Course Structure

B.Tech. Electronics and Media Technology is structured with 8 semesters of 6 months each in which a student is supposed to study various technical subjects as well as theory ones. For first hand industrial experience a student has to go for industrial training of 2 or more weeks in final year of the course.

Scheme of Assessment

A student is assessed with experiments, mini projects, thesis submission, industrial training, internal assessments and written exams during the term. There are different credits for every subject that is to be covered in the 8 semesters of 4 year duration.

Here students learn to use C language in programming.

Video Production

Introduction to TV technology, Principle of Video Camera, Components and Controls of Video Camera, Balancing of colors of a video camera, Video camera lenses, Types of audio & video connectors.

Concepts of video production are covered through this course.

Radio Production

What is Sound?, Exploitation of Sound, Use of voice and natural sounds, Writing for Radio, Production of programmes, News and Current Affairs, Radio Journalism.

Secrets of sound and its frequencies are discovered through this course.

Media Laws And Ethics

Overview of the Indian constitution, freedom of the press and restrictions these upon, Centre-state relations, PRB Act 1867, Civil and Criminal Laws, Broadcasting Bill, Autonomy and Prasar Bharati Act, Code and Ethics.

It is always necessary to follow laws and ethics and that is what this course is about.

Video Codes And Standards

Video Formation, Perception, Representation, Fourier analysis of Video Signal, 2D/3D Motion Estimation, Video Compression standards and its Algorithms, Scalable Coding, Error resilient Encoding.

A student must know about the codes and standards of video programming which he/she learns through this course.

Advanced Photography

Additive colors, psychological significance of colors, Direction of lights, Artificial Lights, Key Light or Main light, Techniques on Image making, Digital imaging.

Through this course one learns about various techniques of photography.

Ques. I got NIT Surathkal ECE and IIIT Bangalore CSE. I am joining IIIT Bangalore CSE, is it a good decision?

Ans. This is a very subjective question. However, as a student of ECE at NIT Surathkal, I am writing down a few points in defense of my degree- First of all, NIT Surathkal offers a much more complete and diversified engineering education. This is because you will get to interact with the students of various disciplines from around the institution. This will offer a good exposure in contrast to the IIITs which are entirely focused on CSE and ECE branches. ECE is the branch of the future. CSE is turning more and more into a commodity. This is due to the dilution of its educational standards, and the increasing volume of students in this branch.  As an ECE student, you can always learn programming (it is in fact a part of the curriculum in a limited manner). However, it is much more difficult to learn the concepts of ECE as a CSE student.  As an ECE student you can be placed in a software company, but as a CSE student you can’t work in the E&C field.  Both the colleges are good, but NITK holds more prestige because it is much older. Its campus is very impressive as well. But even IIIT Bangalore CSE is a great option. Once you’ve made a decision, stop seeking others’ opinions. Instead, work on your skill enhancement. Considering the sheer lack of core jobs in the electronics sector in India and the huge placement opportunities in the IT sector, your choice is good from a placement point of view. Read more

Ques. How is ABES EC as an engineering college and what are its downfalls?

Ans. Overall ABES EC is an average engineering college at best. Here are some of the pros and cons of joining the institutes.  Pros:  It has great infrastructural facilities. There is centralized AC for all blocks in the whole college. The lush green campus will soothe your eyes. The hostel accommodation is well furnished and maintained regularly.  There are many food courts that sell good quality food at reasonable prices. The campus has a big stadium that conducts different cricket matches. Some of the faculty members are cooperative and student-friendly.  The ABES EC placement scenario is decent. The average CTC offered to students is around INR 6 LPA. There are many clubs like Samvaad Theatre Group, Technovation, etc. in which you can take part.  Cons:  ABES EC has a strict 75% attendance rule. Failing to maintain this can lead to detention.  The institute calls parents if they don’t attend your class.  The hostel curfew timing for girls is strict. You need to be inside the hostel premises at 6 pm during winter and 6:30 pm during summer.  The video will take you on a tour across the ABES Capus Overall, your time at ABES EC will be a bittersweet one. Read more

Ques. How are the ECE placements at Thapar University?

