Dr. Bhupender Kumar Som is the Director at GIMS. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Kurukshetra University in Stochastic Queuing Systems. His expertise is in the area(s) of statistics, operation research, queuing systems, data analysis, and research methods. Possesses over 20 years of experience in teaching, research, and consulting. He is presently guiding three Ph.D. candidates in the area of stochastic financial models and priority queues. Currently holding the position of Director GNIOT Institute of Management (GIMS).

Throughout your career, you have held important positions in educational institutions. What are the main reasons that keep you connected to the education sector?

I have started my career as lecturer in higher education and eventually I realized that this profession is a perfect blend of nobility and social contribution. The sense of nurturing talent for humanity gives me purpose. The fascinating element of higher education is that you interact with most young minds every year. The dynamics of nurturing diversified talent every year exhilarates the profession further.


What is your leadership style and how has it evolved throughout your career?

My leadership style has always been a blend of participative, democratic and autocratic. I aspire to draw desired results with high efficiency and effectiveness vis-à-vis leading with example. I also believe that dealing with a diversified workforce is one of the biggest challenges for a leader. To lead a diversified workforce, a leader shall develop an acceptable organization culture and train people to follow it religiously. 


In your experience, what are the key factors that contribute to creating a positive and productive work environment.

In my experience appreciation & reward, uniformity in policies, balanced workload distribution, training & development, sublime infrastructure and opportunities of holistic growth create a productive and positive work environment.

What do you consider your roles and responsibilities towards the Institute and Students?

The organization has an established five year plan for achieving certain goals. These goals are driven by raising quality standards in higher education, contribution to the society and, getting higher acclamation. My role is leading the institution to achieve these goals.


As a director, how do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

I believe that self-discipline is the key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Regular exercise, spending time with family & friends even for the smallest window, and keeping the environment of the workplace healthy are components that help me maintain a healthy work life balance.


How do you create a healthy relationship and a positive environment within your institute?

The healthy relationship amongst the employees can be ensured by defining job roles clearly, involving people in decision making, keeping the flow of information transparent as much as possible, making people follow the policy as established, listening to innovative thoughts and having a well laid reward & recognition design. Further, building an ownership work culture proves to be a boon for a healthy and positive work environment at the organization.
