IIT Madras Receives INR 100 Cr Funding for Wadhwani School of Data Science

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has received funding of 100 Cr from Mr. Sunil Wadhwani, Co-founder of IGATE and MasTech Digital. The endowment is designated to establish the Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI, to position the institute among the top 20 AI-focused schools globally.

The MoU was signed between Mr Sunil Wadhwani and the Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti, to signify one of the largest contributions to establishing a school at an educational institute in India. The motive of the newly established school is to concentrate on AI and provide strategic insights to the Government on policy formulation and societal impact.

Director of IIT Madras, Prof. Kamakotim expressed the importance of a dedicated Data Science and AI School, especially during the era of Industry 4.0. Sunil Wadhwani, through the family foundation, Wadhwani Impact Trust has a record of supporting social service and scientific research. 

The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI will offer a range of programs, that include BTech, MTech, MS, and PhD with the University of Birmingham. Admissions are likely to start from July 2024. 

The school’s applied research areas will cover healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, financial analytics, energy, defence, education, manufacturing, and systems biology. The funding not only explains the strong bond between IIT Madras and its alumni but also underscores the potential for global leadership in the field of AI and data science.