Ans. In general, there are very limited core placement opportunities in ECE because of the limited scope in this field especially in India. ECE placements at Thapar University are no different. As a whole, ECE placements here are decent because mostly consultancies and management visits for recruitment. The only issue is that core jobs are very less. But on the bright side, students of Thapar University can sit for placements in all branches thereby opening more gates of opportunities for them. This makes up for the lack of core jobs.  I asked a friend about the placements scenario of ECE and she shared a few pieces of information Around 60-65% of students get placed in the ECE department. The highest salary package offered is 30 LPA,  The lowest salary package is 4 LPA,  The average salary package is 6 LPA to 7 LPA.  Top Recruiters are Amazon, WDC Gameskraft, McKinsey, JP Morgan, etc.  Around 75% of students get internship offers in roles such as SDE, member of technical staff, and quant. Ans. The ECE program at IIIT Hyderabad is more focused on IT than Electronics because IIIT Hyderabad itself is an IT institute. Other colleges have a lot of non-IT courses in the first year  of their ECE program whereas IIIT Hyderabad ECE has no such courses in the firsts year  ECE stands for many things in different places. ECE in IIIT is Electronics and communication engineering. However, unlike Electronics in other institutes. IIIT Hyderabad ECE program does not include courses such as electrical machines, electric drives, power systems, power electronics, and related labs and workshops.  The students of both ECE and CSE at IIIT Hyderabad are taught common courses sin the first year after which students can take CS courses as electives. Some of these include Statistical Methods in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Artificial Neural and Networks (ANN).   IIIT Hyderabad does not have official CS and ECE departments enabling students from any stream to join any research center irrespective of the program they are enrolled in.  IIIT Hyderabad ECE placements are great Placement % 100% Highest CTC  INR 46 LPA Average CTC  INR 29 LPA Lowest CTC INR 13 LPA Overall, ECE at IIIT Hyderabad is certainly a great choice!Read more

Ans. NIT Trichy is always considered superior to its counterparts and rightly so. The institute has a record of excellent placements, a competitive environment, and a highly learned faculty pool. NIT Calicut is well-known for its exceptionally good CSE department.  So, I think the decision of choosing between  NIT Trichy ECE and NIT Calicut depends more on personal preferences than the institute. However you would like to consider the following points before making the final decision, ECE is a bit more challenging than CSE in terms of the curriculum and the opportunities offered. However, hard work and assistance from faculty can help you. CSE on the other hand is an evergreen branch that has a record of providing hefty packages and great opportunities in general. NIT Trichy has a difficult campus life owing to its extremely hot climate and remote location. NIT Silchar has a pleasant climate with a beautiful lush green campus.  If you look at the overall picture, both colleges have excellent departments and offer similar opportunities, so the major determining criteria should be your branch preference. Ques. What is the average package of ECE at IIT Roorkee?

Ans. Being one of the oldest and top IITs, IIT Roorkee boasts an excellent placement scenario with many top companies visiting the campus. This year too, the entire batch got placed in their 4th year. Some students even got 2-3 job offers. Many seniors were given PPOs while doing their internships. Nutanix offered job roles to many students. The highest international salary package stood at 1.3 CPA whereas the highest domestic salary package offered was 60 LPA. The lowest salary package offered ranged between 8 LPA - 9 LPA.  A number of big firms made it to the placements like  Microsoft Google Nutanix Adobe DE Shaw JP Morgan Goldman Sachs The most common role offered was that of an SDE. Ans. The ECE branch at DTU is very competent. It has a pool of talented, intelligent, and hardworking students. The reason being that the cutoffs for ECE usually are high. DTU ECE students get placed every year in MNCs like Qualcomm, SanDisk, TI, Samsung, and other such reputed firms that hire electronics engineers. A good percentage of the students also pursue an MS from renowned universities across the globe. Students also prepare for competitive exams like CAT, GATE, UPSE CSE, and even succeed in them. The faculty here is very knowledgeable and teaches lucidly. They are also very lenient in their evaluation. The curriculum is entirely focused on hardware, communication, computer architecture, advanced integrated circuits, signals and systems, superior probability, networking, and control systems. This is just a broad classification, the actual curriculum is vast, and students can find a lot of interesting sub-fields in electronics. The only drawback of the curriculum is that it does not offer any CSE electives. Assignments are scarce and can be efficiently dealt with as the solutions are readily available from various sources. The workload is at the bare minimum level. The exams require just a couple of weeks of diligent studying. For the rest of the semester, one is free to explore his/her skills, hobbies, and interests. 75% and above GPA is straightforward to achieve and maintain. Pushing a bit more during the exam period can fetch even 80% and above. This all makes the college life here very exciting and rewarding. To sum up, ECE at DTU is a good option that can be exercised if one compares among the top NITs.Read more

Having completed my B.E. in ECE from BITS Hyderabad, I find myself eligible to answer your query.  The average package for B.E. in ECE is close to 20.5 LPA, and the median package is close to 18.6 LPA. The department has a good faculty. Some of the teachers don’t teach very well, but they are very supportive. The department offers all the necessary facilities and opportunities. ECE is the second most sought after branch at BITS. You can consider pursuing your B.E. ECE from BITS Hyderabad.Read more
