Dr. S Ramkanth has been working as the Professor and Head of Pharmaceutics Department at Karpagam College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He has studied B. Pharm & M. Pharm (Pharmaceutics) at Madurai based KM College of Pharmacy from 2000 to 2004 & 2005 to 2007 respectively followed by PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University - Hyderabad in 2014. Later on, he started his professional journey as an Assistant Professor in 2007 with Annamacharya College of Pharmacy - Andhra Pradesh, where he has been promoted to various positions from Assistant Professor to Professor and at last Head of the Department and worked for a total of 12 years. 

Apart from this, he has contributed immensely in academics, administration, documentation and research domains and has also guided 17 Postgraduate and 13 Undergraduate projects. He has authored 2 book chapters, published 64 research papers in various peer-reviewed indexed national and international journals with the cumulative Impact factor of > 20 and at present has published 3 Indian patents and 1 UK design Patent on his name. Other than this, he has presented his research paper in various conferences which includes three international conferences (2010 @ ICDDT Dubai & 2020 @ IRCPAS Malaysia) and received one best oral presentation award, AICTE - International Travel Grant. 

Being associated with the dynamic world of education, he has organized numerous national and international conferences and also has his contribution as a coordinator in various affiliation and accreditation documentation activities of AICTE, PCI, NBA & NACC. As a Professor, till date he has delivered various guest lectures in 4 International Webinars and also at RGU, Assam, CSIR NEIST, Jorhat, Rathinam Institute of Pharmacy, Nellore, AP, Dr NGP arts and Science College of Coimbatore & one guest lecture at Karpagam Institute of Technology, Coimatore

What latest programs your institute is offering to students to help them outperform?

Our college offers 4-years duration B.Pharm at Undergraduate level, 2-years M.Pharm in specializations like Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology & Pharmaceutical Analysis, 6-years program Pharm.D and 3 years Post Baccalaureate (Pharm D – PB) program at Postgraduate level to students to help them stand apart from the crowd.

And all these programs have great work opportunities in Pharma Industries, Clinicals, Research Institutions as well as in Government Entities. We work dedicatedly to inculcate required skills in students so that they can meet out the challenges during placement and nurture themselves for a successful career.

What are some of the best practices which your institute has adopted for courses they are delivering to students?

We have prioritized providing required practical exposure and awareness to students, and hence we educate them using approaches like Community Based Learning and Practice School. Along with this, hands-on training programs, guest lectures and industry-interaction sessions are regularly held by us in collaboration with leading professionals and leaders. 

Frequent interaction sessions with Alumni to enhance exposure of the outside world for our students also happen from time to time.

On what kinds of projects your students usually work on under their respective Pharmacy programs?

Our students normally work on a wide variety of projects related to different specializations of Pharmacy such as Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Clinical Pharmacology, Biopharmaceutical & Regulatory aspects etc. 

And sometimes they also work on interdisciplinary research projects which ultimately evolve their knowledge and help them to choose a career in a research domain as well as in well reputed Central Government based Research Institutions and Laboratories.

What career options would be available to students after pursuing Pharmacy programs from your institute?

From my professional experience, I can confirm that the field of Pharmacy is one that is constantly evolving and individuals after pursuing a professional Degree in Pharmacy and acquiring required knowledge and abilities can work with renowned industries and organizations in the areas like Production, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Data Management and Research etc.

In addition to this, many of our alumnis’ establish their own Business and become an Entrepreneur.

How does your institute prepare students for the placement and higher education?

We start guiding our students about the available job opportunities and required skills to grab them, right from the first year onwards. And we also provide necessary support to those who are interested in pursuing higher education, by motivating them to appear for the National Level Eligibility Test (GPAT) which will help them to secure their education in top ranked universities and colleges of India. 

Last but not the least, students are encouraged regularly to give exams of IELTS, TOFEL, DHA or MOH etc. so that they can improve their hard and soft communication skills and start their career and higher education abroad smoothly and efficiently.

What inspired you to become a Teacher?

I am passionate about helping students learn and grow, both academically and personally. And as a Teacher, I get direct and countless opportunities to make a positive impact on young people's lives by teaching them important life skills and providing necessary guidance to help them shape their future. Hence I would say that my passion for educating the younger generation and the satisfaction I receive after witnessing them becoming successful made me in the dynamic and challenging world of education.
