yes, there is a Delhi quota at DU but it works differently from what most people expect:

for UG admission via CUET: DU colleges don't have a formal state-based quota like NITs do. admission to all central universities is through CUET scores on All India merit. a student from Kerala can compete equally with a Delhi student for a DU seat.

however, there IS a functional advantage for Delhi students:

  • DU has specific wards of employees quota (for children of DU/Delhi Govt employees)
  • Kashmiri Migrants and certain minority/SC/ST quotas with Delhi domicile requirements
  • some affiliated Delhi colleges have special category seats for Delhi residents in specific courses

ECA (Extra Curricular Activity) and Sports quotas are also available — these are open to all but trials happen in Delhi, making it easier for local students practically.

the real Delhi advantage is in NRI quota and management quota at some colleges where Delhi residents may get preference.

bottom line: DU undergraduate admission via CUET has no official Delhi state quota for general merit seats. it's All India merit. the quotas that exist are institutional (employees, minority, sports/ECA) not purely geography-based. check the specific DU admission brochure each year for the exact seat matrix.

The "Delhi student quota" at DU is one of the biggest misconceptions in Delhi college admissions. Let me clear this up once and for all.

The direct answer: There is NO Delhi state quota at Delhi University.

DU is a Central University — funded by the Central Government. Central universities cannot legally create state-based quotas (only state government universities can do that). DU admissions via CUET are open to all Indian students equally regardless of state.

But here's what Delhi students DO get indirectly:

  • Fee concessions (not seat reservations) at some Delhi government-run DU colleges for Delhi residents. This is a fee subsidy, not an admission advantage.
  • ECA (Extra-Curricular Activities) and Sports quota: Delhi students naturally dominate these categories because they have access to DU auditions/trials. About 5% of seats across DU colleges go through ECA/Sports — and this is where Delhi students have a real edge.
  • Kashmiri Migrants: Separate seats (NOT for all Delhi students, only KM category).

The takeaway: DU is competitive for everyone. If you're from Delhi and missed the CUET cutoff, check ECA/Sports quota if applicable. Otherwise, SOL or DU Off-Campus (NCWEB) are the alternatives under DU umbrella.

There is a quota for Delhi students at DU. In a recently concluded hearing, the Delhi High Court stated that a Delhi student who graduates from an NCR school will not be eligible for the Delhi Quota for college admissions. The Delhi High Court heard a petition from a class 12 student seeking the benefit of reservation for college admission and clarified that the Delhi Quota will be applied based on school, not domicile. In all Delhi University colleges, 85 percent of the seats are reserved for Delhi residents, while 15 percent are reserved for candidates from outside the city.

Below is a list of 12 Delhi University Colleges that are fully sponsored by the Delhi Government.

Indira Gandhi Institute of Phy. Education & Sports Science Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies
Shaheed RajGuru College Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College
Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College Acharya Narendra Dev College
Bhagini Nivedita College Keshav Maha Vidyalaya
Maharaja Agrasen College Aditi Mahavidyalaya
Maharshi Balmiki College of Education Bhaskara Charya College of Applied Science

DU Quota System is further explained through this video

According to the proposal by the Delhi Government, the colleges that receive 50% capital grants and 5% recurring grants from the Delhi State Government will likely have 50% reservations for Delhites. This list includes 16 colleges, which are as follows:

Bharti College Gargi College
Delhi College of Arts and Commerce Kalindi College
Maitreyi College Rajdhani College
Shivaji College Satyawati College
Vivekananda College Satyawati College
Kamala Nehru College Motilal Nehru College
Laxmi Bai College Shyama Prasad Mukharji College
Sri Aurobindo College Shaheed Bhagat Singh College

Every year, DU announces its annual hiking cut-offs, which include only the best students from across the country. Some colleges have cutoffs as high as 100%.
