Mrs. Gayathree K. is the Head of the Department of Home Science at Besant Women’s College. She did M.Sc. Home Science, Family Resource Management Specialization at Smt. V.H.D. Central Institute of Home Science, Bangalore in 1994. She has worked as a Lecturer at P.A.A.C. College, Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe, Tiptur from 1995 to 1998. She has also been selected as casual compeer for presenting Kannada Yuvani & Krishiranga Programmes at A.I.R., Mangalore. She has also worked as Lecturer at Srinivas College of Hotel Management Mangalore from 1998 to 1999. She has attended workshop and demonstration of arranging flowers with different styles..Gayathree madam is a member of Board of Studies and Board of Exaaminers of Homescience at Mangalore University level and also a Member at Shri Dharmastala Manjunatheshwar college Ujire ( Autonomous)

Ques. What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

Ans. B.Sc Home Science is the latest program we are offering in our college. It helps to prepare the students for a large number of careers & vocations. These careers are exciting, relevant, and much in demand. They help to incorporate personal talent with the knowledge and skills mastered in the study of Home Science.

Ques. What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt for?

Ans. Home Science aims to achieve family happiness and improve economic conditions to develop personally as well as professionally. So we in the B.Sc Home Science stream teach Fundamentals of Textiles & Fashion Design, Food Science & Nutrition, Life Span Development, Interior design &Resource management, and Extension Education & Communication skills.

Ques. What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

Ans. Whatever we teach in theory, will be dealt with in practicals also. That means we are imparting first-hand experience to the students. For example, in Nutrition practicals, students will prepare recipes rich in different nutrients by calculating the nutritive values also (if u have prepared 2 chapatis u will get the knowledge on how much protein, carbohydrates, or fats u are getting).

Ques. What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?

Ans. As we are offering a complete program of Composite B.Sc Homescience, all branches of Homescience are studied in detail, which will help the students to clear the NET (National Eligibility Test) exam also.

Ques. How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

Ans. As our course is imparting knowledge on employability skills, students are ready for employability outside and are ready for self-employment. 

Ques. How did you train yourself/ faculty to deliver this program to the students?

Ans. As we have introduced NEP (New Education policy) we are updating with the knowledge needed for the hour.

Ques. How do you tend to build an industry connection with this program?

Ans. Students have interviews, projects, visits & internships where they have exposure to industries also.

Ques. What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program into your curriculum?

Ans. The tough challenge regarding the word Home Science because people have the mindset that it is only cooking, so it is a big challenge to convince people that Home Science is more than cooking.

Ques. What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

Ans. Recently we have completed projects on ‘Income Generating Activities’. We are going to take up projects on Diet planning & therapy, Counseling, Interiors, Extension Education to the community, etc.

Ques. What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

Ans. I am proud to say that we are the pioneers in starting B.Sc Home Science at Mangalore University. A study of Home Science opens up a large number of employment opportunities and avenues-both by the way of wage employment and self-employment. As Home Science is broad-based in matter and content, so are the employment areas and opportunities in fields like Teaching, Preschool & Creches, Social welfare & Community programs, Interior Decoration, Housekeeping, Textile Designing, Garment Designing, Bakery & Confectionery, Food Preservation & Catering etc.
