Dr. Tanveer Ikram is the Principal at Comm-it Career Academy. He has done Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from MDU, Rohtak. He has overall 12 years of teaching experience. He has published five research papers till now and a patent registered under his name. He has been working with F Co. Ltd. to provide an online AI application to automatically create designs and relevant text to develop a website for Japanese handicraft items using ChatGPT of similar AI applications. Dr. Tanveer Ikram has also worked in Australia and Malaysia in the IT field for around 10 years.

What inspired you to pursue a career in higher education administration, and what drew you to your current role as a Principal?

I believe that the role of a Principal in a college setting offers a unique opportunity to directly influence the success and well-being of students. Principals hold a pivotal position in shaping a positive school culture, implementing impactful policies, and providing support to teachers in their quest for delivering high-quality education. To shape the educational experiences of students and contribute to their overall growth is my passion. By assuming the responsibilities of a Principal, I can make a lasting impact on the lives of students and create an environment conducive to their development.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing higher education today, and how do you think?

One of the significant challenges in higher education today is the evolving job market and skills gap. As the job market continues to change, there is a growing demand for new skills and competencies. Higher education institutions face the task of aligning their programs and curriculum with these evolving needs to ensure that students graduate with the relevant skills. Bridging the skills gap and equipping graduates with the necessary tools for success in the workforce requires ongoing collaboration with industries and regular updates to the curriculum. Another critical challenge is the accessibility and affordability of higher education. Many individuals face barriers to accessing quality education due to the high cost associated with it. Rising tuition fees, student loan debt, and financial constraints limit the opportunities for equitable access to education. It is imperative to address the issue of affordability and explore ways to make education more accessible to a wider range of students. This may involve implementing financial aid programs scholarships, and grants, and exploring innovative funding models to reduce the financial burden on students and promote inclusivity in higher education.

What do you think sets your institution apart from other colleges and universities and how do you communicate that unique value proportion to students?

Our industry-oriented training sets our institution apart from other colleges and universities. We provide personalized counseling and guidance through one-on-one sessions with prospective students. During these sessions, emphasize the value of industry-oriented training and how it directly aligns with their unique career aspirations. Take the time to address their specific concerns and showcase the individualized support and guidance that our institution offers. By understanding their goals and tailoring the conversation to their needs, we can effectively demonstrate the benefits of our industry-oriented approach and help them make an informed decision about their education.

What are your primary responsibilities as Principal and how do you balance them with other aspects of your job?

As a Principal, the primary responsibilities typically include educational leadership, staff management and development, student support and discipline, administrative duties, and community engagement. Balancing these responsibilities with other aspects of the job can be challenging. I employ several strategies like professional development, delegation, time management, building a supportive team, and effective communication to balance.

How do you approach decision-making in your role and how do you balance the needs of different stakeholders when making difficult decisions?

As a Principal, I approach decision-making thoughtfully and inclusively, considering various perspectives and balancing the needs of stakeholders. I gather relevant information, evaluate options, engage stakeholders, analyze consequences, prioritize students, collaborate in decision-making, communicate effectively, and monitor outcomes. This approach ensures well-informed decisions that prioritize student interests and contribute to the success of the college community.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

I suggest students to explore their passions and interests, embrace a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities, set clear goals and create a plan, seek guidance and support from mentors and professionals, engage in continuous learning beyond the classroom, and balance academics with physical and mental well-being, embrace diversity and promote inclusivity, get involved in extracurricular activities and community service, build a strong professional network, stay resilient and persevere through challenges and make the most of your education and strive to contribute positively to society.

At our institution, we understand the importance of addressing the rising mental health issues and stress among students in India. To provide comprehensive support, we have implemented regular counselling sessions facilitated by qualified psychologists who specialise in student mental health. These dedicated professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively address a range of mental health concerns.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a career in higher education administration and how do you see the field evolving in the years to come?

To pursue a career in higher education administration, consider gaining relevant experience through internships or entry-level positions, and develop a strong educational foundation in fields like education or business administration. Building a network with professionals in the field is crucial, as is staying informed about current trends and honing leadership and communication skills. Embracing technology and its integration into education is vital. As for the future of higher education administration, it will likely involve further technology integration, a focus on student success and outcomes, promoting diversity and inclusion, addressing financial challenges, adapting to changing workforce needs, and utilising data for decision-making.
