AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow) year back rule:

AKTU year back: a student is detained (year back / year drop) if they have more than a certain number of backlogs that prevent promotion to the next year.

under AKTU regulations: students must clear all papers of Years 1-2 before appearing in Year 3 exams. specifically:

  • to get promoted from 2nd year to 3rd year: must have cleared all 1st year subjects
  • to get promoted from 3rd year to 4th year: must have cleared all 2nd year subjects
  • carrying too many KTs (backlogs) beyond this limit results in 'year back' — you repeat the year

in 2021 specifically, AKTU issued special provisions allowing students to carry some backlogs due to COVID disruptions — some relaxations were made. check the official AKTU notification on aktu.ac.in for the regulations applicable to your batch as rules have been modified over years. your college's exam department has the exact detention rules for your specific scheme.

The AKTU year back rule has confused students for years because it's been updated multiple times. Here's the current position as of 2024.

Year back vs. ATKT — the key distinction: AKTU no longer has a traditional "full year back" system the way it existed pre-2019. The current policy is:

  • ATKT (carry-forward): If you fail in 1-3 subjects in a semester, you get ATKT — you move to the next semester but must clear those papers in subsequent exams.
  • Semester detain (functional year back): If you fail in 4 or more subjects in a single semester, you cannot register for the next semester until you clear enough papers to fall back under the 4-subject limit.
  • Cumulative limit: You cannot carry more than 4 backlogs total from any previous semesters at one time. If you accumulate 5+, you're blocked from the next semester.

What most answers get wrong:

  • The "4 subject limit" is per-semester AND cumulative — both conditions apply.
  • Time limit: You must complete BTech within 6 years from date of admission. After 6 years, you're automatically expelled and must re-apply for readmission.
  • Internal (sessional) marks failing also counts toward backlog count — it's not just theory.

Practical advice: Use AKTU's KT attempt windows strategically — two exam windows per year (odd sem + even sem). Don't let KTs pile up past Year 2.

Well AKTU has changed the passing rules for students. The students have to score at least 50% credit marks including theory and practical exam marks. Before this rule, students had to score 60% credit separately in Theory Exam and Practical Exams.

Now credit is something which you get after clearing the exams. Credits are given by combining the internal and external results. And passing the external exam is a must. If you have internal back but you score well in university exams and clear the subject then you will also earn credit.

AKTU Passing Rules:

First/ Second/ Third Year Back Rule are as follows.

  • If you get 1000 marks but have 4 subjects back still you shall be promoted.
  • If you have 1000 marks with 5 backs you fall under the year back situation.
  • And if you score less than 1000 marks or have 4 subjects back then you are promoted but you have to cover 1000 marks in one year.

Final Year Back Rules are as follows.

  • In the final year, you have to study in all 9 subjects and have to pass 6 subjects maximum.
  • But if you have more than 3 subjects back then you will fail the exam.

Now, these are a few year-back rules in AKTU which you should keep in mind.
