Mithibai College Removes Entrance Exam for Admission 2024-25, Principal Assures Transparency

New Delhi: Following the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for the academic year 2024-25, SVKM's Mithibai College, located in Vile Parle, has officially declared that no entrance exam will be conducted for degree course admission to the academic year 2024-25.

The official notice released by the college on February 2, 2024, states, "Admission for first-year degree college programs will be based on XII Std. marks only." SVKM's Mithibai College, until last year, used to admit students based on the CUET entrance exam.

The Principal of Mithibai College reassured students that the admission process would be transparent and merit-based. She expressed confidence in an increased number of applications for the upcoming academic year and highlighted the college's commitment to a fair and transparent admission process.

She emphasised, "The entire process is system-driven, ensuring complete transparency. All activities are conducted online, and a merit list is generated based on the provided data. Subsequently, we verify the information provided by applicants. It's important to note that the merit list confirms details and does not guarantee admission; various categories are considered during the admission process."

Students React to the Elimination of Entrance Exam

Furthermore, the Free Press Journal (FPJ) interviewed Class 12 students aspiring to enroll in Mithibai College for their bachelor's courses to gather their perspectives on the decision. The responses of students are as follows:

Parushni Jathar, a Class 12 student at K.C. College (Churchgate) aiming to pursue law, shared her view, stating, "Admissions should be based on Class 12 percentage as not everyone can afford the entrance exam fees, and it is not accessible to everyone in general." She elaborated on the detrimental effects of the competitive exam culture, emphasising the undue stress it places on students.

In contrast, Parth Barhate, a Class 12 student at Pankaj Global Public International (Chopda) aspiring to pursue a science course at SVKM's Mithibai, expressed a different opinion. He believes admitting students solely based on their 12th board exam scores would be unfair, asserting that entrance exams offer a more equitable means of identifying worthy candidates for specific courses.

Additionally, other Mumbai colleges, such as Sophia College for Women (Grant Road), Thakur College of Science and Commerce (Kandivali East), and KES Shroff College (Kandivali West), among others, also confirm admissions based on Class 12 board exam scores for the majority of their courses, according to the FPJ.
