B Tech Mining Engineering Subjects

BTech Mining Engineering Syllabus subjects equip the students with a tendency to constantly look for innovative methods of mining that mitigate the resultant damage by the mining process. The important subjects in B Tech Mining Engineering are:

  • Development of Mineral Deposits - This will impart the knowledge of mineral deposits and make the student learn and understand the ordinary methods of drilling, blasting and special methods of shaft sinking. Also to make the student understand the detonators and drivage of drifts.

  • Mine Surveying - This imparts the knowledge of measurements of distances and angles, determination of different levels and level differences and computation of areas, and volumes which includes determination of the capacity of reservoirs, and volumes of barrow pits. The knowledge of modern instruments like Theodolite surveying and tachometric surveying, designing & setup of curves and global positioning systems. 
  • Underground Coal Mining Technology-: Students will understand coal growth in India and all over the world and different terminology used in coal mining including modern methods. the student will have new innovative thoughts through computer applications.

Ans. The scope of Mining is very limited and can be accessed only if you are truly interested in Mining and are serious about pursuing a career in the same. I suggest you pursue higher education in Mining from an elite foreign university like Colorado School of Mines, Royal School of Mines, and University of New South Wales. This will nurture your technical skills to the best. Another suggestion in this regard is that you can also go for ISM. The enthusiasm for Mining at ISM is like nowhere else. However, if you are after a good package rather than pursuing your enthusiasm, then IIT KGP is a better option. IIT KGP has an abundance of opportunities for the students academic environment is second to none. It offers extensive exposure and is thus most preferred by Engineering students of all branches.  As far as recruiters are concerned, a large number of them offer jobs to students at IIT KGP mainly because of the credibility of the Institute irrespective of the branch. Also, very few companies offer core jobs in Mining. Therefore, most mining students end up with non-core jobs. Ques. How is Mining Engineering at NIT Raipur? What can I expect my starting package to be (roughly)?

Ans. NIT Raipur Mining Engineering is one of the best in the country. However, the prospects are very challenging so you will have to work hard to excel in this field. If you are confused about any branch, go through its strengths and weaknesses. For instance, a mining engineer gets paid handsomely but his working conditions are very challenging and may even affect his health.  Generally, the placement scenario of branches like CSE, IT, and mining is very good. Last year 62 offers were made to 70 eligible students. I asked my friend for the detailed statistics and here is what he shared  The maximum salary package offered was 55 LPA. The minimum salary package offered ranges between 15 LPA - 25 LPA.  Around 85% of students got placed in various tech and non-tech companies.  Top recruiting companies are Vedantu, Adani, JSW, and Tata Steel.  About 40% of students got internships in non-core companies. Overall, the mining engineering branch is a good choice if you are genuinely interested in the field.Read more

Ques. Should I join IIT Kharagpur mining engineering just for IIT Tag?

Ans. Joining a certain branch that you are not even interested in just for the IIT tag is not the most logical decision. One usually decides on a certain branch for 3 reasons; either to get a good package or to pursue your area of interest or to follow the majority. However, in the case of Mining Engineering, this is not the case at all. You won’t be available to avail either of these benefits because of its low demand. In fact you will end up with the following circumstances You will have to work extremely hard in the first year in order to get a branch change In case you are unable to get a branch change, you will start running after POR, join different clubs to work on your non Engineering abilities. During placements you will be more inclined towards Non-Core placements because of your aversion to Mining. Still, if you are adamant about getting into IIT, then join only if  You want to work in analytics, consult or analyst after 4 years instead of Engineering  If you want to pursue MBA from an IIM If you want to switch your field after graduation. The reason why I am suggesting you give up Engineering is that with Mining, you can literally pursue anything other than Engineering. So it’s better you make up your mind for the same or apply to other institutes.Read more

Ques. Is it worth joining mining in NIT Raipur, which I got in 3rd round, in terms of placement?

