Dr. D. Rajkumar is the HOD of Agricultural Engineering, RVS Technical Campus Coimbatore. He holds a BSc. in agriculture and an MSc. in Agricultural Microbiology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. He has also completed his doctorate from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and has more than 13 years of experience in teaching and research. Besides that, he has published 10 international and 9 national research papers in ICAR NAAS-rated journals and UGC Care Journals. He has also published more than 11 books in the field of Bio-energy, Environment Engineering, and Agricultural Microbiology and 30 articles in magazines and journals. Additionally, he has been appointed as Chairman of both the Agriculture and Food Board in Central Valuation by the Controller of Examination, Anna University, Chennai.
What are the insightful facts that your department offers?
The Department of Agricultural Engineering at RVS Technical Campus was established on 29 acres of agricultural land to provide practical knowledge to the students about the latest agricultural technologies and modern agricultural engineering tools and machines. The well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories and learning facilities provide our students with a blend of theoretical knowledge along with hands-on experience.
What are the best practices in the course you’re offering?
Along with the academic curriculum, we are additionally providing value-added courses in fields of agriculture, renewable energy, food process engineering, farm mechanization, and design courses like AutoCAD, Solid Works, etc., to enrich the professional skills of the students. It assists them in noticing issues and providing creative solutions as professionals.
What has your department achieved so far?
The Department of Agricultural Engineering was established in 2014 under the affiliation of Anna University. So far, six batches of our students have completed their degree program with a 100 percent pass percentage. We also secured 18 Anna University rank holders, which includes 3 gold medals. More than 30 students have secured government jobs by clearing competitive examinations, viz., TNPSC, SSC, and IBPS. More than 70% of our graduates have been placed in leading industries, viz., agricultural machinery manufacturing, micro irrigation, renewable energy, food processing, and also in IT sectors.

What do you see as the department’s greatest strengths?
The department houses interdisciplinary faculty members with good expertise and knowledge in the field of agricultural engineering to help the students foster innovation in farming practices and agricultural technologies. The well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories and learning facilities provide our students with a blend of theoretical knowledge along with hands-on experience.
How do you typically establish an industrial collaboration with this program?
The department has signed several MoUs with leading industries in agriculture and allied sectors. The students are encouraged to attend experiential learning to understand industrial trends and managerial skills for professional development. The students are also encouraged to take part in industrial collaboration projects during their studies.
What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing for students?
The department has organized several career guidance programs in respect to higher education, competitive examinations, and opportunities for students in foreign countries. We also train our students to excel in passing TOEFL, GATE, IELTS, and various central and state government examinations. To enrich the practical skills of our students, every Friday of the week is organized as Skill Development Day.
