Should I choose NIT Jamshedpur for a CS/ECE or NIT Allahabad in chemical? Can I go for a branch change next year?

AA
Aarti Ahuja Posted On : September 4th, 2023
Lives in Allahabad

NIT Allahabad is a better choice than NIT Jamshedpur, especially for CSE. If you are not getting CSE, try going for IT because the branches are somewhat similar. Moreover, NIT Allahabad has options for internal sliding too so you can try your luck there. Chances of sliding to CSE are rare so you can try going for IT instead.

Also, If you are considering joining a core branch, except CSE, IT, and ECE, remember that you will have to appear for GATE in the last year to get a job in PSUs.

Particulars

NIT Jamshedpur

NIT Allahabad

Fees

INR 1.88 Lakhs (BTech 1st Year Fees)

INR 84,666 (1st Year Fees)

Ranking by NIRF (BTech)

101 out of 200 colleges in 2023

17 out of 131 in India 2023

Highest CTC

INR 83 LPA

INR 1.35 CPA

Average CTC

INR 15.98 LPA

-

Top Recruiters

Alstom, Tata Motors, Tata Cummins, KPMG, Adobe, etc

Adobe, Country Delight, D.E. Shaw, Cognizant, Ericsson, Maruti Suzuki, etc

From the above table, it can be inferred that NIT Allahabad has better placements and lower fees than NIT Jamshedpur. So it's a better choice than NIT Jamshedpur.

student at Department of Physics , IISER Kolkata

No, you can’t choose Computer Science as a major at IISER Pune or any other IISER. But you can definitely learn basic Computer Programming and techniques. You will have the opportunity to learn various languages and there are also different labs where you can do theoretical and computational work. Course work of many departments depends heavily on computational work at IISERs. But there is no option to take Computer Science as a subject.

You will have to get at least rank 2000 for DTU and 3000 for NSUT Delhi.

Both DTU and NSUT Delhi offer plenty of opportunities for their students in this field.

Qualcomm, SanDisk, Samsung R&D, Mobikwik, Amazon, American Express, Royal Bank of Scotland, Tejas networks, IBM, Amazon, AWS, and Morgan Stanley are some of the MNCs that usually prefer to recruit DTU students. These companies offer a package of around 6-8 LPA. You may also be selected by Google, Microsoft, Apple, Goldman Sachs, Flipkart, Codenation, and Facebook Germany & Ireland.

For placements, DTU is comparable to the top 7 IITs and top 3 NITs. NSUT Delhi is a great college but lags a bit in comparison to DTU in terms of placements. If you are going to study at DTU, choose your specialization according to this preference order- CSE> SWE> ISY. NSUT Delhi offers an M.Tech in CSE, Information Security, and AI.

These are some details about an M.Tech in CSE and related courses at DTU and NSUT Delhi.

In India, there are several institutes for technical education in different levels, from elite to below-average grade, which provides an excellent curriculum in several streams. For Computer Science and Engineering, institutes are divided into six major levels and are listed below.

  • The best institutes in India for CSE are IISc, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras. These provide the best undergraduate engineering courses, and essentially the best jobs in the country.
  • The next level contains the top NITs, along with some IITs, some excellent IIITs, and a few government institutes. The institutes in this level are NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Trichy, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore, BITS, and DTU.
  • NIT Allahabad, NIT Calicut, NSIT, Jadavpur University, JMI, VJIT, COEP, IIT BHU, and VIT are also excellent institutes that provide excellent curriculum and placements for CSE.
  • Next, there are the lower-graded NITs and IITs, and few other renowned institutes. Ex- NIT Bhopal, NIT Rourkela, NIT Durgapur, NIT Jaipur, NIT Nagpur, NIT Surat, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Gandhinagar, BIT Mesra, RVCE, PESIT, BMS, other NITs and IITs, etc.
  • Then, there are some average state engineering colleges and decent-graded private engineering colleges, which are usually good in placement in CSE and IT branches.
  • At last, there are several colleges and universities that provide some placement to CSE students. Ex- LPU, Amity, SRM, Sharda, MODY, Parul, Satyabhama, Acharya, etc.

These are some institutes for CSE which can be considered, depending upon the rank of the candidate and chosen based on preference.

My son got a 2339 rank in the JEE Advanced and 362 in BITSAT. Which should he choose, IIT Bhubaneswar CSE dual degree or BITS Goa CS?

KS
Kalyan Sahu Posted On : June 16th, 2023
Lives in Bhubaneshwar

Among the two options, IIT Bhubaneswar CSE dual degree and BITS Goa CS, the latter seems to be a more promising option. Let me justify my stance in a better way.

The IIT Bhubaneswar dual degree has many flaws like

  • You will be wasting one year of your education during which you could have done your Masters from a more recognized institute and in the branch you like.
  • Deciding to do MTech in a branch you aren’t sure about is risky and you may end up regretting it later. You might want to do MBA and not MTech after your bachelor's but the dual degree restricts

Financially too IIT Bhubaneswar dual degree is a poor decision. You will waste one year earning nothing and be paying extra fees all the more. BITS Goa CS m is better in almost all aspects like its alumni, start-up culture, placements, and campus facilities. So, I will recommend you choose BITS Goa over IIT Bhubaneswar.

Can a non-CS student in NIT Surathkal sit for CSE placement?

DB
Ditsha Banerjee Posted On : September 15th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

There are no specific placements for CSE as it's just one of the many branches of engineering. Most companies like Oracle and Fidelity allow students of all branches to sit for placements while some big companies like Microsoft only allow B.Tech CSE ECE EEE, and M.Tech CSE students who have qualified for the CGPA cutoff 7. Every company has its own CGPA criteria and to stay on the safe side and be eligible for the maximum companies try to score 7+. So if you fulfill the criteria, you can apply for any company irrespective of the branch you are from. For shortlisting, CS companies conduct online coding tests after which you are selected for the interview. So no matter which branch you belong to, you have to be proficient in coding.

In short, if you want to get selected for CSE placement,

  • Maintain a CGPA of more than 8, every semester
  • Actively participate in competitive programming right from the first year.
  • Learn and practice from sites like Geeksforgeeks, and Techdelight.
  • Be proficient in topics like C++, Data structures, and Algorithms to bag offers in big companies.
  • Practice from coding Platforms like CodeChef, and Leetcode.

Basically, the more you become proficient in Competitive Programming, the better offers you will get!
