What is NIMCET 2026?
NIMCET stands for NIT MCA Common Entrance Test. It is a national-level entrance exam for admission to the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme at National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) across India. NIT Tiruchirappalli conducts NIMCET 2026 on behalf of all participating institutes.
NIMCET is one of the most competitive MCA entrance exams in the country. Around 25,000 to 50,000 candidates register for it every year to compete for approximately 1,300 MCA seats spread across 11 NITs and 2 IIITs. The exam tests candidates on Mathematics, Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning, Computer Awareness, and General English.
NIMCET 2026 is held in online mode (Computer-Based Test) across 21 cities in India. It is conducted once a year, and admission is fully merit-based using NIMCET ranks. There is no separate institute-level entrance test for any participating NIT or IIIT — a single NIMCET rank covers all of them.

NIMCET 2026 Exam Pattern
The NIMCET 2026 exam has 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for a total of 1,000 marks. The exam duration is 2 hours (120 minutes). It is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode in English only. There is negative marking — you lose marks for every wrong answer.
NIMCET 2026 Section-wise Exam Pattern
| Subject | No. of Questions | Marks per Correct Answer | Negative Marking (Wrong Answer) | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50 | +12 | -3 | 600 |
| Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning | 40 | +6 | -1.5 | 240 |
| Computer Awareness | 20 | +6 | -1.5 | 120 |
| General English | 10 | +4 | -1 | 40 |
| Total | 120 | — | — | 1,000 |
Key Points About NIMCET 2026 Marking Scheme
- Mathematics carries 60% of the total marks. This is the most important section and should get the most of your preparation time
- No marks are deducted for unattempted questions
- Selecting more than one option in a question is treated as a wrong answer and attracts negative marking
- The exam is only in English — there is no option for Hindi or any regional language
- No sectional time limit — you can move between sections freely within the 2-hour window
- Rough sheets will be provided at the exam centre. You cannot bring your own
Mathematics carries the highest marks (600 out of 1,000). Even one extra correct answer in Mathematics (worth +12) is equivalent to correctly answering two full questions in Analytical Ability or Computer Awareness.

NIMCET 2026 Preparation Tips
If you are going to appear for NIMCET 2026 on June 6, 2026, here are the most important preparation strategies to maximise your score in the time remaining.
Focus on Mathematics First
Mathematics carries 600 out of 1,000 marks — that is 60% of the total score. Even a few extra correct answers in Mathematics can move your rank significantly. In the remaining days before the exam, revise Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Probability, and Algebra — these are the highest-weightage topics.
Do Not Skip Computer Awareness
Computer Awareness has only 20 questions but carries 120 marks. The per-question mark (+6) is higher than General English (+4). The revised 2026 syllabus focuses on computer basics, data representation, and internet fundamentals — not advanced programming. This makes it easier to score well with focused revision.
Attempt Analytical Ability Strategically
Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning has 40 questions worth 240 marks. With 1.5 marks negative per wrong answer, do not guess randomly. Attempt questions you are confident about first. Blood relations, Coding-Decoding, and Data Interpretation tend to be more predictable in NIMCET.
Do Not Ignore General English
General English has only 10 questions worth 40 marks, but these are easy marks if you spend even 15–20 minutes daily on vocabulary and grammar. Every question you get right in English is worth the same as one question in Reasoning — do not let them go to waste.

Last-Week Strategy Before NIMCET 2026
- Solve at least 2 full mock tests daily and analyse every mistake
- Revise high-weightage Mathematics formulas — Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Probability
- Do a quick revision of the Computer Awareness 2026 revised syllabus topics
- In the exam, attempt Mathematics first while your mind is fresh
- Avoid attempting questions you are unsure about — negative marking can significantly lower your score
- Do not introduce new topics in the last 2–3 days. Revise what you already know

B.Sc Nursing cannot be done based on NIMCET. NIMCET (NIT MCA Common Entrance Test) is only for admission to MCA (Master of Computer Applications) programs offered by NITs. It has no link with B.Sc Nursing admissions. For B.Sc Nursing, admissions are based on:
You can download the official NIMCET sample or previous-year question papers from its official website: nimcet.admissions.nic.in. You can visit the site, locate the “Downloads” or “Previous Papers / Sample Papers” section, and download the PDF.
The Mathematics section of the NIMCET exam tests core mathematical concepts needed for MCA admissions. It includes topics such as sets, relations, functions, algebra, logarithms, quadratic equations, matrices, determinants, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, vectors, limits, continuity, differentiation, and integration. You also get questions on probability, statistics, permutations and combinations. This section carries the highest weightage, so strong accuracy and speed are essential. Mastering fundamental formulas and practicing previous papers greatly improves performance in the Mathematics section
