India’s medical education is set for a major boost as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 6,850 additional MBBS seats for the 2025-26 academic session.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a significant increase in India’s MBBS seats for NEET UG 2025.
With this expansion, the total undergraduate medical intake in the country will rise total MBBS seats in India to 1,23,700 seats, up from 1,17,750 seats in the previous academic year.
This expansion is part of the government’s five-year plan to add nearly 75,000 new UG and PG medical seats across India.
However, around 2,000 UG seats are still pending due to ongoing legal cases, requests for supernumerary allocation, and compliance-related shortfalls.
Impact of NEET-UG 2025 Seats Expansion
The addition of 6,850 MBBS seats is part of the Centre’s wider effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and move closer to the World Health Organization’s recommended doctor-population ratio.
Currently, India has one doctor for every 1,263 people, compared to the WHO standard of one for every 1,000.
The expansion also aligns with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget announcement earlier this year, which set a target of creating about 10,000 new undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats in NEET UG 2025.
However, not all the sanctioned seats will be available immediately. Around 2,000 undergraduate seats have been withheld due to ongoing court cases, requests for supernumerary allocation, and compliance gaps in certain colleges, according to the NMC seat matrix.
Where are the Additional NEET UG 2025 Seats Allocated?
The seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission shows that the new capacity has been distributed across both government and private institutions for NEET UG 2025.
10 newly approved private medical colleges have been allotted a total of 1,200 seats, while 28 existing private colleges together received 1,515 additional seats.
While specific names and details of these institutions are yet to be officially disclosed by the NMC, the expansion reflects a significant step towards meeting the growing demand for medical professionals in India.
On the government side, 13 new medical colleges have been cleared to offer 1,050 seats in the upcoming academic year. Moreover, 32 existing government institutions have been granted 1,080 extra seats, further boosting the availability of total MBBS seats in India.

What does the NEET UG 2025 Seat Increase Mean for Students?
Over 1.23 million candidates qualified NEET-UG 2025 this year. The addition of these seats are expected to ease some of the intense competition for MBBS admissions 2025.
Admission procedures will continue under the standard counselling rounds conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee, and students are advised to keep track of official updates as new seats are released.
Institutions that have been placed on hold must first comply with NMC requirements related to infrastructure, faculty strength, and legal clearances before their seats can be added to the pool.
Meanwhile, aspirants preparing for admission should keep their documents in order, including the NEET UG 2025 rank card, identity proof, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, category or reservation certificates if applicable, and a migration certificate. These will be required during the counselling and admission process once allotments are finalized.
