NID DAT 2026 (National Institute of Design Design Aptitude Test) is the national entrance exam conducted by NID Ahmedabad for admission to B.Des and M.Des programmes across seven NID campuses in India. The exam was held in two stages — Prelims on December 21, 2025 and Mains in April–May 2026. The B.Des Mains final result has been declared on May 26, 2026, and selected candidates face an urgent deadline of May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM to upload documents and submit campus preferences on the official portal.
- Document Submission Deadline: B.Des selected candidates must upload required documents and submit their final institute preference list on the NID admissions portal by May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM. This deadline is just one day away. Candidates who miss it will be excluded from all seat allotment rounds. In the 2025–26 cycle, about 630–650 candidates were shortlisted for the Mains stage.
- Round 1 Seat Allotment: NID DAT 2026 Round 1 seat allotment and token fee payment window is expected between June 9–11, 2026. Only candidates who complete document submission by May 31 will be considered for allotment across approximately 425 B.Des seats in five NID campuses.
- Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters: B.Des Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters are expected on June 16–18, 2026. For M.Des, Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters have already been released. Multiple further allotment rounds are expected beyond Round 1.
- Appearing Candidates — Class 12 Marksheet: B.Des candidates currently appearing in Class 12 who receive provisional admission must submit their final Class 12 marksheet by July 15, 2026. Failure to submit a passing certificate by this date will cancel provisional admission. Last year, the same deadline applied to all appearing candidates.
What is NID DAT 2026?
NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test) is the national entrance exam conducted by the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad for admission to its Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programmes. NID was established in 1961 in Ahmedabad and is one of India’s most prestigious design institutions, recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
The exam selects students through a two-stage process — a qualifying Prelims and a studio-based Mains. More than 15,000 candidates applied for B.Des and around 7,000 for M.Des in the 2025–26 cycle. Against this, only about 425 B.Des seats and around 402 M.Des seats are available across seven NID campuses in India. This makes NID DAT one of the most competitive design entrance exams in the country.
For NID DAT 2026, the Prelims was held on December 21, 2025 and the Mains was completed between April and May 2026. The B.Des final Mains result has been declared on May 26, 2026, and the counselling process is now underway.

NID DAT 2026 Application Process
The NID DAT 2026 application window closed on December 1, 2025 and is no longer active. If you are planning for NID DAT 2027, here is how the registration process works. All steps are completed online on the official admissions portal at admissions.nid.edu.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
- Step 1 — Register on the Portal: Visit admissions.nid.edu and create a new account with your email ID and mobile number. You will receive a verification link on your email.
- Step 2 — Fill the Application Form: Log in and fill in your personal details, educational qualifications, programme choice (B.Des or M.Des), and discipline preference. For M.Des, you can choose one or two disciplines.
- Step 3 — Upload Documents: Upload a scanned passport-size photograph, your signature, and your Class 12 or graduation marksheet as applicable. Photos must meet the official size and format specifications.
- Step 4 — Choose Exam City: Select your preferred city for the Prelims exam. Availability depends on city slots at the time of application.
- Step 5 — Pay the Application Fee: Pay online via net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI. The fee is non-refundable in all cases.
- Step 6 — Submit and Download Confirmation: Review all details carefully and submit the form. Download and save the application confirmation page as proof.
NID allows a limited editing window after the application deadline. For NID DAT 2026, this window was open from December 2–4, 2025. During the editing window, certain fields can be changed but the programme choice and discipline cannot be changed.
NID DAT 2026 registration is now closed. Applications for NID DAT 2027 are expected to open around September–October 2026 on admissions.nid.edu.
How Many Students Applied for NID DAT 2026?
In the 2025–26 admission cycle, more than 15,000 candidates applied for B.Des and around 6,900 applied for M.Des — a combined total of nearly 22,000 applications. The confirmed turnout for the Prelims was 15,269 for B.Des and 6,612 for M.Des.
| Programme | Applications Received | Appeared in Prelims | Shortlisted for Mains (approx.) | Available Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Des | 15,839 | 15,269 | ~650 | ~425 |
| M.Des | 6,897 | 6,612 | ~1,328 | ~402 |
For every B.Des seat, roughly 35 candidates appear in the Prelims. The Prelims shortlist (about 1.5 times seats per category) brings this down further before the Mains stage determines final admissions.

