Dr. Shalini Bhaskar Bajaj is the Director of the Amity School of Engineering and Technology at Amity University Gurgaon. She holds a B.E. in CSE, M.E. in Computer Technology and Applications, and a PhD from IIT Delhi. Besides her regular duties, she has guided over 2 PhD theses, 13 M.Tech. theses, and 107 B.Tech. degree theses. She has worked as Professor at GD Goenka University and ITM University.

Dr. Bajaj regularly organizes and attends workshops and conferences. So far, she has had three patents published and seven filed. With over 98 papers published in journals, she has also written four books and eight book chapters in her area of specialization.

How do you ensure that the student gets holistic exposure and not just academics?

We are committed to providing students with a well-rounded and holistic educational experience that goes beyond academics. To ensure this, we have implemented a comprehensive approach that encompasses various aspects of personal, professional, and character development. We have a wide range of co-curricular activities, including clubs, societies, workshops, seminars, and guest lectures. How do you try to bring in practical approach towards subjects and how students get practical experience from studying the subject?

Bringing a practical approach to subjects and providing students with practical experience is essential for a well-rounded education. We integrate project-based learning into the curriculum, where students work on real-world projects that apply theoretical concepts. We also have partnerships with industries relevant to the subject where we invite industry professionals for guest lectures, workshops, and collaborative projects. We facilitate internships and cooperative education programs that allow students to work in professional settings related to their subject. 

Practical exposure during internships enables students to apply classroom knowledge in real work scenarios. We have developed well-equipped laboratories where students can engage in hands-on experiments, simulations, and practical exercises. We encourage students to undertake independent projects and participate in competitions related to the subject. The college also implements capstone project requirements where students work on comprehensive projects that integrate various aspects of the subject. Moreover, we also organize workshops that focus on developing practical skills relevant to the subject. 

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

The department is dedicated to equipping students with the necessary skills to excel in their academic pursuits and future careers. We regularly organize skill-based workshops that cover a wide range of areas, including communication, time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation skills. We host seminars conducted by industry experts and professionals to provide insights into current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the field. Furthermore, we forge partnerships with industry partners to develop case studies, projects, and collaborative initiatives that mirror real-world challenges. 

We invite guest speakers from academia, industry, and other relevant fields to share their expertise. We provide technical training sessions for software tools, equipment, and technologies commonly used in the field. We also organise networking events and alumni panels where students can connect with professionals, alumni, and potential employers. We offer access to online learning platforms and resources that allow students to acquire additional skills at their own pace.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

Helping students cope with intense competition in the outside world is a crucial aspect of their overall development. At the department level, we implemented a range of supportive measures to prepare students for the challenges they will face. We introduce students to industry trends, emerging technologies, and market demands through seminars, workshops, and guest lectures. We offer comprehensive career counseling services that guide students in setting realistic goals, developing a personalized career roadmap, and identifying areas of specialization. We provide access to skill development resources, online courses, and workshops that enhance students' technical, soft, and transferable skills. We incorporate challenging, real-world projects that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Seek out opportunities for professional development, attend workshops, and explore new areas of interest. Define your short-term and long-term career goals. Having a clear vision of where you want to go will guide your actions and help you make informed decisions about your education, job choices, and skill development.
