Dr. W.D. Sam Solomon is the Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Analysis at PPG College of Pharmacy in Coimbatore, India. Dr. W.D. Sam Solomon has a Doctorate in Pharmacy, which he pursued as a Full-time QIP Research Scholar from 2005 to 2008. He also holds a Master of Pharmacy degree, which he obtained from the College of Pharmacy, SRIPMS, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, in 1999, and a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, which he obtained from JKKNCP in Komarapalayam, Tamil Nadu, in 1996.

Dr. Solomon has 23 years of professional experience, including 14 years after obtaining his Ph.D. He has worked as a Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Analysis at PPG College of Pharmacy in Coimbatore since June 2021, and he held the same position at RVS College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Coimbatore from July 2008 to June 2021. He pursued his Ph.D. at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, on deputation from July 2005 to July 2008. Before pursuing his Ph.D., he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at RVS College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Coimbatore from December 1999 to June 2005.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

In an academic setting, a leader is one who must direct and motivate the younger generation in the right direction and foster their overall personal and professional growth as well.

What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education in the current era?

The modern world is moving at a rapid pace, and higher education must keep up with these changes. There is a steadily growing demand for critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and adaptability skills. Students in the current era are pressured by increased stress and anxiety, which can take a toll on their well-being. Hence, Institutions face the challenge of aligning their curriculum and programs with the needs of employers and ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the workforce.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth?

Current youth need to understand that learning does not stop with formal education and must be willing to embrace lifelong learning. In addition to academic knowledge, they must focus on developing essential soft skills such as communication, collaboration, adaptability, and leadership, being open to suggestions, and willingness to take risks and learn from failures.

How do you tend to establish a healthy environment in your College?

A healthy environment in a college involves creating a supportive atmosphere that promotes well-being, academic success, and ample opportunities for the personal and professional growth of students. Regular feedback from students, faculty, and staff to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes should become a culture.
