IIFT 2026 admissions are based on CAT 2025 scores, with the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade managing its own shortlisting, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview process. The institute, established in 1963 under India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has released the final merit list for the MBA International Business (IB) and MBA Business Analytics (BA) 2026-28 batch in June 2026, and waitlist movement is ongoing. Candidates interested in the MBA (IB) for Working Professionals programme still have a last opportunity: the application window for the 2026-29 batch closes on 1 July 2026, after a deadline extension announced on 25 June 2026.

  • Working Professionals MBA (IB) — Final Deadline Tomorrow: The IIFT MBA (IB) for Working Professionals 2026-29 batch application closes on 1 July 2026 after an extension announced on 25 June 2026. The two-year online programme carries a total fee of INR 10.50 Lakhs and requires a minimum of one year of work experience. No CAT score is needed. Apply on the official IIFT portal before midnight tonight.
  • IIFT 2026-28 Waitlist Movement: The IIFT 2026 final merit list for MBA IB and MBA BA was released in June 2026. Waitlist movement is ongoing across all four campuses — Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada, and GIFT City. In the 2025 cycle, IIFT ran three rounds of waitlist movement. Waitlisted candidates should monitor iift.ac.in daily and be ready to respond within 24-48 hours when an offer is made.
  • CAT 2026 for IIFT 2027-29 Batch: Students targeting IIFT MBA 2027-29 must register for CAT 2026. The CAT 2026 notification is expected in August 2026 — last year, CAT 2025 registration opened on 31 July 2025. The exam will be held in November 2026. General category students should target 99+ overall percentile to be competitive for IIFT Delhi.
  • IIFT MBA 2027-29 Applications: The registration window for the next IIFT MBA cycle is expected to open in October 2026, following last year’s schedule when the 2026-28 batch applications opened on 17 October 2025. Candidates must have a valid CAT 2026 score and at least 50% marks in graduation.

What is IIFT?

IIFT stands for Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. It is India’s premier management institute for international business and trade, established in 1963 by the Government of India. The institute operates as a Deemed University under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and has been training leaders in global trade, export management, international finance, and supply chain strategy for over six decades. IIFT holds NAAC A+ accreditation and AACSB international accreditation.

IIFT’s flagship programme is the two-year full-time MBA in International Business (MBA IB). It also offers an MBA in Business Analytics (MBA BA) at its Delhi campus, an MA in Economics, a Ph.D. programme, and an Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) at Kakinada. Starting from the 2024 admission cycle, IIFT discontinued its own entrance exam and now uses CAT scores for shortlisting — which means one CAT attempt qualifies you for both IIMs and IIFT.

IIFT operates four campuses: New Delhi, Kolkata, Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and GIFT City (Gujarat). The MBA IB programme covers international trade policy, foreign exchange management, WTO law, global supply chain, export-import regulation, and emerging market strategies — a specialisation that sets IIFT apart from general management schools. IIFT consistently ranks in the NIRF top 20 for management institutions.

IIFT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

The IIFT MBA 2026 eligibility criteria are straightforward. You need a bachelor’s degree with minimum marks, a valid CAT 2025 score, and no age limit applies. Work experience is not mandatory for the full-time programmes.

Academic Qualification

  • A Bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years duration in any discipline from a recognized university is required.
  • Minimum 50% aggregate marks in graduation for General, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and EWS candidates.
  • Minimum 45% aggregate marks in graduation for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
  • Students in their final year of graduation can apply; they must submit proof of completing the degree requirement before the joining date.

Entrance Exam Requirement

You must have a valid CAT 2025 score for the 2026-28 batch. IIFT does not accept GMAT, XAT, or any other exam score for Indian resident applicants. Foreign nationals and NRI candidates who have resided outside India for over 18 continuous months must submit a valid GMAT score taken after January 1, 2025.

Age Limit and Work Experience

  • There is no upper age limit for IIFT MBA admission.
  • Work experience is not mandatory. However, it adds up to 5 bonus points at both the shortlisting stage and the final selection stage — giving experienced candidates an advantage at the scoring margin.
  • Work experience scoring: 0 months = 0 points; 1-11 months = 1 point; 12-23 months = 2 points; 24-35 months = 4 points; 36+ months = 5 points.
Category Minimum Graduation Marks Qualifying Exam
General / OBC / EWS 50% CAT 2025
SC / ST / PwD 45% CAT 2025
Foreign Nationals / NRI (18+ months abroad) Equivalent qualification GMAT (after January 1, 2025)
MBA (IB) Working Professionals 50% General / 45% SC/ST/PwD Separate IIFT process (no CAT needed)

Indian citizens who appeared for any Indian MBA entrance exam (CAT, XAT, etc.) in the same cycle are not eligible under the foreign national/NRI category, even if they hold NRI status.

