Dr. V. Sumathi is the Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Sri Krishna Engineering College. She holds a B.E., M.E. and MISTE. She has an experience of 14 years in the teaching field. His areas of expertise include Power Electronics & Industrial Drives. She has published two books. Published papers in national and international conferences and journals also attended various Workshops/ FDPs.

Being a faculty of the EEE Department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

As a faculty, the first and foremost role is to facilitate the students to understand the concepts of the subjects both theory and practicals. We help in building the overall personality of the students.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?

To inculcate practical experience industrial visits, internships, and guest lectures by technical experts from industries are arranged regularly. Students are encouraged to do projects in industry.


What are the best practices offered by the department to the students that help them gain the necessary skills?

Workshops and hands-on training on the latest technologies, placement, and career development training programs are conducted regularly which helps in almost 95% of placement records. SBI-Societal Beneficial Innovation is a scheme through which the students are encouraged to develop innovative products which is beneficial to society which in turn helps the students to gain product design and development skills.


What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department? How does your department prepare students for higher education?

Career development programs are conducted to develop both soft skills and technical skills. Interactive sessions are conducted to expose the opportunities for higher education to the students.


How do you help your student cope with high competition in the outside world?

Students are regularly mentored by their respective staff members and motivated to perform better in both academic and co-curricular activities. Students are exposed to periodical motivational lectures by experts.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the students’ skills or expose them to real-world challenges?

Symposiums, sports, cultural, yoga-meditation, and motivational programs, doctor's talks are arranged periodically to make the students equipped to face real-world challenges.


How does the department/ college/University enhance the skills of the faculty and prepare them according to the industry standards?

Faculty members take part in collaborative activities with MoU-signed industries and consultancy projects which helps them enhance their skills to the industry standards.


What interventions and approaches do you bring in apart from the curriculum to train/ teach the students?

A special program E-cube (Enrichment, Enhancement, and Empowerment) is conducted every year by all the departments and even the slow learners are motivated to present technical papers that pave the way for them to exhibit their talents. E-cube is a platform that enhances the confidence level of the students and their presentation skills. A unique initiative Societal Beneficial Innovation (SBI) organized by the Institution provided an opportunity for the students to develop innovative projects addressing societal problems. The objective of this initiative is to distribute the products developed under this scheme, to the beneficiaries.


What do you see as the department’s/ college’s greatest strengths and how can they be enhanced?

What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education in your department? 

The lack of interest in students towards studies post-pandemic. The reduced level of concentration because of gadget usage is the biggest challenge faced by the faculty in recent years.
