Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech Mechanical Engineering

Q
QuirkyQuesadilla Posted On : April 20th, 2026

IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering is a prestigious option with a strong reputation and a high placement rate of around 88%, but the fees are quite steep, making it a heavy financial burden for many. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering offers a dual degree, which can provide better long-term ROI and potentially higher earnings after graduation. While IIT Delhi has a more vibrant campus life and excellent faculty, IIT Kharagpur may offer better value for money due to its dual degree structure and lower fees. If you're looking for a prestigious name and immediate industry exposure, go for IIT Delhi; however, if you want a smarter financial choice with a broader degree scope, IIT Kharagpur would be the better pick.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum that leads to high-paying roles in tech and finance, with internships paying up to 20 lakhs for international offers. The tuition fees are 1,00,000 per semester, but scholarships are available for those with lower family incomes, making it a good investment. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering has a broader focus, but less emphasis on lucrative placements, and specific data on internships and salaries isn't as strong.

For someone who loves math and is aiming for high ROI in tech or finance, IIT Delhi is the smarter choice, while IIT Kharagpur might suit those interested in a wider engineering scope without the same financial pressure.

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering offers strong internship opportunities with companies like Amazon and Google, which can lead to lucrative job placements, especially in AI/ML fields. The rigorous curriculum prepares students well for the tech industry, but the competition is fierce. On the flip side, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering also provides substantial career prospects, especially in niche sectors, though the internship opportunities might not be as extensive or high-profile as those at IIT Delhi.

Given the current trends, if you’re leaning towards a tech-centric career, IIT Delhi is likely the better choice for higher packages and broader opportunities, while IIT Kharagpur would be ideal if you are passionate about aerospace and its applications.

IIT Delhi for B.Tech Electrical Engineering has an impressive faculty and a strong focus on problem-solving, which really prepares you for the industry, while IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech Industrial Engineering might not have the same level of faculty engagement but offers a broader curriculum with various tech company placements. Campus life at IIT Delhi is vibrant with numerous clubs and activities, but if you value a more diverse engineering approach and are open to exploring industrial engineering, IIT Kharagpur could be your pick. Personally, I’d lean towards IIT Delhi for its electrical program and the overall student experience, but if you're keen on industrial engineering and a slightly easier workload, IIT Kharagpur could suit you better.

ElderberryElf Posted On : April 20th, 2026

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Electrical Engineering offers a strong placement record with around 88% students getting placed on-campus, which is impressive. The internship opportunities seem robust too, especially with big names in tech likely to recruit from such a prestigious institution. On the other hand, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering may not have as clear a placement figure, but it does attract companies like Google and Samsung, indicating a solid industry interest. However, IIT Delhi's higher fees could be a concern for some students. Ultimately, if you prioritize better placement prospects and a reputed faculty, IIT Delhi is the way to go. If you're more inclined towards a unique specialization like instrumentation and are okay with a potentially less competitive environment, IIT Kharagpur could be a good fit.

How do the placements really compare between IIT Delhi B.Tech Mathematics and Computing and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Computer Science Engineering?

IIT Delhi.

Reasons include better professors, the calibre of your future batchmates, and placement opportunities. Trust me, many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but they regularly come to IIT Delhi to hire students for internships and placements. There are also more opportunities for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is located in the heart of Delhi (South Delhi, to be precise) and is not far from the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy on weekends.

On the flip side, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus.

I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, but you can rely on them when they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.

Cheers!

Should I go for B.Tech Engineering Physics in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Electrical Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

U
UndefinedEntity Posted On : April 19th, 2026

First of all, IIT Kharagpur is also one of the top IITs, so your question boils down to choosing between the two courses.

Assuming you're a 12th student or have recently passed, here's the breakdown:

1. Engineering Physics:

  • Focuses on the application of physics in engineering.
  • You'll delve into applied areas like condensed matter and electronics.
  • The course is decent for placements (not as strong as B.Tech, but still somewhat good!).
  • Plenty of opportunities for research (especially for PhD).

2. Electrical Engineering:

  • Offers exposure to both theoretical and experimental physics.
  • You won't need to worry about real-world applications; it's about the pursuit of knowledge.
  • This path is interesting for those not overly focused on immediate financial returns (because the initial pay isn't great).
  • Placement opportunities are quite limited in this field, but there are solid chances for research.

Now the choice is yours. Best of luck!
