Which one amongst IIIT Hyderabad and (one of the) IITs should someone choose who wants to study Computer Science ?

AJ
Adinath Jain Posted On : July 28th, 2023
Studied at IIIT Hyderabad

If you want to seriously pursue a career in CS, look no more for IIIT Hyderabad is the best option for you. Despite being young, it is easily comparable to the old IITs and its improving brand value and academic quality has managed to attract the best crowd. Here are a few other aspects that should be considered

  • Coding Culture: The institute has an exceptionally good coding culture that is maintained through frequent internal programming contests. The institute also participates in the ACM-ICPC World Finals every year and has made several achievements.
  • Contributions: IIIT Hyderabad students make a lot of open-source contributions. The increasing number of students who get selected for coding events such as Google Summer of Code, is a testament to the same.
  • Research: IIIT Hyderabad curriculum is designed in such a way that it encourages students to pursue research. Students even at the UG level here can be seen involved in Artificial Intelligence or Advanced Algorithms-based projects and even have publications in the same.
  • Faculty: The most important aspect is the faculty which is again very good in the case of IIIT Hyderabad. Most professors are PhDs from well-reputed colleges in India and abroad. These professors encourage the students to pursue MS and Ph.D. as well as summer internships or projects in overseas universities.
  • Entrepreneurship: IIIT Hyderabad has always promoted the Entrepreneurship culture among its students. Students also excel in diverse fields like finance, consulting, etc. by doing well in exams like CFA, CAT, or GMAT. However, I will say that IITs would provide you with better opportunities in this aspect as of now.

Ultimately, an institute can only guide you but cannot be completely responsible for shaping your career. So choose wisely!

Which one is better: taking mechanical engineering at IIT BHU or civil engineering in IIT Roorkee?

H
Harsh Posted On : July 3rd, 2024
student at IIT Roorkee

I am a B.Tech Civil student at IIT Roorkee. Here’s a comparison between the two options-

Parameters IIT Roorkee Civil IIT BHU Mechanical
Average Package INR 18 LPA INR 21.95 LPA (around 80% students get placed)
Top Recruiters on campus Larsen, Turbo, Tata, Sprinklr, Jio, L&T, Godrej, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Zepto, Google, Jaguar Land Rover. Amazon, American Express, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Google, ITC Ltd., Microsoft, Oracle, Paytm, etc.
Research Facilities One of the best research facilities at the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Roorkee. Ample research opportunities and well-equipped laboratories.

One important thing that my friends told me is that the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT BHU is one of the strictest departments in India. It makes the students question their own potential. The department professors are very strict and the coursework is extremely rigorous. The students are given assignments and projects which they have to complete within a day.

I would suggest you choose IIT Roorkee Civil as it offers the same facilities and placements as IIT BHU Mechanical. Moreover, the Civil department at IITR is not as strict as the Mechanical department at IIT BHU.

Which is better for CSE LPU or Chandigarh University?

SS
Sidharth Singh Posted On : May 4th, 2024
BTech CSE from LPU

The first thing that comes to my mind is the accessibility. Chandigarh University is around 17 kms away from Chandigarh and there are less transportation facilities to commute from Chandigarh to the university. LPU, on the other hand is 19 kms away from Jalandhar, but the campus is established on the main route.

As far as the placement department is concerned, more than 500+ recruiters visit the campus for placements every year. BTech CSE placements at LPU recorded INR 42 lakhs as the highest salary package. Additionally, LPU had 110+ recruiters from top colleges like IITs, IIMs, and NITs. The highest monthly stipend for any kind of internship at LPU is around 80k.

So in my opinion, LPU is better for CSE than Chandigarh University.

Has IIIT Hyderabad CSE grown beyond IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 29th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

When it comes to comparing institutions, rankings and comparisons can be found in various sources, but it's important to be unbiased in your analysis. While I cannot provide a clear answer on which institution is better, I can share my beliefs based on my experiences.

