You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Teaching has always been a passion since a very young age, but to teach a professional course like law was not planned. It was my father who guided me into law when I was doing my graduation studies in mathematics, which I discontinued and joined law. After that, there was no turning back and no regret. Since my joining in 2009, Bishop Cotton has become synonymous with ‘home’. My job is challenging because it requires me to shape women from various age groups, strata into the legal arena. The key factor that connects me to the education sector is my passion to be able to contribute, learn, grow, and conquer young minds.

My zeal to translate their interest into facing and overcoming challenges is what sets me apart. This belief translates into the institution that I am the head of. I choose to channel young minds to be more conscious, responsible, and compassionate towards society. Laws are dynamic. To keep up is certainly a challenge, but I am focused on ensuring my students are built to channel their thoughts into research, being proactive as well as reactive, and most importantly, being reasonable, adaptable, and respectful to the legal system that we abide by.

Being the principal of Bishop Cotton Women Christian Law College, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

As a leader, I have always sought to integrate the ideas of my staff for the best results. To be able to decide requires the cooperation of all parties involved. My instruments of change have been my faculty-teaching and non-teaching. I’ve ensured to acknowledge their needs as my own. As a leader, I strive to provide the best opportunities for my staff to push forward and achieve in their domains of interest.

I have focused on Transformational Leadership, which highlights, and underlines delegation, trust, and motivation among employees to ensure success. I encourage my staff to use their potential and creativity to see results and reap harvests. Through participatory leadership, my faculty are allowed to achieve their goals in their own way. However, I ensure effective monitoring of the balance between freedom and accountability. I choose a holistic, character building and progressive approach rather than one of pin-pointing.

How does the curriculum of Bishop Cotton Women Christian Law College ensure the best practice of industry?

The curriculum at Bishop Cottons is unique in itself. Being an all-women’s college, we have always strived for overall growth and excellence. We give equal weightage to curricular and co-curricular activities and also to character building, punctuality, dress code, and self-discipline. I am proud to say that a Law Cottonian is easily identifiable by its approach, confidence, outlook, and demeanor.

What do you think should be the college’s top priority over the next 10 years?

The Bishop Cotton Law College is built to provide legal education for women. One cannot deny the disparity women have faced in their rights and liberties. This college is focused and determined on inculcating legal education and awareness to build and shape women to address and take hold of the competition in the industry, be it litigation, non-litigation, corporate, research, or in society at large. Perhaps most importantly, the institution strives to acknowledge and change discrimination while also still instilling and promoting adapting and asserting one’s rights.

What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?

As a society, we’ve lived through consecutive revolutions and changes, yet the potential of women has always been undermined by most parts of society. I seek to tap the hidden interest of every woman who walks into the portal of this institution. I wish to ensure they themselves tap that energy, rigor, and determination that others seek to undermine. Our institution has produced a large number of achievers. At our college, we want our students to be equipped with self-confidence and to identify their inner potential. I have found this approach has made my students responsible, go-getters, accountable, adaptable, and, more importantly, motivated. Our mission is to bring out the best versions of ourselves in whichever sphere we choose to dive into.

How do you tend to establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

Our institution stands for freedom in action but, at the same time, for responsibility, transparency, and accountability. We create and establish a learning environment. Every relationship here is based on mutual trust, respect, freedom to express ideas, and equality of treatment. As an institution, we have learned to inculcate hard work to achieve success.