IIFT 2026 Application Process

The IIFT 2026 application window for the 2026-28 batch was open from 17 October 2025 to 12 December 2025. The steps below reflect the completed 2026-28 cycle and will follow a very similar pattern for the 2027-29 cycle, expected to open in October 2026.

How to Apply for IIFT MBA

  1. Visit iift.ac.in and click on ’Apply for IIFT MBA’.
  2. Select ’Fresh Candidate to Create Login’ and enter your name, email, and mobile number. Note the application number carefully.
  3. Log in and fill in all personal, academic, work experience, and contact details. Indicate your campus preferences (first, second, third choice).
  4. Upload a recent passport-size photograph, scanned signature, graduation marksheets, and any category or work experience certificates in the prescribed format.
  5. Pay the application fee online via debit card, credit card, or net banking.
  6. Download and save the confirmation page for your records.
  7. After shortlist announcement, fill the separate CV and WAT-PI form within the deadline. This form collects detailed work experience, essay responses, and interview city preferences.

IIFT application fees are non-refundable. Make sure your CAT 2025 registration is complete before applying — IIFT links your application to your CAT roll number for score verification. Mismatched details may lead to rejection.

IIFT 2026 Application Fee

Category MBA IB Application Fee MBA BA Application Fee
General / OBC / EWS INR 3,000 INR 2,000
SC / ST / PwD INR 1,500 INR 1,000
Foreign Nationals / NRI USD 200 USD 200

IIFT 2026 Selection Process: Stage 1 and Stage 2

IIFT follows a two-stage selection process. Stage 1 shortlists candidates for the GD-PI round using CAT scores and profile. Stage 2 is the WAT, GD, and PI round, which determines the final merit list. Notably, the CAT score carries 90 points at shortlisting but only 55 points at final selection — which means your GD-PI performance directly and significantly affects your admission outcome.

Stage 1: CAT Score Shortlisting

IIFT uses a 100-point composite score to shortlist candidates for the GD-PI round:

Parameter Weightage (out of 100)
CAT 2025 Normalized Score 90 points
Work Experience 5 points
Gender Diversity 5 points
Total 100 points

Gender diversity: 5 points for non-male candidates; 0 for male candidates. This gives female candidates a meaningful advantage at the shortlisting margin and is part of IIFT’s effort to improve gender diversity in the batch.

Stage 2: Final Merit List After WAT, GD and PI

Shortlisted candidates attend WAT, GD, and PI rounds. The final merit list uses a fresh 100-point composite score:

Parameter Weightage (out of 100)
CAT 2025 Normalized Score 55 points
Personal Interview (PI) 20 points
Group Discussion (GD) 10 points
Work Experience 5 points
Academic Consistency (Class 10, 12, Graduation) 5 points
Gender Diversity 5 points
Total 100 points

The GD and PI together carry 30 points in the final merit list — more than half of what the CAT score contributes at this stage. A strong interview round can convert a 97-percentile score into an IIFT Delhi admit, while a weak interview can cost a 99-percentiler their seat.

IIFT 2026 Cutoff: CAT Percentile and Composite Score

The IIFT 2026 cutoff has two components: the minimum sectional CAT percentile that every applicant must clear, and the effective overall percentile actually needed to receive a GD-PI call from each campus. Meeting the sectional minimum is just the entry gate — the real competition is at the overall percentile level.

IIFT 2026 Official Minimum Sectional CAT Cutoffs

You must score at least this percentile in each of the three CAT sections — VARC, DILR, and QA. Failing even one section eliminates your application regardless of your overall score.

