Are New IIMs (Trichy, Udaipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur, Kashipur) good for MBA in Finance? If not suggest some B-schools. Really interested in investment banking.

Honestly speaking, a career in investment banking should not be considered by the new IIMs. It’s a too ambitious profile to match the relatively new curriculum of these IIMs. Even if you are in a top B School, you will have to remain among the top students to get placed for a front-end role. One can still get roles in corporate & business finance but getting roles in Investment Banking is rather difficult.

Yet if you are not choosing an older IIM and want to choose a newer one, IIM Trichy is the best among them. The order is

IIM Trichy > IIM Udaipur > IIM Ranchi

There are many B Schools apart from IIMs that offer great Investment Banking roles. These include SPJIMR, JBIMS Mumbai, IIFT, and XLRI.

What should I choose between SJMSOM and IIM Lucknow considering that there is a fee waiver for SC students at SJMSOM? My profile is engineering fresher from a non IIT/NIT college with 9/9/8 acads.

Personally, I will recommend you join IIM Lucknow . The reason being your outstanding profile. With such an amazing profile you have multiple chances of getting selected in the top firms in Consulting and Investment Banking areas. Many of these reputed companies do not visit the campus if SJMSOM at all. So you will be losing a lifetime of opportunities.

Also, at the end of the day, IIM Lucknow is a top 4 IIM and its brand name will influence you throughout your life. The fees are not a problem as the majority of the students take educational loans offered at low-interest rates. You can pay it back within 5-7 years with the high paying job you land post-MBA.

Is it possible to get into SPJIMR if there have been backs during graduation?

DT
Deepak Tiwari Posted On : March 6th, 2023

This answer is based on the interview experience of a close friend who had backs during graduation. When enquired about the same, she told them that she has a good percentile despite that. The panelists contradicted her saying the other candidates also have an excellent percentile and academic background. They asked why should a person with a back be preferred over them. My friend told them she even had an extracurricular background and an overall good profile. Yet again the panelists were not convinced. She further said that it was her talent for never giving up that set her apart from others. The panelists told her she couldn’t make it because of her backlog and she easily gave up and left.

The conclusions I drew from this interview were

  • My friend, despite claiming that she never gives up easily, gave up once she was cornered. So don’t give up till the end
  • Prepare a justifiable statement to support your claim and be confident while delivering it
  • Have something exceptional up your sleeve to overshadow the backs in your records
  • Don’t just blabber and sound as genuine as you can.
  • Take up a specific skill and ace it so well that all your past drawbacks can be covered through it.

So it’s eventually your luck and your confidence that will decide if having a back will hinder your path to success or not.

What are my chances of getting into good IIMs, FMS, IIFT, or XLRI with 80% in 10th, 64% in 12th and a 6.2 CGPA in engineering?

AD

Getting admission to top B-schools like the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), or XLRI is highly competitive. While your academic scores may not be the best, it's not impossible to get admission if you perform well in other areas.

Here are some factors that may affect your chances of admission:

  1. CAT/GMAT Score: The Common Admission Test (CAT) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is the first step to get admission to these B-schools. You need to score well in these exams to get shortlisted for the next round of selection.
  2. Work Experience: Many of these B-schools prefer candidates with work experience. If you have relevant work experience, it can improve your chances of getting admission.
  3. Extracurricular Activities: Apart from academics, these B-schools also look for candidates who have participated in extracurricular activities. It shows that you have leadership skills, teamwork abilities, and are a well-rounded individual.
  4. Diversity: B-schools prefer students from diverse backgrounds. If you belong to a minority or have unique experiences, it can work in your favor.

Considering your academic scores, your chances of getting into top B-schools may be lower compared to candidates with higher academic scores. However, this doesn't mean that you should give up on your dream of getting into a top B-school. Here are some tips that can help you improve your chances:

  1. Aim for a high score in CAT/GMAT: Focus on preparing for the entrance exams and aim for a high score. This can compensate for your lower academic scores.
  2. Highlight your work experience: If you have relevant work experience, highlight it in your application. It can show that you have practical knowledge and skills.
  3. Showcase your extracurricular activities: Participate in extracurricular activities and showcase your leadership and teamwork skills in your application.
  4. Prepare well for the interview: If you get shortlisted for the interview round, prepare well for it. Research about the B-school and practice common interview questions.

In conclusion, getting admission to top B-schools is highly competitive, but it's not impossible. With a good CAT/GMAT score, relevant work experience, and extracurricular activities, you can improve your chances of getting admission to top B-schools.

What are the chances of getting into IBS Hyderabad with a 71.1 percentile score after GD PI?

SS
Samar Singh Posted On : February 16th, 2023
B Com from Hansraj College, University of Delhi (Graduated 2017)

Technically speaking, you need at least 87 percentile to make it into IBS Hyderabad. Although I have seen someone get in even with a 76 percentile, you should know that the chances are extremely low. This is because the students who get selected initially sometimes leave after getting offers from other B Schools like Great Lakes, NMIMS or FORE that are more convenient for them. This in turn empties several seats and candidates with a lower percentile who set ISB Hyderabad as the first preference get a chance to get admission. Even if you are unable to make it into Hyderabad, try for the Mumbai campus.

If a person had low marks in 10th and 12th, is he eligible for IIM Ahmedabad?

GK
Gauri Kapoor Posted On : December 30th, 2022
Studied Economics (Hons.) at the University of Delhi (Graduated 2020)

Candidates who are eligible to take the CAT 2022 are also eligible for admission to the IIMs, according to the IIM eligibility criteria 2022. They must, however, meet a few other requirements set by the respective IIMs for the selection process. The following are the CAT eligibility criteria for admission to IIMs:

  • For general category candidates, a minimum of 50% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA in graduation is required (45% for reserved category candidates).
  • Candidates in their final year of undergraduate studies.
  • Candidates must meet the institute's minimum CAT cut-off criteria.

However, older IIMs have their own selection criteria. IIM A focuses on academics, including grades 10, 12, and graduation. IIM B places a high value on work experience. IIM C has the most straightforward selection procedure. Because you received low marks in 10 and 12, you must improve your graduation marks and CAT percentile to secure a call. It may be difficult, but there are always exceptions.

Try to make your profile stand out from the crowd. Just don't limit yourself to IIMs. Other institutes, such as FMS and XLRI, are also excellent.

What are my chances of getting into FMS Delhi or any old IIMs? My academics are 10th/12th/under-grad: 87.3/78.6/75 CAT percentile is 99.78 percentile. Should I expect a call or try other things?

SG
Shantanu Gupta Posted On : May 18th, 2023
Studied at Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi (2020)

You have a high chance of receiving a call from IIM-L and C but negligible chances of receiving a call from the old IIMs, namely A, B, K, and I, given that you are a general engineering male with the academic scores and a 99.78 percentile in the CAT exam.

You should focus on the high chance of converting FMS Delhi, given your strong academic record and impressive CAT percentile.

Factors such as gender and academic background can also play a role in the admission process and the likelihood of receiving a call from certain institutions.
