What is CBSE?
CBSE stands for the Central Board of Secondary Education. It is a national-level education board that works under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The board conducts two main exams every year, the Secondary School Examination (Class 10) and the Senior School Certificate Examination (Class 12).
CBSE is one of the largest school boards in the world. More than 24 lakh students appeared in the Class 10 board exam in 2026, and around 20 lakh students appeared in the Class 12 exam. The board follows the NCERT curriculum and is known for its standard pattern across all affiliated schools.
The CBSE 2026 session has brought a major reform. From 2026, Class 10 board exams are held twice a year. This makes 2026 one of the most important years in the history of the board. The Class 12 exam pattern stays the same for now, with one main exam each year.

CBSE Class 10 Board Exam Twice a Year from 2026
The biggest CBSE 2026 reform is the two-exam-a-year system for Class 10. This change is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The aim is to reduce exam stress and give students a fair second chance in the same academic year.
Under this system, every Class 10 student must appear for the first board exam in February. Students who want to improve their marks can then take the second board exam, also called Phase 2, in May. The board keeps the better score of the two exams for each subject. So the second exam can only help you, it cannot pull your marks down.
You can improve your score in up to three subjects in the Phase 2 exam. Internal assessment is held only once, before the first exam. This year, more than 6.68 lakh students appeared in the Class 10 Phase 2 exam held from 15 May to 1 June 2026. Out of these, 5,25,655 students appeared for improvement, 85,285 for compartment, and 57,914 for both.
The Class 10 second board exam is optional. The first February exam is compulsory for all regular students.
Key Features of the Two-Exam System
- First Exam: Held in February. Compulsory for all regular Class 10 students.
- Second Exam (Phase 2): Held in May. Optional, for improvement and compartment candidates.
- Best of Two: CBSE records the higher score of the two exams in each subject.
- Up to Three Subjects: You can attempt to improve marks in a maximum of three subjects.
- Special Groups: Special provisions exist for sportspersons, students of winter-bound schools, and children with special needs.
The Class 12 exam is not part of this two-exam system yet. For now, Class 12 has one main exam, followed by a supplementary exam in July for those who need it.

CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026
The CBSE Class 12 Supplementary Exam 2026 is the second chance for students who could not clear one or two subjects in the main exam. It is also called the compartment exam. The board has announced that this exam will be held on 15 July 2026 in a single day.
The most important update right now is the LOC submission. The online List of Candidates (LOC) submission window opens today, 2 June 2026. Schools must submit the details of eligible candidates through the official CBSE portal. Private and regular candidates have to complete the process in online mode only.
No changes, including addition or deletion of names or subjects, will be allowed after the LOC is submitted. No application will be accepted after the last date.
Who Can Apply for the Supplementary Exam?
- Compartment Candidates 2026: Students placed in the compartment category in the 2026 Class 12 result can appear.
- Improvement Candidates: Students who passed Class 12 in 2026 but want to improve their performance in one subject can apply.
- 2025 Compartment Candidates: Students from the 2025 batch who are still in the compartment category can also apply. For them, this is the third and final attempt.
CBSE allows a maximum of three attempts to clear a compartment. So if you are a compartment candidate, you should apply on time and use your attempt carefully. The supplementary result usually comes out within four to five weeks of the exam.

| Category | Pass Percentage |
|---|---|
| Overall | 85.20% |
| Girls | 88.86% |
| Boys | 82.13% |
| Top Region (Trivandrum) | 95.62% |