Category Minimum Percentile in Each CAT Section
General 65 percentile
EWS / NC-OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 55 percentile
SC / ST / PwD / Kashmiri Migrants 30 percentile

Effective Overall CAT Percentile by Campus (IIFT 2026)

The actual overall percentile needed for a GD-PI call is much higher than the sectional minimum, especially at Delhi. The estimates below are based on IIFT 2026 shortlist trends and previous cycle data:

Campus General EWS / NC-OBC SC / ST
IIFT Delhi 98+ percentile 90+ percentile 75+ percentile
IIFT Kolkata 97+ percentile 88+ percentile 72+ percentile
IIFT Kakinada 95+ percentile 85+ percentile 65+ percentile
IIFT GIFT City 94+ percentile 83+ percentile 62+ percentile

IIFT 2026 Composite Score Cutoff for GD-PI Call

The Stage 1 composite score (CAT 90 + Work Experience 5 + Gender Diversity 5 = 100) determines who gets shortlisted. Expected minimum composite scores for a GD-PI call, based on 2025 and 2024 trend data:

Category Expected Composite Score for Shortlisting
General 30-35 (out of 100)
EWS / NC-OBC Around 25
SC / ST / PwD 15-20

Year-Wise IIFT Cutoff Trend

IIFT switched from its own entrance exam to CAT scores starting from the 2024 admission cycle. Cutoffs from 2023 and earlier are in the IIFT exam scale and are not comparable to CAT percentiles.

Batch Year Qualifying Exam General Category Overall Cutoff
2026-28 CAT 2025 98+ percentile overall (Delhi)
2025-27 CAT 2024 98+ percentile overall (Delhi)
2024-26 CAT 2023 98+ percentile overall (Delhi)
2023-25 Own IIFT Exam ~40 percentile (own exam scale)

IIFT WAT, GD and Personal Interview

IIFT’s Stage 2 selection includes three components on the same day: Writing Skills Assessment (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI). For the 2026 cycle, these rounds were held in March 2026 at 9 cities: Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, and GIFT City.

Writing Skills Assessment (WAT)

The WAT tests your ability to express structured ideas on international business and current affairs in written form. IIFT values clarity, structure, depth of content, and balanced argumentation.

  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Word Limit: 250 to 300 words
  • Topic Type: International trade, global economics, current affairs, and business policy
  • Sample Past Topics: "US-China Trade War and India’s Opportunity," "India as a Global Manufacturing Hub," "Should India Re-join RCEP?"

Group Discussion (GD)

The GD round evaluates communication skills, global awareness, and the ability to listen, lead, and summarize. IIFT selects topics with an international business or geopolitical angle.

  • Duration: 15 to 20 minutes
  • Group Size: 10 to 12 candidates per group
  • Assessed On: Content quality, communication clarity, initiative, listening skills, and group behaviour

Personal Interview (PI)

The PI carries 20 out of 100 points in the final merit list — the second-largest component after the CAT score. It typically lasts 15 to 20 minutes. Panels ask about your academic background, work experience, global awareness, and career goals in international business.

  • Know India’s current export trends, active FTAs (India-UAE CEPA, India-Australia ECTA, India-UK FTA status), and WTO basics before entering the room.
  • Prepare a specific Why IIFT answer — connect it to IIFT’s international business identity, not a generic B-school response.
  • If you have work experience, link it to international trade themes: export clients, supply chain exposure, cross-border finance, or regulatory work.
  • Be ready to discuss your graduation subjects, especially if they relate to economics, commerce, finance, or engineering with trade applications.

IIFT 2026 Result and Waitlist Movement

The IIFT 2026 final result and merit list for the MBA IB and MBA BA 2026-28 batch was released in June 2026. Candidates can check their admission status by logging into the official IIFT portal. Waitlist movement is ongoing as of June 30, 2026.

How to Check IIFT 2026 Result

  1. Go to iift.ac.in/iift/new-admissions.php.
  2. Log in with your application ID and password.
  3. Check your admission status — first offer, waitlist rank, or no offer.
  4. Download your admission offer letter or waitlist position letter.

How the IIFT Waitlist Works

Seats open when confirmed candidates withdraw. IIFT processes waitlist movement in rounds. The sequence of campus preference — from lowest to highest desirability — typically runs: GIFT City, then Kakinada, then Kolkata, then Delhi. When a candidate at a higher-preference campus declines, the seat stays within the same category and rank queue.

  • Each reservation category (General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, PwD, Kashmiri Migrants) has its own separate waitlist. A vacancy in General does not trigger movement in SC.
  • To remain in the waitlist pool, candidates must have paid the waitlist retention fee of INR 20,000. This amount is fully refundable if no seat is offered. It is forfeited if a seat is offered and the candidate declines or does not respond in time.
  • Seat conversion offers typically come with a 24 to 48 hour response window. Missing the deadline results in automatic loss of the offer.
  • In the 2025 cycle, IIFT ran three rounds of waitlist movement before admissions were finalized.

