New Delhi: In honour of his generous assistance, the famous main building of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay will henceforth be known as the Nandan Nilekani Main Building. The institute commemorated 65 years of operation on July 27, 2023 by unveiling a plaque with the new name.
IIT Bombay recognised the outstanding mentorship, participation, and contributions of former students and well-wishers who have been crucial to its constant expansion and advancement.
A ceremony was conducted to recognise Nilekani as an alumnus and to thank him for his great mentorship and support of the IIT. Nilekani, a 1973 IIT Bombay B Tech electrical engineering graduate, is the co-founder and chairman of Infosys Technologies Limited as well as the founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India.
Nilekani gave his alma mater Rs 315 crore last month to commemorate his golden jubilee of affiliation with IIT Bombay, making it one of the largest donations ever by an alumnus of an Indian educational institution. The plaque was unveiled in front of Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, the IIT's director, as well as Nilekani, his family, and other dignitaries.
"I am incredibly appreciative of the IIT Bombay board of governors for this great honour. I applaud the contributions of the IIT Bombay team, alumni, and everyone else who has made it possible for me to give back to the institution because IIT Bombay has profoundly influenced my life. I dedicate this accolade to all the students who pass by the famous structure. I wish it would encourage people to envision and create a better future," added Nilekani.
Prof. Chaudhuri, who was speaking at the ceremony, stated, "Our growth is a direct result of the unwavering support and contributions of our alumni, who not only excelled in their various disciplines but also generously gave back to their alma mater.
We are devoted to realising our goal of becoming a world leader in the field of science and technology education. IIT Bombay will successfully reach this milestone with the continued support of our cherished alumni, in my opinion".