NID DAT 2026 Exam Pattern
NID DAT 2026 follows a two-stage selection process — a qualifying Prelims and a studio-based Mains. Your final merit rank is based entirely on your Mains score. There is no negative marking in either stage.
From 2026 onwards, Prelims marks carry zero weight in the final merit list. The Prelims only decides who qualifies for the Mains. Your admission rank is determined solely by Mains performance.
Stage 1: NID DAT Prelims Pattern
The Prelims is a pen-and-paper test held across multiple cities in India. It screens candidates for Mains. Approximately 1.5 times the available seats per category are shortlisted for Mains based on Prelims merit.
| Feature | B.Des Prelims | M.Des Prelims (1 Discipline) | M.Des Prelims (2 Disciplines) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mode | Offline (pen-and-paper) | Offline (pen-and-paper) | Offline (pen-and-paper) |
| Duration | 3 hours | 2.5 hours | 4.5 hours |
| Total Marks | 100 | 100 | 100 per discipline |
| Part I (MCQ) | ~22 MCQs — General Aptitude Test (GAT) | ~59 MCQs | ~59 MCQs per discipline |
| Part II (Subjective) | ~4 questions — Creative Ability Test (CAT) | ~3 subjective | ~3 subjective per discipline |
| Negative Marking | No | No | No |
| Weight in Final Merit | Zero (qualifying only) | Zero (qualifying only) | Zero (qualifying only) |
In the B.Des Prelims, Part I (GAT) carries approximately 30 marks and Part II (CAT) carries approximately 70 marks. The CAT is the more critical part — it tests drawing, creativity, and design thinking.
Stage 2: NID DAT Mains Pattern
The Mains has two mandatory tests for B.Des candidates. Missing either test disqualifies you from further admission rounds. Your final rank is based on combined Mains performance (60% Test I + 40% Test II).
| Feature | B.Des Mains | M.Des Mains |
|---|---|---|
| Test I — Studio Sensitivity Test | 60% weight | April 19, 2026 | Bengaluru | 60% weight | April 19, 2026 |
| Test II — In-Person Sensitivity Test | 40% weight | May 11–17, 2026 | 40% weight | Includes portfolio, SOP & interview |
| Total Marks | 100 (both tests combined) | 100 (both tests combined) |
| Mode | Offline (studio-based) | Offline (studio-based) |
| Duration (Test I) | 3 hours | 3 hours |
- B.Des Test I (Studio Sensitivity): Includes model-making with wire, clay, and paper; doodling exercises; observational drawing tasks; and a theme poster activity.
- B.Des Test II (In-Person Sensitivity): A studio evaluation at NID campuses in small batches. It tests creative sensitivity, design problem-solving, and communication ability.
- M.Des Mains: Includes the studio test plus a portfolio submission, a Statement of Purpose (maximum 300 words), and a personal interview focused on design background and creative process.
NID DAT 2026 Syllabus
The NID DAT syllabus tests creative aptitude and design thinking — not academic subject knowledge. There is no fixed subject like Physics or Chemistry. The focus is on observation, creativity, logical thinking, and visual reasoning.

NID DAT Prelims Syllabus — M.Des
The M.Des Prelims has a Common Design Aptitude Test (CDAT) followed by a Discipline-Specific Test for the chosen specialization. The CDAT covers similar topics as the B.Des CAT but with greater depth in design theory, analysis, and domain-specific application.
NID DAT Mains — What Gets Evaluated
The Mains is a practical evaluation. There is no fixed syllabus to study. You will be assessed on:
- Model Making: Constructing 3D models with wire, clay, paper, and other materials under a time limit
- Drawing and Sketching: Developing ideas through hand drawings, quick sketches, and creative doodles
- Observational Tasks: Responding to visual or audio-visual stimuli; evaluating sensory awareness and sensitivity
- Creative Sensitivity: Originality, empathy, and innovative thinking in response to design problems
- M.Des Portfolio: A curated collection of your best creative work — drawings, projects, research, and case studies
- M.Des Interview: Discussion on your Statement of Purpose, design background, and creative thinking process
NID evaluates natural creative ability, not textbook knowledge. Consistent practice with observational drawing, hand modelling, and design thinking is the best preparation.