If you're considering IIIT-H, you should know that they offer courses in Computer Science and Electronics only, with Computer Science being their forte. Here's what makes IIIT-H's CS education stand out:

  • Refined Curriculum: IIIT-H focuses on CS fundamentals from the very first year, and the base courses are stressed more than the others. This helps students establish a strong foundation, which allows them to focus on advanced topics in later years.
  • Culture: IIIT-H has a culture of producing great programmers year after year. For instance, a team from IIIT-H qualifies for the ACM ICPC World Finals almost every year. When these programmers are your teaching assistants, lab tutors, or neighbors (IIIT is a small community with around 200 students per year), their success and mindset rub off on you, and you learn how to study and succeed. This is a unique attribute of IIIT-H that sets it apart from other institutions.

In terms of placements, IIIT-H, and IITs are more or less similar. In fact, CS graduates from IITs are also poached by banks and consulting firms due to their strong mathematics and quantitative analysis backgrounds. Faculty members are equally good at both places.

Unlike IIIT-H, IITs offer specializations in various engineering fields, such as Civil and Mechanical engineering. While these fields may be less appealing currently due to their reduced demand in the job market, they are still essential components of the engineering industry. Therefore, it's unfair to say that IIIT-H has grown beyond any IIT in its entirety. But as far as Computer Science is concerned, IIIT-H has carved out its own niche and excels in this field.

How is DTU for ECE?

Atrisa Dutta Posted On : August 14th, 2020

The ECE branch at DTU is very competent. It has a pool of talented, intelligent, and hardworking students. The reason being that the cutoffs for ECE usually are high. DTU ECE students get placed every year in MNCs like Qualcomm, SanDisk, TI, Samsung, and other such reputed firms that hire electronics engineers. A good percentage of the students also pursue an MS from renowned universities across the globe. Students also prepare for competitive exams like CAT, GATE, UPSE CSE, and even succeed in them.

The faculty here is very knowledgeable and teaches lucidly. They are also very lenient in their evaluation.

The curriculum is entirely focused on hardware, communication, computer architecture, advanced integrated circuits, signals and systems, superior probability, networking, and control systems. This is just a broad classification, the actual curriculum is vast, and students can find a lot of interesting sub-fields in electronics. The only drawback of the curriculum is that it does not offer any CSE electives. Assignments are scarce and can be efficiently dealt with as the solutions are readily available from various sources.

The workload is at the bare minimum level. The exams require just a couple of weeks of diligent studying. For the rest of the semester, one is free to explore his/her skills, hobbies, and interests.

75% and above GPA is straightforward to achieve and maintain. Pushing a bit more during the exam period can fetch even 80% and above. This all makes the college life here very exciting and rewarding. To sum up, ECE at DTU is a good option that can be exercised if one compares among the top NITs.

Which Amrita branch is better for CSE, Amritapuri or Coimbatore?

RB
Rupal Bhatt Posted On : May 4th, 2026

Amrita CSE — Amritapuri (Kerala) vs Coimbatore — a question many Amrita applicants struggle with. Here's the honest comparison.

Amrita Coimbatore (main campus, Tamil Nadu):

  • Largest campus, best placement infrastructure. Placement rate CSE: ~78-82%.
  • Average CSE CTC: ~8-10 LPA (2024). Top: ?25-35 LPA.
  • Strong in software companies + semiconductor firms (Qualcomm, TI).
  • Better alumni network in Chennai/Bangalore tech ecosystem.
  • Research: Strong DST/ISRO funded research groups.

Amrita Amritapuri (Kollam, Kerala):

  • Smaller campus, more focused environment. Placement rate: ~70-75%.
  • Average CSE CTC: ~6-8 LPA.
  • Strong in specific niches: Cybersecurity research (Amrita has a well-known cybersecurity lab here), AI research.
  • Campus culture: More serene, spiritually-oriented (main campus of the ashram).
  • Fewer large IT companies visit compared to Coimbatore.

Verdict for CSE specifically:

  • For placement quantity and quality: Coimbatore > Amritapuri — not even close.
  • For research in Cybersecurity/AI: Amritapuri has niche excellence.
  • For campus experience: Both good, Amritapuri more tranquil.

If you're choosing purely for career outcomes: Go to Coimbatore. If you have a specific research interest in cybersecurity and are interested in the research culture: Amritapuri is genuinely excellent for that specific path.