Ans. Given your rank of 2900, it would be very difficult to get CSE in these colleges. So you need a lot of luck during the Spot Counseling. If anyone withdraws their admission at the last moment from the CSE branch of these colleges then you might get admission.  There are chances of getting a seat in MSIT or BVCoE, but it is very difficult in MAIT. Here are the recent cutoff trends of both MAIT and BVCoE MAIT Cutoff 2022 Round JEE Main IPU-CET Round 1 19671 22910 Round 2 26701 - Round 3 28594 BVCoE Cutoff 2022 Round  JEE Main IPU CET Round 1 33640 36573 Round 2 41775 41775 Round 3 42573 42573 Although the chances of getting CSE are low, you might get EEE with this rank. Ans. First of all you need to lose this ideology that mechanical has more scope and mining has less scope. Every field has top notch research going in it and provides dynamic and challenging work opportunities.  I also had the same dilemma and I chose Mining at IIT Kharagpur over other departments for to following reasons:- IIT Kharagpur is famous for its Mining branch which is one of the core branches in b.tech. IIT Kharagpur is ranked 6th in the NIRF ranking while IIT Patna is Ranked 41th . IIT Kharagpur has a Median Salary of 16 LPA while IIT Patna is at 12 LPA . IIT Kharagpur is one of the oldest institutes in India established in 1951. Coal India also comes for recruitment at IIT Kharagpur and international companies like Rio Tinto come for recruitment process.Read more

Ans. Mining Engineering at IIT-BHU is quite good. The Mining Branch in IIT-BHU came into existence in 1923 as a section of the Department of Geology. Later in 1944 separate Department of Mining Engineering was formed. It is one of the oldest and biggest Mining Engineering branch of India. The course structure of mining is a combination of mechanical, electrical, electronics, earth sciences, computer science, and physics. The department has 6 well-equipped laboratories. The faculty is qualified and well-experienced in their field. A lot of companies visit the campus placement drive every year such as Coal India Limited, Tata Steel, Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc, Jindal, etc. The Placement stats show that in 2019 the Highest package for the mining branch at IIT-BHU was 31 LPA and the average package was 12 LPA. Apart from the core recruiting companies, there are also placement options in non-core companies that visit the campus. Almost 95% of students from the Mining batch get placed every year. Ans. Mining Machinery is an interdisciplinary branch which combines the curriculums of Mining and Mechanical.  Mining companies which require a mechanical engineer, seek candidates from this branch. Irrespective of B.Tech or M.Tech, if you have a good knowledge of your branch, you’ll get placed in a core company. The curriculum is quite interesting too. Mining and Hydraulics are very interesting topics because of their practical nature. The course burden is comparatively low, so you can simultaneously prepare for a competitive exam.  Most students get placed in core companies like JSW, KCCL, Terex, Technip FMC, Normet, Thriveni Earthmovers, Dott Services and SMS Limited. The placements hugely rely on your class placement representative. He/she has to make efforts to bring in companies. Ans. There is no clear winner in this comparison. If you are interested in Mining Engineering and want to learn fundamental and core technicalities, then NIT Surathkal will be better. As an institute, NITK is better than other engineering colleges in Karnataka. It offers better academics, exposure, facilities, and campus life. For Mining, NIT Surtahkal placements are great. Coal India visits NITK for recruiting students. The average CTC received by the students of this bench is INR 5-6 LPA. But if you aren’t particularly interested in Mining Engineering, then you should choose CSE at PES University. In the current industry landscape, CSE offers better placements with cushy salary packages. Read more

Under his presence, the branch has flourished in a better way. Considering few other factors like faculty, facilities, placements, etc. will help you in analyzing how is the mining branch at BIT Sindri. Faculty: Initially, BIT Sindri lacked experienced faculties but the recruitment of new faculties with M.Tech and Ph.D. degrees from IITs and NITs has improved the teaching scenario of the college.  Labs and Infrastructure: The college is equipped with well-structured labs that will help you in the advancement of your curriculum. The mining building is well equipped with better technical facilities.  Training Opportunities: The college focuses on the overall career development of their students and that is why they organize surface and metal mining vocational training at various PSUs and private organizations.  Placements: The college has a pretty decent placement record. Ans. NIT Raipur started with the Mining, Metallurgy, and Mechanical branches. These branches are highly regarded in the institute. An acquaintance of mine who is an NIT Raipur alumnus advises against dropping out. Even after dropping out a year, some students sadly do not live up to the expectations they had set for themselves. The best option in NIT Raipur is arguably mining. Some of the students of NIT Raipur prepared for the JEE to appear for a second time and they were able to score big.  I do agree with my friend that it will be better if you pursue your studies along with the preparation for JEE Main. This way you will have a sense of security and a contingency plan if things don’t turn out as planned.Read more