NID DAT 2026 Document Submission — Urgent Deadline: May 31
The document submission phase is the most critical step for B.Des selected candidates right now. You must upload all required documents AND submit your final campus/programme preference order on the NID admissions portal by May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM.
This deadline is tomorrow — May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Candidates who miss this deadline will be excluded from Round 1 seat allotment and all subsequent allotment rounds. There is no grace period.
Action required: Upload documents + Submit campus preferences on admissions.nid.edu before May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM.
Documents Required for NID DAT 2026 B.Des Admission
- Class 12 Marksheet: Scanned copy of the original marksheet. For appearing candidates (currently in Class 12), a school/board provisional certificate is acceptable now; the final marksheet must be submitted by July 15, 2026.
- Class 10 Certificate: For age proof — scanned copy of your Class 10 board certificate or birth certificate.
- Category Certificate: If you belong to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, or PwD categories, upload a valid certificate issued by a competent authority.
- Passport-size Photograph: A recent photograph meeting NID’s photo specifications.
- Signature: Scanned copy of your signature in the prescribed format.
How to Submit Documents and Campus Preferences
- Log in to admissions.nid.edu with your credentials.
- Navigate to the Document Upload section. Upload each document in the specified format (PDF or JPEG, within the file size limit).
- Go to the Preference Submission section. Arrange your preferred NID campuses and programmes in your order of priority from first to last.
- You can edit and re-submit your preferences multiple times before the May 31 deadline. The last saved version at the cutoff time is used for allotment.
- After final submission, download the confirmation page as proof.
The campus preference order you submit is locked after May 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Seats are allotted based on your merit rank and the preference order you submit — so choose carefully. Higher-ranked campuses (like NID Ahmedabad) will fill up first.
NID DAT 2026 Cutoff and Merit List
NID does not publish a fixed cutoff score. Instead, your final merit rank (based entirely on Mains performance) determines whether you receive a seat. The effective "cutoff" is the rank of the last candidate admitted in each category and campus — this becomes clear only after all allotment rounds are over.
For NID DAT 2026, the B.Des final merit list was declared on May 26, 2026. The actual closing ranks for each campus and discipline will be known by mid-July 2026, after all allotment rounds are complete.
How the NID DAT 2026 Merit List Works
- Final rank = Mains Test I score (60%) + Mains Test II score (40%)
- Prelims marks carry zero weight
- B.Des Mains shortlisted approximately 630–650 candidates for ~425 seats
- Seats are allotted by merit rank, category reservation, and campus preference order
- Multiple allotment rounds ensure that seats vacated after Round 1 go to the next eligible candidate
NID DAT Previous Year Indicative Closing Ranks (B.Des)

B.Des Counselling Schedule 2026
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Document Upload + Campus Preference Submission Deadline | May 31, 2026 (11:59 PM) |
| Round 1 Seat Allotment + Token Fee Payment Window | June 9–11, 2026 |
| Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters Issued | June 16–18, 2026 |
| Further Allotment Rounds | Dates to be announced on admissions.nid.edu |
How the NID Seat Allotment Process Works
- Step 1 — Document and Preference Submission: Upload all documents and submit your campus preference list by May 31, 2026 (11:59 PM). This is the mandatory prerequisite for Round 1 allotment.
- Step 2 — Round 1 Allotment: NID processes allotments on June 9–11, 2026 based on merit rank, category, and preference order. The result is declared on the portal.
- Step 3 — Token Fee Payment: If you receive a seat in Round 1, pay the non-refundable token fee within the June 9–11, 2026 window to secure your seat. Failing to pay cancels your allotment.
- Step 4 — Offer Letter: After token fee payment, Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters are issued on June 16–18, 2026.
- Step 5 — Further Rounds: Vacated seats go to the next eligible candidate in subsequent rounds. Dates for these rounds will be announced on admissions.nid.edu.
For M.Des, Round 1 Provisional Offer Letters have already been released. M.Des candidates should check the portal for acceptance deadlines and fee payment instructions for their specific allotment.
If you receive a seat but do not pay the token fee within the specified window, your seat is cancelled and reallocated. There is no exception to this rule.

