yes, IIIT Delhi does allow branch change, but the process is competitive:

eligibility: branch change is allowed after completing the first year (2 semesters). you need a minimum CGPA — typically 8.5 or above to be considered. the exact threshold varies year to year based on available seats and applicant pool.

how it works:

  • you apply through the academic office at the end of Year 1
  • branch changes are granted based on merit (CGPA ranking among applicants)
  • seats in the target branch must be available
  • the popular direction is non-CS ? CSE, which is very competitive

practical reality: CSE seats at IIIT Delhi are limited and many students from ECE/CSD/CBI want to shift to CSE. so even with 8.5+ CGPA, it's not guaranteed. ECE ? CSE is harder than, say, CSD ? CSE.

best strategy: focus on first year academics from day 1. aim for 9+ CGPA to maximize your chances. also, CSD (Computer Science and Design) at IIIT Delhi is very similar to CSE in curriculum and placements, so if you're in CSD, a branch change to CSE may not even be necessary.

Change of branch at IIIT Delhi is possible but subject to certain rules and regulations. The change of branch from one program to the other begins only after the grades of the second semester are out. You will have to fill a form for the same and can also mention more than one program in the order of preference. Here are the rules and regulations pertaining to branch change

  • You must have passed all credits specified for the first two semesters of the B.Tech. program.
  • You must have received a B- or better grade in both CSE courses of the first year, to be eligible for transfer to the CSE program.
  • You must have received a B- or better grade in both ECE courses as well as both Mathematics courses of the first year, to be eligible for transfer to ECE program.
  • You must have received a B- or better grade in both CSE courses as well as both Mathematics courses of the first year, to be eligible for transfer to the CSAM program.
  • The students eligible for program transfer will be ordered in a priority list based on CGPA.
  • The final strength of any program shall not be reduced by more than 10% of its base strength. Also, the final strength of any program shall not increase by more than 10% of its base strength.

Hope this helps you!
