The Health Ministry has provided a comprehensive breakdown of MBBS seats in India's 704 medical colleges, revealing a total of 1,07,948 seats available for aspirants.

New Delhi: In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, revealed that India currently has 704 medical colleges offering a total of 1,07,948 MBBS seats. This represents a remarkable increase of 82% in the number of medical colleges, rising from 387 before 2014 to the current count.
Moreover, there has been a substantial growth of 110% in the number of MBBS seats, increasing from 51,348 before 2014 to the current count of 1,07,948. In addition to this, the number of postgraduate (PG) seats has also seen a significant rise of 117%, going from 31,185 before 2014 to 67,802 at present.
As per the Ministry's data, out of the total 704 medical colleges in India, 379 are government medical colleges, and 315 are private medical colleges. Among the states, Tamil Nadu leads with the highest number of medical colleges, boasting 74 institutions.
Following closely, Karnataka secures the second position with a count of 70 medical colleges in the state. The table below shows the State/ UT with a total number of medical colleges.

The total number of seats available for MBBS Admission in medical colleges across the country is 107,948, with 56,283 seats in Government medical colleges and 51,665 seats in private medical colleges.