CBSE 2026 Exam Pattern
The CBSE 2026 exam pattern follows a balanced mix of competency-based questions, objective questions, and descriptive answers. The board has been increasing the share of competency-based questions in line with NEP 2020. This tests how well you can apply concepts, not just memorise them.
Each subject paper is generally for 80 marks, with 20 marks kept for internal assessment or practicals. The total comes to 100 marks per subject. The exam is held in offline mode only.
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Offline (pen and paper) |
| Theory Marks | 80 marks (most subjects) |
| Internal / Practical | 20 marks |
| Total per Subject | 100 marks |
| Competency-Based Questions | Around 50% in Class 10, 40% in Class 12 |
| Duration | 3 hours (most papers) |
| Passing Marks | 33% in each subject |
The question paper has multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, case-based questions, and long-answer questions. You should practise all these types during your preparation. Reading the question paper carefully in the first 15 minutes helps you plan your time well.
CBSE Grading System 2026
CBSE follows a 9-point grading system for both Class 10 and Class 12. Grades are given based on the position of a student in a group of passed candidates. This is called relative grading. The system helps reduce the pressure of small mark differences.
| Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A1 | Top 1/8th of passed candidates |
| A2 | Next 1/8th |
| B1 | Next 1/8th |
| B2 | Next 1/8th |
| C1 | Next 1/8th |
| C2 | Next 1/8th |
| D1 | Next 1/8th |
| D2 | Next 1/8th |
| E | Needs improvement (essential repeat) |
The grades are shown along with marks on the marksheet. CBSE does not calculate or declare a division or aggregate percentage on the marksheet. So you should not divide your total by the number of subjects unless a college clearly asks for it.
CBSE 2026 Syllabus
The CBSE 2026 syllabus is based on the NCERT books. The board revises the syllabus every year and publishes it on the academic section of the official website. You should always follow the latest syllabus to avoid studying topics that have been removed.
For Class 10, the main subjects are Mathematics (Standard and Basic), Science, Social Science, English, Hindi, and other language and skill subjects. For Class 12, the syllabus depends on your stream, which can be Science, Commerce, or Humanities.
- Science Stream: Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics, English, and one optional subject.
- Commerce Stream: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, and one optional subject.
- Humanities Stream: History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, English, and other electives.
The syllabus also lists the chapter-wise weightage and the type of questions. You should use this weightage to plan which chapters need more attention. Competency-based learning is given more importance this year, so focus on understanding concepts deeply.
CBSE 2026 Eligibility Criteria
The CBSE 2026 eligibility rules are simple and based on your school records and attendance. Most students appear as regular candidates through their schools. Private candidates also have separate rules under which they can apply.
- Class 10: You must have completed Class 9 from a CBSE-affiliated school and have the required attendance.
- Class 12: You must have passed Class 11 and be enrolled in a CBSE-affiliated school for Class 12.
- Attendance: A minimum of 75% attendance is generally required to appear in the board exam.
- Private Candidates: Students who cannot attend a regular school can apply as private candidates if they meet the board’s conditions.
There is no age limit for regular candidates as long as they are promoted through the normal school system. For the supplementary and compartment exams, eligibility depends on your result status, as explained in the supplementary exam section above.
CBSE 2026 Registration and LOC Fees
CBSE registration is done through schools using the LOC (List of Candidates) system. Schools upload the details of all students who will appear in the board exam. This is true for the main exam as well as the supplementary exam. The LOC for the Class 12 supplementary exam opens today, 2 June 2026.
The exam fee depends on the number of subjects and the candidate's category. Schools collect the fee and pay it to the board during the LOC process. You should check the exact fee with your school, as it is revised from time to time.
| Process | Details |
|---|---|
| Registration Mode | Online, through the school (LOC system) |
| Supplementary LOC Start | 2 June 2026 |
| Fee Payment | Through the school during LOC submission |
| Late Fee | Applies after the normal window closes |
You should submit your details to your school well before the last date. Once the LOC is locked, no new name or subject can be added. So do not wait for the final day.
CBSE 2026 Verification and Revaluation of Marks
If you are not happy with your CBSE 2026 marks, you can apply for verification and revaluation. The board opened this window on 1 June 2026 for Class 12 candidates. The process has three steps, and you must follow the order given by the board.
- Verification of Marks: The board rechecks the total and confirms that all answers were marked. The fee is INR 100 per subject.
- Photocopy of Answer Book: After verification, you can ask for a scanned copy of your evaluated answer sheet.
- Re-evaluation: You can then request re-evaluation of specific answers. The fee is INR 25 per question.
You must follow the steps in order. You cannot apply for re-evaluation without first completing verification and getting the answer book copy.
The revised marks, if any, are final. Your marks can go up, stay the same, or, in rare cases, go down after re-evaluation. So you should apply only if you have a strong reason to believe there is a marking error.
CBSE Compartment and Improvement Rules 2026
The CBSE compartment and improvement rules give students a second chance without losing a full year. In 2026, Class 10 students get this chance through the Phase 2 exam, while Class 12 students get it through the July supplementary exam.
A compartment is given when you fail in one or two subjects. You can clear the failed subject in the supplementary or second exam. Improvement means you passed but want a better score in a subject.
- Compartment Limit: A maximum of three attempts is allowed to clear a compartment subject.
- Class 10 Improvement: You can improve up to three subjects in the Phase 2 exam, with best-of-two scoring.
- Class 12 Improvement: You can improve in one subject through the supplementary exam held on 15 July 2026.
- Same Year Benefit: Clearing the compartment in the same year means you do not lose an academic session.
This system helps students who have had a bad day on one paper. So if you have a compartment, you should not panic. You should apply on time through your school and prepare well for the supplementary exam.
CBSE 2026 Preparation Tips
Good CBSE 2026 preparation is about steady work, not last-minute cramming. The board exams test both your understanding and your time management. Here are some simple tips that help students score well.
| Preparation Strategy | Core Focus and Action Plan | Why does it matter? |
| 1. Follow the latest syllabus | Study strictly according to the topics and rationalised content prescribed in the official CBSE 2026 syllabus. | Prevents wasting precious time on deleted or non-evaluative topics. |
| 2. Focus on Competency Questions | Dedicate significant practice time to application-based, case-study, and assertion-reason questions. | These question types now constitute a major portion of the board paper to test deep conceptual understanding. |
| 3. Solve Sample Papers | Practise the official CBSE 2026 sample papers and at least the last 5 years' previous question papers under timed conditions. | Familiarises you with the exact exam pattern and marking scheme, and helps build writing speed. |
| 4. Make Short Notes | Condense chapters into crisp, one-page summaries, formulas, and key definitions. | Acts as an invaluable resource for rapid, stress-free review during the high-pressure days right before the exam. |
| 5. Revise Regularly | Schedule your timeline to ensure every subject is thoroughly revised at least twice before the final exam day. | Strengthens long-term memory retention and ensures you don't forget foundational concepts. |