NID DAT 2026 Preparation Tips
If you are preparing for NID DAT 2027, here are practical tips to build genuine design aptitude. NID evaluates natural creative ability — you cannot mug up answers, but you can train your creative eye and problem-solving skills over time. More than 15,000 candidates appear for about 425 B.Des seats each year, so consistent long-term preparation matters more than last-minute cramming.
For the Prelims (GAT + CAT)
- Practice Observation Drawing Every Day: Draw objects from memory — kitchen items, vehicles, people. CAT questions often ask you to recall and represent visual information accurately and quickly.
- Solve Previous Year Papers: NID releases past Prelims papers on its website. Solving these gives you a direct idea of question format, types of creative tasks, and time management needed.
- Strengthen Logical Reasoning: The GAT section tests spatial reasoning, mirror images, series, and paper folding. Standard aptitude books cover all of this — you do not need coaching for the GAT alone.
- Read Widely for General Knowledge: Focus on design history, architecture, art movements, Indian crafts, and current affairs. These appear regularly in GAT questions.
- Improve Your Colour Sense: Study colour theory — complementary colours, warm and cool tones, colour psychology. Colour-based questions appear in both the Prelims CAT and the Mains.
For the Mains (Studio Tests)
- Work with Your Hands Regularly: Practice building 3D models with wire, paper, and clay at home. Mains Test I involves model-making under a strict time limit. Speed and neatness are both evaluated.
- Think in Process, Not Just Output: NID Mains does not have a single "right answer." Evaluators want to see how you think — show your ideation, exploration, and decision-making, not just the final result.
- Build a Portfolio Early (M.Des): Start documenting your design projects, sketches, research, and creative work from your first year of college. A strong, process-driven portfolio makes a significant difference in M.Des Mains.
- Practice Rapid Ideation: Set a timer for five minutes and generate as many ideas as possible for a single design problem. NID values breadth of thinking along with depth of execution.
- Visit Design Exhibitions and Craft Fairs: Exposure to real-world design — furniture fairs, craft markets, art exhibitions — sharpens visual sensitivity, which is the core skill NID tests in both Prelims and Mains.

Ques. What is the NID DAT 2026 exam pattern?
Ans. NID DAT 2026 has two stages. The Prelims is an offline exam with a General Aptitude Test (GAT — MCQs) and Creative Ability Test (CAT — subjective/drawing questions) for B.Des. The Mains has two tests — Studio Sensitivity Test (60% weight, April 19, 2026) and In-Person Sensitivity Test (40% weight, May 11–17, 2026). There is no negative marking. From 2026, Prelims marks carry zero weight in the final merit list.
Ques. What are the eligibility criteria for NID DAT 2026 B.Des?
Ans. For B.Des, you need to have passed Class 12 (any stream) from any recognized board. The age limit for General and EWS candidates is born on or after July 1, 2005. Candidates currently appearing in Class 12 are also eligible.

Ques. What documents do I need to submit for NID DAT 2026 B.Des admission?
Ans. For NID DAT 2026 B.Des document submission (deadline: May 31, 2026), you need your Class 12 marksheet (or a provisional certificate if you are an appearing candidate), Class 10 certificate for age proof, a category certificate if applicable (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwD), a recent passport-size photograph, and your signature. All documents must be uploaded on admissions.nid.edu in the prescribed format and file size before 11:59 PM on May 31, 2026.
Ques. What is the difference between NID DAT Prelims and Mains?
Ans. The NID DAT Prelims is a written qualifying test held at centres across India. It shortlists candidates (about 1.5 times the available seats per category) for the Mains. From 2026, Prelims marks carry zero weight in the final merit rank — they only determine who gets to appear for Mains. The Mains is a studio-based creative evaluation at NID campuses where your actual design ability, model-making skills, and creative sensitivity are assessed. Your final admission rank is based entirely on Mains performance.
Ques. When will NID DAT 2027 applications open?
Ans. NID DAT 2027 applications are expected to open in September–October 2026, based on the previous admission cycle pattern. The NID DAT 2026 application window opened on September 11, 2025. You should monitor admissions.nid.edu from September 2026 for the official notification and application link.
