Which is better, CSE or CSAI in IIIT Delhi?

IIIT Delhi has both CSE and CSAI (Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence). here's what's actually different:

CSE: core computer science curriculum — algorithms, OS, databases, networks, systems. the broadest CS program. placements ~96-97%. admission purely via JEE Main/JAC Delhi rank.

CSAI (CS + AI):

focuses on AI, ML, deep learning, data science alongside core CS fundamentals
curriculum has more math (linear algebra, probability, optimization) and AI-specific courses
same JEE Main admission route
placements comparable to CSE (~95%+)
slightly newer program, hence somewhat less proven alumni network than CSE

which is better? honestly for most software career paths, both are equivalent. companies recruiting at IIIT Delhi don't strongly distinguish between CSE and CSAI at the interview stage. but:

if you want to go into AI/ML research or product roles specifically — CSAI is a better fit because the curriculum is more focused
if you want general software engineering flexibility — CSE keeps all doors open
CSAI's heavy math requirement means it's tougher if math isn't your strength

both are excellent. if you're genuinely into AI/ML, CSAI is a meaningful differentiator. if you're undecided about specialization, CSE is safer.

IIIT Delhi offers both electives and mandatory courses. Students are at freedom to make a choice in case of electives while there is no such choice in mandatory courses.

Now, the best part of the CSE branch at IIIT Delhi is that it has the maximum elective slots of any other branch. So, students get to choose electives from a wide range of courses like

AI
Systems
Security
Design
Electronics
Economics

CSE will offer more academic flexibility than CSAI. CSAI will have some mandatory AI electives which might be beneficial if you are interested in the field. Also, you won’t have to study useless courses and can focus on AI. However, you will be restricted to the AI field, unlike CSE which gives you enough flexibility to pursue the field of your choice. Unless you are certain of your interest in AI, it’s best to choose CSE.
