This amount represents only the institute fees and does not include hostel fees. This is the fee structure for the first semester; from the second semester onward, the one-time fees are not applicable.

Additionally, there is a fee waiver system at IITs:

• If your parental income is less than ?1 lakh per annum, there will be a full remission of tuition fees (?1 lakh).
• If the income is between ?1 lakh and ?5 lakh, there will be a two-thirds remission of tuition fees.

They also provide interest-free loans to students.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Civil Engineering offers a solid ROI, with a tuition fee around 4-5 lakh for students like me benefiting from scholarships, and a placement rate of about 70% where top companies pay high packages, including a highest of 2.65 crore. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering likely has a similar fee structure but may attract a slightly different set of companies. Both colleges have good campus life and facilities, but IIT Delhi edges out in terms of placement opportunities and salaries. For someone who prioritizes immediate job prospects and financial returns, IIT Delhi is the smarter choice. However, if you're passionate about instrumentation and prefer a broader engineering experience, IIT Kharagpur could still be a great option.

IIT Delhi’s B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering offers outstanding placement opportunities, especially with top companies like Amazon and Google actively recruiting, while IIT Kharagpur’s B.Tech in Agricultural and Food Engineering may not have the same level of visibility in tech-centric job markets. The internship options at IIT Delhi are abundant, particularly in AI/ML, which is a booming field. IIT Kharagpur has a solid program, but the job prospects in agriculture are comparatively limited and often depend on market conditions. If you're aiming for a high-paying tech job, go for IIT Delhi; however, if you're passionate about agriculture and food technology, IIT Kharagpur could still be a great fit, albeit with less lucrative job packages.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Textile Technology offers solid placements with over 90% of students getting hired, but the highest packages are lower compared to IIT Madras. In contrast, IIT Madras's Computer Science and Engineering program boasts impressive placement stats, with top packages reaching up to 2.5 crore per annum and an average of 20 lakh, making it a hotspot for tech talent. If you're leaning towards a tech career with high earning potential, IIT Madras is clearly the better option. However, if you're passionate about textiles and prefer a less intense curriculum, IIT Delhi could be a good fit. Ultimately, it depends on your career goals and interests.

Fee structure for IIT Delhi:

1. Tuition Fee

• For General and OBC category students with a family income above 5 lakh: ?1 lakh per semester.
• For those with a family income between 1 lakh and 5 lakh: approximately ?33,000 per semester (one-third of the tuition fee).
• If family income is below 1 lakh: no tuition fee required.
• For ST/SC category students: tuition fee is waived off, regardless of family income.

2. Other Fees and Mess Fee

• These fees apply to all categories.
• Hostel rent, water, electricity, medical, gym, and other charges: around ?15,000 to ?20,000 per semester (may vary between IITs).
• Mess fee: approximately ?12,000 to ?15,000 per semester.

3. Grand Total (Approximately)

• General: ?1,35,000 per semester.
• OBC: ?1,35,000 per semester.

IIT Delhi is generally considered a better college compared to IIT Roorkee. So, if you go by the rankings, you should definitely choose IIT Delhi. However, Industrial & Production Engineering is a specialized branch that may not be as well-known in India. If you have plans to pursue a master's in industrial engineering from the USA, then this branch could be a good option for you. Ultimately, your decision should consider both the college's reputation and the specific branch you are interested in.

So, I chose to pursue Civil Engineering at IIT Delhi because my family wanted me to, and honestly, it's been a good decision. The curriculum is rigorous, and while some exams are tough, it really prepares us for the industry. The placements are fantastic; around 1000 offers were made last year, and many top companies recruit here. I’ve learned about various industries through internships, which are available from any semester. Plus, the campus life is vibrant with fests like Rendezvous and Tryst. Overall, I’d say it’s worth it!

This was the Semester 1 breakdown of fees for UG students who took admission in 2023–24:

While this includes adjustments for JOSAA counseling fees and some one-time security deposits, it does not cover mess charges. The breakdown for the second semester (General/OBC with Annual Family income > ? 5 Lakh) was as follows:

• ? 1,05,750 for Tuition & Exams
• ? 26,800 for Mess
• ? 13,250 for Hostel accommodation

This brings the grand total to ? 1,45,800!

As you can see, the biggest chunk of fees is, of course, the tuition fee (as visible above).

You don’t need an MTech to work for a company with a production facility (like IOC or any of the pharmaceuticals). If you're not looking for a field job but rather an office or research position, you're likely overqualified for a plant job.

You can end up in a good engineering college…just check the positions available in various employment weeklies. A starting salary of 1–1.2 lacs can be expected just based on the ‘IIT Delhi’ tag.
