Can you provide a brief overview of the current state and activities of the CSEDS department?

In our institute’s emerging technology clubs, the Center for Engineering Educational Development, Center for Innovations in Science and Technology, Department of Student Affairs, and Training and Placement Cell play a prominent role in the holistic development of students. For the CSE-DS Department, the Data Science Club is the emerging technology club that conducts activities to meet these requirements and makes students industry-ready.

How does the department ensure the relevance of its academic programs in the rapidly evolving fields of Computer Science & Engineering - Data Science?

The department has well-equipped specialized laboratory facilities like Data Science, Programming with Objects, Database Management Systems, Web Application Development, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Data Visualization Techniques, Introduction to Data Science, Natural Language Processing, Big Data and Analytics etc. The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide good practical learning and an innovative environment for the students and researchers.

What initiatives are in place to promote research and innovation within the CSE-DS department?

As teachers, we can make a positive impact on communities by collaborating with them. We can contribute to designing and developing sustainable software products, solutions and interfaces, protecting environmental resources, and improving the quality of life for millions of people. This reason can make it a very fulfilling job for an academician and a researcher. This career will not only allow me to do individual research but will also help me build skills through presentations and the sharing of innovative ideas.

What are the current challenges faced by the CSEDS department, if any?

The challenges facing CSE-DS in the current scenario include incorporating emerging technologies into the curriculum to upgrade and provide suitable solutions to the society in design of interfaces and finding solutions to meet society’s needs. Our department is continuously working to overcome these challenges by conducting certificate courses/trainings and motivating students to take up innovative projects addressing sustainability issues. We also have industrial visits, which are done to provide students with practical exposure as well as to learn to work in a team.

How does the department engage with industries to ensure that its curriculum aligns with industry needs?

Our department’s curriculum has been designed based on considerations from advancements in the field of CSE-DS and various parameters that uplift our students’ capabilities to meet current trends. We do so through our modern and well-equipped labs and by working on innovative projects. The curriculum has been designed based on Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University’s curriculum as a reference and the university regularly updates its regulations to meet current societal needs. Further adding to that, external members, including industry personnel and alumni of our department participate in the Board of Studies (BoS) meetings and guide us in framing our curriculum.

How does the CSE-DS department support student learning and engagement both inside and outside the classroom?

We have professional body memberships with different professional societies like CSI, and IEEE. Student chapters are also a recent highlight. Well-equipped labs and regular maintenance of labs enhanced the learning experience for students. A total of four academic labs are utilized for curriculum out of which two are considered as project laboratories/ research laboratories, for working on their prototypes, innovations, mini and major projects. The department supports the student's participation in and outside of the classroom environment in the institute by providing guidance, and other requirements whenever they require it.

What opportunities are provided for faculty members in the CSE-DS department to enhance their professional development?

Our faculty members are regularly motivated for their personal development, both in terms of research and higher studies. We also encourage them to attend faculty development programs organized by ATAL and premier institutions, short-term training programmes, and research development programmes organized by the Center for Research Innovation and Development. Our teachers also attend workshops organized by premier institutions and are provided with duty leave for all their developmental activities. We also have a well-designed and structured appraisal system that keeps faculty retained for a long time.

How does the CSE-DS department collect feedback from students, faculty, and other stakeholders?

CSE-DS collects feedback from the stakeholders by sending them a questionnaire in the form of a Google form. The data from the filled out questionnaires will be collected and analyzed. The data is then used to draw valid conclusions, make decisions according to our needs and implement them.

Are there any upcoming initiatives, projects, or changes in the CSE-DS department that you would like to highlight?

The department has MOUs through which regular activities are conducted for the betterment of students and faculties. Industry interaction, industry visits, guest lectures, workshops, and seminars are regularly conducted for the enhancement of the department with industry collaborations. We are planning to bring consultancy and collaborative innovation to near premier institutions by identifying the potential research areas to apply to funding projects and consultancy.

What is your vision for the future development of the CSE-DS department?

Our vision is to be recognized as a department of excellence by stimulating a learning environment in which students and faculty will thrive and grow to achieve their professional, institutional, and societal goals. Our plan to achieve it is through our mission to integrate innovative teaching and learning practices that will enable students to build technical competence for working in Computer Science and Engineering-Data Science, Deep Learning, AI and ML, AWS, and Cyber Security. We also aim to encourage innovation, research, and entrepreneurship among faculty and students that will lead to sustainable development. Additionally, we aspire to become self-sustainable through strategic collaborations with industries and nearby communities focused on consultancy services.
