout the year, students at IIM Kashipur engage in numerous activities. Recently, they organized a national-level seminar, NEEV, focusing on logistics and supply chain topics, along with a case study competition. The campus also hosts ENVISAGE, a national competition on innovative film marketing ideas. One of the major events is "Excelsior," a festival combining sports and more.