Waitlisted candidates must check iift.ac.in daily and respond immediately if an offer arrives. A delayed response, even by a few hours after the deadline, results in the seat moving to the next candidate on the list.

After Accepting an Offer

Once you receive and accept an offer, pay the first fee instalment within the deadline in the offer letter. IIFT then sends joining instructions covering the campus reporting date, hostel allotment process, and document verification schedule. The 2026-28 batch is expected to begin classes in July 2026 across all campuses.

IIFT Campuses and Seat Intake 2026

IIFT has four campuses for the 2026-28 batch. The MBA IB programme is available at all four campuses. The MBA BA programme is offered only at Delhi with 60 seats.

Campus-wise Seat Intake: MBA IB and MBA BA (2026-28)

Campus Location MBA IB Seats MBA BA Seats Total Seats
IIFT Delhi New Delhi 240 60 300
IIFT Kolkata West Bengal 240 240
IIFT Kakinada Andhra Pradesh 120 120
IIFT GIFT City Gujarat 120 120
Total 720 60 780

Seats at all campuses are filled as per Government of India reservation norms: 27% for NC-OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 10% for EWS. PwD candidates receive a 5% horizontal reservation across all categories.

About the Four IIFT Campuses

  • IIFT Delhi: The original and most established campus, located in Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi. Offers both MBA IB and MBA BA. Has direct access to the capital’s corporate, government, and trade ministry ecosystem. Most preferred campus by students.
  • IIFT Kolkata: Located in Kolkata, West Bengal. Offers MBA IB. Well-regarded for its industry connections in eastern India and proximity to major port-linked trade businesses.
  • IIFT Kakinada: Located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Offers MBA IB and also the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) for students after 10+2. Newer campus but carries the same degree and brand.
  • IIFT GIFT City: Located in GIFT City, Gujarat. Offers MBA IB. GIFT City’s status as India’s first operational smart city and international financial services centre creates unique networking opportunities in trade finance and global business.

All campuses follow the same curriculum and placement process. The IIFT degree does not specify the campus name — all graduates receive the same qualification. Campus allotment is based on composite score rank and declared preference.

Preparation Tips for IIFT 2027-29

Since IIFT now uses CAT scores as the primary filter, your preparation must centre on achieving 99+ overall CAT percentile for Delhi. But IIFT gives significant weight to the GD-PI — 30 points out of 100 in the final selection. So your prep needs two tracks running in parallel: CAT excellence and international business awareness.

CAT Section-wise Strategy

  • VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension): Read editorials from business and international trade publications daily — this builds both reading speed for CAT and the global knowledge base you need for IIFT’s GD-PI topics. Practise RC passages with a timer: aim to answer a 600-word passage in 8 to 10 minutes. Use process of elimination on para-jumbles rather than relying on intuition.
  • DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning): Practise complete sets from the last five CAT papers. DILR has shifted toward complex, multi-variable interconnected sets. Focus on scheduling puzzles, seating arrangements, and data-heavy caselets. Aim for accuracy over speed — two complete sets at 95% accuracy beats three sets at 60%.
  • QA (Quantitative Ability): Start with NCERT Class 9 and 10 Maths to build clean fundamentals. High-priority topics: Number Systems, Algebra, Geometry, and Arithmetic (Percentages, Ratio, Profit and Loss). Supplement with a weekly mock test series. Aim for at least 50 full-length mocks with detailed post-test analysis.

Target CAT Score by Campus

  • For IIFT Delhi MBA IB: Target 99+ percentile overall, with no section below 90 percentile.
  • For IIFT Kolkata: 97 to 98+ percentile is competitive for General category.
  • For Kakinada or GIFT City: 94 to 96+ percentile is competitive for General category.
  • Work experience of 24 to 36 months adds up to 4 bonus points at shortlisting — at the 97-percentile boundary, this can determine whether you get a GD-PI call.

GD, WAT and PI Preparation

  • Keep a weekly trade news journal: track India’s monthly export-import data, active FTAs, and WTO developments. This directly feeds your WAT and PI responses at IIFT.
  • Practise writing: write one 250-word essay on a trade or policy topic every week within 20 minutes, without stopping to edit mid-way.
  • For your PI, prepare a specific Why IIFT answer tied to international business goals. A commerce graduate should connect to India’s trade balance or export sector growth; an engineer should link to manufacturing exports or trade logistics.
  • Read IIFT’s official prospectus for its research areas, industry tie-ups, and alumni achievements. These give you the building blocks for a credible and specific answer about why you chose IIFT over IIMs.

Timeline for IIFT 2027-29 Aspirants

  • July–August 2026: Register for CAT 2026. Build your study schedule covering VARC and QA fundamentals.
  • August–October 2026: Complete the full CAT syllabus. Start sectional mocks. Apply to IIFT once the window opens (expected October 2026).
  • October–November 2026: Intensify full-length CAT mocks. Maintain a trade news reading habit for GD-PI prep.
  • November 2026: Appear for CAT 2026.
  • February 2027: Fill the WAT-PI form after the shortlist is announced.
  • March 2027: Attend GD-PI rounds at your chosen city.

Ans. Work experience is not mandatory for the full-time IIFT MBA IB and MBA BA programmes. Fresh graduates can apply and convert. However, work experience adds up to 5 bonus points at both the shortlisting stage and the final selection stage — maximum benefit (5 points per stage) goes to candidates with 36 or more months of experience. For the MBA (IB) for Working Professionals programme, at least one year of work experience is mandatory.

Ques. What is the IIFT 2026 selection process?

Ans. IIFT uses a two-stage process. Stage 1 shortlists using: CAT score (90) + Work Experience (5) + Gender Diversity (5) = 100. Stage 2 prepares the final merit list using: CAT score (55) + Personal Interview (20) + Group Discussion (10) + Work Experience (5) + Academic Consistency (5) + Gender Diversity (5) = 100. The GD and PI together carry 30 points in Stage 2, making the interview round highly consequential.

Ques. What is the last date to apply for IIFT Working Professionals MBA 2026?

Ans. The last date to apply for the IIFT MBA (IB) for Working Professionals 2026-29 batch is 1 July 2026. This deadline was extended from the earlier closing date after a revision announced on 25 June 2026. The registration fee is INR 2,500 (non-refundable) and the total programme fee is INR 10.50 Lakhs. Candidates need at least one year of work experience and do not need a CAT score. Apply on the official IIFT portal before midnight on 1 July 2026.

Ques. Which IIFT campus is best for MBA?

Ans. All four IIFT campuses follow the same curriculum, faculty standards, and placement process. The IIFT degree does not specify the campus name. Delhi is most preferred for its location advantage — proximity to government, trade ministries, and Delhi’s corporate network. Kolkata is well-regarded for eastern India industry connections. Kakinada and GIFT City are newer but carry the same IIFT brand and placement record. Campus allotment depends on your composite score rank and stated preference.

Ques. Is GMAT accepted for IIFT MBA 2026?

Ans. GMAT is accepted only for foreign nationals and NRI candidates who have resided outside India for at least 18 continuous months. The GMAT score must have been taken after January 1, 2025. Indian resident candidates must use CAT 2025 scores. Candidates who appeared for any Indian MBA entrance exam in the same cycle — including CAT or XAT — are not eligible under the foreign national category, even if they hold NRI status.

Ques. What is the IIFT average placement package?

Ans. The IIFT MBA IB average placement package in the 2025 cycle was INR 31.3 LPA. The median was INR 26 LPA. The highest domestic package was INR 72 LPA and the highest international package was INR 1.23 crore per annum. More than 160 companies participated with a 100% placement rate for both MBA IB and MBA BA batches.

Ques. When will IIFT MBA 2027-29 applications open?

Ans. Based on the previous cycle, IIFT MBA 2027-29 applications are expected to open in October 2026. The 2026-28 batch registration opened on 17 October 2025. Candidates must register for CAT 2026 (notification expected August 2026) and appear in November 2026 before applying to IIFT. Monitor iift.ac.in from October 2026 for the official announcement.

Ques. Is IIFT MBA better than IIM for international business careers?

Ans. IIFT and IIMs serve different goals. IIMs offer a general management MBA across multiple specialisations. IIFT is specifically built for international business — it is the best choice if your career goal is export management, trade policy, global business strategy, trade finance, or cross-border operations. IIFT placement packages are comparable to newer IIMs, and the institute’s Ministry of Commerce link gives graduates a unique edge for trade-policy and export-sector roles. If international business is your specific focus, IIFT prepares you more sharply than a general MBA.
